ARTS Environmental Services
I just bought a house built in 1943 and during the process of ripping out the drop ceiling suddenly thought, "Oh crap, is there asbestos in these ceiling tiles?" I emailed RTS on Sunday and they called me on Monday to set up an asbestos inspection. Paul came out on Thursday and inspected my house. He was very thorough in his explanation of the probabilities of asbestos contamination and its safe removal. He explained all of the areas of the house that could contain asbestos and explained their proper removal. As this is my first house I was really nervous to find out that their might be asbestos in it but Paul really put me at ease. Before he left he gave me a list of things that I could do to mitigate the risk of having potentially asbestos containing materials in my home. Totally worth the cost of the inspection.

Mr. Ramsey was very professional. Like most people, I knew very little about asbestos, he took his time to explain things.

We used Geller Environmental Labs for a residential asbestos inspection and associated sampling in D.C. in 2019. They were very prompt, professional, and very knowledgeable, and I would highly recommend them.

RTS offered to do asbestos abatement at my home. I checked with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to check on the licensing status of this company. MDE informed me that their license (to remove/encapsulate asbestos) had expired years ago.  Let this review serve as a reminder and warning to anyone seeking asbestos removal in their home in the State of Maryland. CALL MDE's Division of Asbestos Licensing and Enforcement (410-537-3200) and ask about the licensing status of the asbestos contractor. Also, ask for the number of violations cited against the contractor in the last ten years. The MDE will give you this critical information. You can get specific details on the nature of any violations through the FOIA. MDE will tell you how to request this information as well. You do not want unlicensed asbestos abatement companies in your home. (I do hope that Angie's list will allow this phone number to be included in my review. If not, google MDE Division of Asbestos Licensing and Enforcement. The phone number is listed on the website) You must call MDE. Current licensing information and number of violations are not listed on MDE's website. Also, be aware that asbestos inspectors (aka IH Firms) are NOT LICENSED in the State of Maryland. We found this out the hard way after our home was contaminated with asbestos and the Maryland firm did not detect the asbestos. We had to hire a company in Virginia to find out that our home was indeed contaminated with friable asbestos (See my review on Geller Environmental). RTS may be fine for mold removal or asbestos inspection, but be aware that they are not licensed to remove asbestos (as of June 2011 when I called MDE). I believe they are licensed inspectors in the state of Virginia. Check  with the Virginia Asbestos Licensing board to be sure. Asbestos is dangerous. Do your homework!

AGeller Environmental Labs Inc
They were on time and did the testing in a timely manner. They also did my initial asbestos testing to see if I had asbestos in the house. That was a separate cost.

Responded promptly and explained the entire process by the phone and in a helpful site visit. The workers arrived on time and were entirely professional.

AGeller Environmental Labs Inc
While renovating Kitchen, a contractor provided the name of Geller Environmental Labs for asbestos testing. They were located locally and if I were to drop off the sample with check, they could get the results in a day or two. Before droping the samples we called and asked questions about asbestos and the they were very helpful in providing us information regarding asbestos. After two days, we did receive the report through email and while the tiles tested positive for asbestos, we were very happy with our experience with Geller.

AGeller Environmental Labs Inc
I can't say enough about how well they worked with us and the situation we were in. They were extremely professional, efficient, and punctual. Due to some asbestos contamination due to waterproofing, we needed to have our basement completely cleaned of asbestos particles by an asbestos abatement company. Geller Labs was very thorough in making sure that the abatement company did a thorough job (they had to redo their work a few times) and put our interests first.  Their pricing is a bit high, but its worth every penny in the assurance that your home is contaminant free. If you want peice of mind regarding asbestos, this is the company to turn to.

We had damaged asbestos tile in our basement, discovered when we tore up the carpet to do a basement renovation. We called Young at the advice of the person who tested the tile. Young was quick to schedule and handled the removal beautifully. Very pleased.

AHazmat Engineering Consultants, LLC
Removed asbestos tiles in lower lever of our home before we could have new floors installed.  The crew who actually did the work was very punctual.  They were actually at my home before the appointment and waited until time so as not to disturb me. They moved furniture where needed and protected with plastic anything that could not be moved.  They totally sealed off other areas of the house to avoid hazardous dust being spread.  They were efficient and cleaned up very well after the process. I have to thank Mr. Robert Gibson, Sr. Project Manager for  Hazmat Engineering Consultants for a job well done!  I would definitely recommend him for anyone unfortunate enough to need this service.

We were able to do the work ourselves, as advised by RTS. However, talking to them was the best experience we have had yet with any contractor! It's truly wonderful to talk to someone honest and not trying to use scare tactics to scam you out of as much money as they can. Sadly, it's a true rarity. I actually wish we had a reason to hire them!

AGeller Environmental Labs Inc
Our experience with Geller Env. Labs was very professional and pleasant. The team member who came to take samples of our floor was professional and friendly. The asbestos report arrived via email very quickly.. within 24 hours of the test. Once the asbestos was abated by a different company, Geller Env. Labs came out to perform an air quality test. Again, the team member was extremely professional and friendly. That report was also sent to us the very next day (within 24 hours). Thank you!

ABoston Environmental & Contracting, Inc
Boston Consulting was always prompt, responsive, and professional throughout our entire interaction. We obtained 3 bids for the work we needed performed, and while they weren't the cheapest of the 3 prices we received, we felt that they offered a better value and a higher level of quality and professionalism than the others. We would definitely hire them again, no question.

ACAMPBELL GIBBONS
The job went very well. The crew did an excellent job removing asbestos floor tiles and the remaining mastic. The work was done on time and all the people at Campbell Gibbons were a pleasure to work with, especially Bob and Dom. I would not hesitate to use Campbell Gibbons again.

ABoston Environmental & Contracting, Inc
I had a wonderful experience with Boston Environment & Contracting. They came out on a Saturday to give me a quote and to get samples for testing. The quote was very reasonable and included everything from the removal to the air testing to take place after the removal. I got the quote on Saturday, got the asbestos tests back that Tuesday, and they came to the house to remove it all on Wednesday. By Friday they had gotten the air quality tests back and were able to remove all the safety plastic. This entire job took less than a week. I was in constant contact with them - they called to update me often and were always available if I called with a question. I recommend them HIGHLY.

They were prompt; they were dressed appropriately. they set up a barrier, and they executed the asbestos removal in a timely manner. They arranged for another company to come and take reading to make sure that no asbestos particles lingered.

AGeller Environmental Labs Inc
Gellar Environmental Labs provided the hard information and analysis my family needed to move forward after a series of stressful issues befell our home and lives in south Arlington - but perhaps more importantly, the people there delivered it with care, patience and a real human touch. The extra time Jack spent over the phone from the time I first called until the testing was completed made a real difference in putting our fears in perspective and ultimately, allaying them. Jack's employees similarly took the extra time necessary to answer all questions with detail and kindness. As stressful as the overall experience was for us (which started with water leaking into our basement after a contractor error and eventually lead to air sampling tests for mold and asbestos), it ended with our basement - and our peace of mind - restored, thanks in large part to Geller Environmental.

AYoung Environmental Services
Young Environmental was very professional and patient with my questions concerning asbestos. They referred me to a lab to take samples from my home. My conversation with the company was a learning experience. Thankfully the results came back negative however if I did need removal I would have no reservations working with this company. Many of my realtor colleagues have used this company and have been pleased with the work.

Clean as a whistle.  Professionally completed.  Also had the result "air monitored" to ensure quality completion.  Passed all tests.  Additional charge ($350) by and independent lab

Peter and crew were right on time. They were efficient, doing a great job of covering and sealing everything. They were able to remove all of the tiles in my basement (440 sq ft) and seal over the remaining adhesive. They also worked with a company for air quality testing, completing the entire job in under 6 hours.

Recent Review: John came to give us an estimate and we were a little shocked by the price. This is by no means a cheap service because of the regulations they have to follow. He called us later and lowered his price to keep his crew working and we were very happy for someone that really wanted our business. They were very prompt on the day of the removal. They did everything we asked and left the house in better shape than when they arrived. They even removed some old carpet that was in the way. We were very satisfied with the job they did. The one thing that we were surprised by was the fact they did not take credit cards. We had not budgeted for a cash payment. I hope in the future they are more up front with customers about this. We would use them again.

If you find asbestos in your home, it could pose serious dangers to your health.

Scientists noted its negative health effects as early as 1899 and studies throughout the first 50 years of the last century proved it was dangerous. Even if you're relatively handy around the house, you should leave asbestos removal to the professionals.

Here are some basic tips on how to hire for asbestos removal contractors.

1. Learn the Local Laws

While asbestos detection and removal isn't regulated by any federal agencies, state and local governments provide guidelines that asbestos removal companies need to follow to become licensed. Depending on where you live, certain permits may also be required, and the only way to make sure that your removal company is on the level is to be knowledgeable about the local laws.

2. Make Sure They Follow EPA and OSHA Standards

Even if you aren't touching it, asbestos could still be dangerous to your health. To make sure that asbestos is cleared from a house properly, asbestos removal companies will need to follow the removal procedures laid down by the EPA and OSHA. When you check their methods, make sure that the company is insured as well. If they aren't, your homeowners insurance policy could be held liable for worker injuries that occur during the removal process.

3. Get Reference Contacts

A good asbestos removal company will be happy to hand over referral contacts. You could get in touch with former customers and ask about the removal techniques that were used in their homes. But this is more of a test of the contractor: are they willing to divulge former customers to testify to their abilities? Also be sure to check out local reviews online.

While modern asbestos has been used since the 1850s (and on a industrial scale since the 1870s) its use by humans date back 4,500 years.
