Sammie Bracken of Mr. Electric in Plainfield, Indiana, provides a few quick electrical safety tips to help homeowners when hanging holiday lights on the home's exterior:
1. Never use a small gauge cord that is intended for indoor use only.
2. Always use a proper outdoor outlet with foam gaskets to help keep out the rain and snow. If you don't have one, they are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and keep things water-tight.
3. Use an outdoor-use, heavy-duty cord. These are typically a larger cord and orange in color.
4. Plug in the cord, tuck the cord inside the outlet box and snap the lid shut. Remember water and electricity don't mix!
