Home Warranties Toppled from Angie’s List Most Complained-about Categories

INDIANAPOLIS, February 12, 2015 -- After 10 consecutive years with the highest percentage of poor grades among Angie’s List categories, home warranty companies have lost that dubious distinction.

“We’re really pleased to see home warranties drop because it means consumers are getting better service,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks.

Angie’s List (Nasdaq: ANGI) is a national local services marketplace and consumer review site. Its members rate companies based on five categories of service: price, professionalism, punctuality, quality and responsiveness.

Slightly more than 20 percent of the Angie’s List member reviews on home warranty companies in 2014 were either a D or F grade overall on the A-to-F grading scale, putting the category at No. 3 on the ranking of worst to best grades.

Topping the 2014 worst grade earners by percentage were furniture retailers, with 28.5 percent D and F grades.

“Hopefully we’ll see companies take lessons from their customers’ reviews and turn these grades around. Clearly, it can be done,” Hicks said.

2014 worst Angie’s List grade earners by percentage were:

  • Furniture retailers
  • Property management
  • Home warranty companies
  • Auto sales
  • Internet service
  • Propane sales/service
  • Auction services
  • Boats
  • Cable TV service
  • Home builders

On the other end of the scale, categories earning the best grades by percentage were:

  • Piano tuning
  • Paper shredding
  • Fitness studios
  • General cardiologists
  • Orthopedics services focused on hip care
  • Oriental rug cleaning
  • Radon detection and remediation experts
  • Physical therapists
  • Dog walking
  • House and pet sitters

Rankings are based on Angie’s List analysis of member reports submitted during 2014. Proprietary technology and human review are used to ensure grades on Angie’s List are reliable and fair. Anonymous comments and self-reporting are prohibited, and companies are encouraged to monitor and respond to reports free-of-charge.
