Karen Russo, Niece of Gentog senior: “I moved up here, seven years ago, to take care of my aunt, who has Parkinson’s and dementia. Every time I came into Gentog, people were smiling. It always smelled perfect. It smelled like home cooking was going on. The kids were laughing and playing.”
Marcie Jones, Founder of Gentog: “We’re an intergenerational day care. We care for children under the age of 5 and senior adults, most of whom have Dementia. The children and the seniors each have their own space, and they have their own day plan. The children have a full day of preschool activities. They spend their day playing and doing arts and crafts and singing and hearing stories, and they enjoy it thoroughly. On the senior side, we have a special room that they, too, can do activities throughout the day, and we have games going on. We have reading. We have music. We have exercise. We have brain games to keep their brains active, and then, of course, we have the intergenerational time.”
Karen Russo: “If she were just home, she would sit on the couch all day long, but with this, she’s active. They’re having her doing things. They’re watching TV or they’re playing card games, or they’re reading or they’re making cards or making hats. The came home with a turkey for Thanksgiving, just like you would a kid. She’s doing really really well here.”
Marcie Jones: “It especially touches my heart when we do an intergenerational activity, and the kids take the ball that they help pass along to the grandparents, and one of children – they choose which one to take it to – and they take it to the most disabled person in the wheelchair. That always touches my heart. They’re not afraid of that. They’re not afraid of wrinkles or what looks different, and I think that we are helping to raise some kids that are going to make a difference in the world.”
