Appliance Refinishing

Reasons to refinish appliances

Appliance refinishing can change the look of an individual item or a whole room by:

  • Unifying the look of your kitchen by refinishing all appliances with the same color.
  • Personalize your decor, or bring it up to date.
  • Allowing you to keep using a well-worn but reliable appliance that shows considerable wear.

Appliance refinishing methods

There are a variety of techniques for refinishing appliances and other surfaces:

1. Electrostatic painting

Electrostatic painting is the most thorough, and involved, process. It involves using a particle paint spray that is positively charged and is attracted to the negatively charged metal appliance surface. This process requires specialized equipment.

When considering other kinds of paint, avoid using latex-based paints, as they aren't heat-resistant and can bubble up and tear. For an even and smooth finish, paint should be sprayed on, as brushing can leave swirl marks.

2. Liquid stainless steel

Liquid stainless steel can give appliances a shiny new metal coating; however, be prepared for a strong odor until it dries.

3. Porcelain enamel

Porcelain enameling gives a chip-proof and heat-resistant coating to stoves, ranges and oven doors.

4. Buffing (DIY)

YOu can refinish some stainless steel appliances by simply buffing away scratch marks with vegetable oil and an abrasive pad. Alternatively, there are over-the-counter and relatively inexpensive scratch-removal products that work well on stainless steel.

Hiring an appliance refinishing company

Be aware that while many appliance and surface refinishing jobs can be completed in a day, highly rated appliacen experts may be booked some time in advance.

Care tips after appliance refinishing

After an appliance or surface has been refinished, be careful to avoid scratching and other damage:

  • Allow enough time for complete drying or curing before use.
  • Avoid rubbing hard, sharp objects against the new surface.
