Munoz Construction LLC
Jose Munoz walked through the entire job site with my husband and me about a month prior to the arrival of his crew.  He took very good notes and made some excellent suggestions.  He  provided us a list of materials that we could acquire ourselves ahead of time - which we did.  Mr. Munoz and his crew arrived promptly and setup quickly.  They took very good care of my home by using shoe covers, laying down tarps, and taping up plastic to reduce the drywall dust.  The work took place over a day and a half - as projected.  Everything was completed with care and looks excellent!  I would definitely use this company again and would highly recommend them!

Herndon Service
The demolition and installation took place while I was out of town.  Before I left, Luisinspected all agreed supplies I purchased: floor tile, wall tile, thin set, grout, sealer, medicine cabinet, lavatory, sink, vanity light, GFI switch/plug-outlet combo, reused newer toilet, glass towel rods/mounts, recessed soap dish, plumbing fixtures, shower rod, curtain, as well as paint.  These items totaled about $2000, as I chose 3x6 inch gray mosaic marble subway tile for walls and 1 inch white/gray/beige hex mosaic marble for the floor. The work took place for the most-part while I was away at a family reunion in California.  We had telephone calls and SMS text pics of the process during that 10 days.  The entire job was complete in two weeks, which took a bit longer than expected, but allowed me to be home for the last couple of days to advise on finishing touches. The work was NOT EASY, I could see that from the demolition effort, which took longer due to the 1950s style construction (bomb shelter) of my bathroom.  All the tile was set in concrete, the floor and the walls.  Both needed significant effort to remove and clean up to allow for the laying of plywood to floor studs, followed by Hardyboard (concrete board) over new plywood floor and directly to the wall studs.   This made the scheule slip a day or two.   After the demo, the job went swimmingly and looks simply beautiful.  I have to say the transformation was astounding.  They are consumate professionals.  HIRE THEM.

Picture Perfect Home Improvements LLC
I had water seepage into my basement family room.  I noticed a musty smell and some black dusty stuff on the back wall near the door.  After calling Picture Perfect, they gave me an estimate to completely replace the double wood doors, re-drywall the back walls, remove the carpet and put in a laminate wood floor, paint the entire basement, replace the toilet and sink in the lavatory, frame and finish a separate room to hide my washer and dryer.  They installed new ventilation fans for both lav and laundry rooms.  They then graded the area around the entry and suggested that I remove the large bushes and trees near the house to allow more drainage and lower the grade more.  Adam, the on-site supervisor, really explained what I needed and was very thorough.  He made some good suggestions for the flooring and fixtures and the job was completed very fast and with minimal intrusion and fuss.  I am keeping Adam's business card and have already recommended Picture Perfect to my neighbor.  They were fast, courteous and trustworthy.

Lakewood Home Builders Inc
We hired Lakewood to help update and renovate a home in the country for us. The project had a wide ranging list of tasks to accomplish from repairing a metal roof, rewiring the entire house electrical wiring, lighting and ceiling fans, outdoor lighting, generator, cellar doors, new AC, etc. Everything was completed in a timely manner and to our expectations. The project manager at Lakewood, Tim Johnson, was responsive and flexible with our schedule and needs. Lakewood clearly communicated the scope of work and cost, and maintained a high level of communication during the entire process. They are professional and easy to work with. TI would highly recommend Lakewood to anyone!

Maxtor did a great job on my screened in porch. Miguel and his team helped me with the design, electrical work and the finishing touches, including very professional casing. He added an enclosed cellar under the porch that I use for storage. The whole job took less than a month and Miguel was attentive to my many requests. His work is of a high quality and very economical.

Overall, the project was a tremendous success.  The only negative was the length of time it took to get the necessary permits, especially for the wine cellar excavation and buildout. The work quality was superior. The construction workers, electricians,  plumbers, and carpenters were courteous, punctual, friendly, and extremely professional.  The finished basement is absolutely outstanding and should be used as an advertising example of a true success story .

Michael Nash Design Build & Homes
1 Aug 2011: The managers and employees at Michael Nash have done a great job to make sure our basement remodel goes smoothly.  Our wine cellar and new bar are taking shape--everything looks amazing right now.  Now that our cabinets and granite are installed, it's obvious the designer knew what would fit our space.  We decided this week that we wanted to extend the new flooring into the adjacent space in the basement, and Michael Nash made it easy to incorporate that change into the plan.  Dec 2011:  Our basement re-model is complete and we couldn't be more pleased with the finished product!  The total project (walk-in wine cellar, new bar w/ granite counter tops, new flooring (hardwood and tile), and our "pub-style" game room) are all beautiful.  It is exactly what we wanted.  There were a few hiccups along the way like you would expect with any remodel project, but the managers at Michael Nash walked us through each step and helped the project recover.  First, our pendant lights were discontinued by the manufacturer--they called and we were able to select another model, which I actually liked much better.  Then, they had problems with the supplier of our hardwood flooring--again, they helped us select another option, and it looks perfect! Michael Nash promptly responded to our questions and sent out workcrews to fix some minor  imperfections in some of the finishes.  Overall, we love our new basement and look forward to spending a lot of time in it with friends and family!

BasementRemodeling.com
Before the review, a short preamble. We have lived in our house for 21 years. It is a somewhat small 1950’s brick rambler with 3 bedrooms and 1 ¾ baths on the main level and had a fully unfinished basement having the same square footage as the main level below. We chose this house over several others, specifically because we intended to finish the basement “right away”, and even had a plan drawn up before we moved in. But finishing the basement never happened. Through two decades the plan went through many iterations. Many contractors took a look and gave us estimates. We de-scoped the plan, re-scoped the plan, had contractors lined up who pulled out, and in the interim focused on more straightforward home improvements. The unfinished basement loomed; to say there was a lot of emotional baggage tied up in the basement renovation would be an understatement. We came across Basement Masters (BM) via a web search for “finished basement MD”, that brought us to their online gallery. Our hopes were lifted as this seemed like the kind of company we had been looking for! We contacted Pavel, who came out and carefully and patiently walked us through their process with our plans and provided us our first estimate. We needed to take care of a few important issues first, starting with replacing original copper water pipes with PVC pipes (this was done to our satisfaction by one of BM’s subcontracting plumbers before the basement job actually started). Also looming was a ceiling clearance issue in the existing stairway, which required a variance from the county. Finally, there were two major water incursion issues that required coordination with a basement water mitigation specialist that Pavel recommended. We received a Christmas present from our county when they finally granted the variance in December 2015.  Over a year had passed between our first meeting with Pavel and the notification from the county. When we met with Pavel again, he informed us that their prices had gone up, but he offered a discount if we could start within ~ 10 days of the meeting; an opening in their construction schedule had just come up. This was daunting, as we needed to get everything out of the basement in very short order. During the negotiations we added a bar to the plan; with the discount this was a very attractive option and ultimately become part of the final plan. The deal was sealed when Pavel graciously offered to have his crew move large and heavy items into our rented storage pod on the start day.  When the team arrived they immediately got down to business and very carefully filled the pod with our belongings. They started framing that day. The basement was fully framed within about 4 days; the transformation was unbelievable. Water remediation of two areas in the basement, which was absolutely essential, was done in parallel, shortly after the framing was started. The water contractor recommended by Pavel did an excellent job. As the job progressed from framing, to plumbing, insulation, and drywall, we were impressed with BM’s attention to maintaining clear lines of communication and commitment to staying on schedule (the schedule was clearly articulated and fully considered and checked each week, very similar to scheduling protocols used in large-scale engineering projects). We also appreciated their attention to job-site tidiness; after each work day, they swept and removed the trash from the basement. The electrical subcontractor was superb and extremely pleasant to work with. He and his team took the time to clearly explain options for lighting, fixture placement, and data and home theater outlets, and were very responsive to our input and questions. The carpet installers were very competent and did a fine job. Finally, the finish painter was extremely meticulous and easy to work with; we are very pleased with his fine craftsmanship.  There were only a few things we would have liked to have seen done differently.  A large basement closet that contained stored clothing and other household items was left open (without protective plastic) for some period of time during the construction process and a large amount of construction dust made its way in. BM agreed to help clean this up and also compensated us for our time and effort.   As we found out during the initial plumbing inspection, the bathroom vent solution (PVC pipe with stack) that was originally selected by BM turned out to be unnecessary. The venting was removed in favor of a Studor valve solution, but this left a hole in the exterior brick wall. BM did fill the hole and installed a cover over the hole on the exterior wall. Finally, while BM’s decor advisor was pleasant and easy to work with, and helped us through the process of making decisions, we could have benefited from a little more help in narrowing down choices for such a large space; many of the choices were time critical and at times we felt rushed. All things considered, however, these issues did not seriously detract from our overall positive experience. Basement Masters did a superb job, finished on time, and resolved all of our issues. Our finished basement is simply awesome thanks to Basement Masters, and we could not be happier with the result. We enjoy the transformed space every day.

SNR Design and Build LLC
Very good, we love the results. Stan Riffle, the contractor, is very easy to work with, and best of all he is a perfectionist. Every thing done to our house was inspected daily by Stan.  His employees are courteous and know what they are doing. Never had an issue. When we purchased the house last year there were numerous thing we wanted done to make it our own. Stan started by painting  our main level and upper level areas.  He started shortly before Thanksgiving and promised us he'd be done before the holiday.  He was true to his word and the paint job was perfect. Next we had Stan finish our partially finished basement. He took down walls, to open up the room, put up dry walls, painted, and put up lighting. He built a large cedar closet and roughed in a 450 sq foot wine cellar for me. I also had him put in a wet bar with sink, dishwasher, wine cabinet and kegorator. He also roughed in a serving bar for me which I finished. We are very happy with the results. We also had Stan remove the paver patio that came with the house and replace it with a stone patio with stone walls and insert for a barbecue and we had him replace the decking on the deck with Trex Transends and insert a under deck drainage system so the area under the deck could be used in bad weather. Again the results are great. During the course of the work we found very few and I mean very few things that were not done correctly and he was prompt is correcting them.

POTOMAC VALLEY BUILDERS
Overall I think they need more than one foreman when supervising such a big job. The overall quality is okay, but without the architectural help, the design part may not have been as good. When their workers were doing the work, they should have been more closely supervised, the sub contractors should have been questioned, and better supervised also, and ask to offer the best quality product. The electricians should have been supervised to properly mark the wires in the electical box. The gutters installation should have been questioned when there were such big gaps between the soffits and the gutter itself. The insulation in the wine cellar should never have been installed the wrong way around, and those are only a few of the issues I had.

My Builder Inc / Bath-ReNu LLC
They are the ones I have decided to go with. They are starting the work on Thursday. The contract that I have signed is for approximately $43000.00. It will be more than that by the time they get through. They offer a video of what your project is going to look like when it is finished. It's not a deal breaker, but it is helpful. They gave me a list of references and I called the references and everybody said they would hire them again. They were also very well rated on Angie's List. I read all the comments people had made and that made them sound like a good company to hire. My Builder Inc also told me that the insulation that another builder had suggested was not the right kind of insulation for the cellar. They told me that I could put a closet in the room and not call it a bedroom and Fairfax County would not give me a problem, and Fairfax County agreed. I just felt that My Builder Inc knew their business better.

ROTH'S HANDYMAN SERVICE
As usual, Lawrence was on time, professional, did great work, and cleaned up everything before he left. This was a pretty typical visit for Lawrence, as we call him when we get several  small jobs that need doing so he can do a lot on one visit. Trust me, Lawrence does fantastic work and his prices are always fair. We have used him for more than 15 years and we trust his judgment on everything (except for his jokes, which are just lame). But Lawrence has done lots of jobs for us over the years, from the typical things such as installing ceiling fans and deadbolt locks, tiling a backsplash in our kitchen, doing recessed lighting in our kitchen, etc. But he has done some really big jobs for us too, such as installing a new oak staircase in our entry hall, building built-in bookshelves in our basement, and building a 6' by 8' wine cellar in our basement with full insulation and cooling unit. Lawrence can do it all. He is the best handyman in Prince William Co.

Dave was personally involved in every detail in the planning and design of each room. In addition, he came to the house virtually every day to be sure that the work was up to his high standards. His experience became obvious to me early on through the many thoughtful suggestions he made for the built-in cabinetry in the library. There are many, many choices available. I think that solid advice from someone like Dave is essential, if such a project is going to be really successful without a lot of stress. I like the fact that Dave offered suggestions and alternatives to us, but was always careful to step back and have us select what we felt was right for our needs and taste. I was very surprised at how clean Dave's workmen keep the house. I assumed that there would be dust everywhere from the sawing and drywall work. Instead, the house was remarkably dust free and Dave's people picked up after themselves every day, so construction clutter was non-existent. All of his workers were very polite and very professional. I cannot fault in any way the quality of the work that they did. All of the library base cabinets and shelves were installed with perfect alignment and I could not find even a small scratch on any surface. The same is true in the wine cellar. There was considerable drywall repair and repainting required in the library and kitchen areas. The work was done so well that I cannot identify the areas that were repaired, although I know where the holes were originally. The overall quality of the work and the final results certainly exceeded our expectations.

Basement Masters did a fantastic job for us. They started by walking through the basement with us and analyzing how it could be reconfigured to maximize use of the space. Then Pavel went through their very detailed price list to give us a precise estimate of the cost of the job, noting pricing that was variable based on our final selection of options. The detailed price list and plan for completing the various phases of the job gave us confidence that they knew what they were doing. The crews then marched through the job. Demolition followed by framing followed by electrical and plumbing followed by drywall, etc., etc. It was all planned out and executed very professionally. We had several questions and changes as the job proceeded and Basement Masters was very helpful and willing to make adjustments after clear discussion of price and our prior approval. The final product is beautiful and very functional. Elena, the interior designer, helped us make selections for paint colors and flooring that gave us a warm and inviting space. The trades teams were incredible - knowledgeable, neat and efficient. Most impressive was the demonstrated commitment to excellent work. Great Job!
