    Ground Up Renovations LLC
    Terrible. Ryan Todd signed the contract, and was paid over $6000.00, and tore off our existing breezeway. He had lumber and concrete bags delivered. After that he did nothing except lie, lie and lie. The lumber has set in the weather for 9 months and the bags of concrete sat in the weather uncovered. All of it ruined. He did not even remove the debris from tearing down the breezeway. He would never call, I had to contact him repeatedly to ask when he was coming to complete the job. He would always say in a couple of weeks, or the city is being difficult about the permit. None of that was true. He used our money to pay for materials for other jobs that he had overextended himself on. He essentially stole my money. The last time I contacted him he said that he was out of business. That is also a lie. He was arrested for disorderly conduct in Randolph County at about that same time. It is a matter of public record. A complaint has been filed with the NC Attorney Generals office, which he has failed to respond to. I hope they will proceed with criminal charges. A civil suit is also in the works. Do not get ripped off by this con artist!

    George seemed interested in helping us at first - told us he would need to see pictures of the house, etc. I took photos and sent them to him, and he responded telling me that it didn't look like it could be done but he was going to talk to his brick mason (nevermind even addressing the other project). I explained that we had had several other estimates, and the other contractors told us that it could be done, if that helped. He then took an additional two days to get back to me (he was never prompt in responding), and told me that "he was sure it can be done, but since I had already gotten other estimates, I should just go with one of those. His schedule was booked 6 months out" (that was his email to me, verbatim). First of all, he seemed interested in helping me until he heard we had gotten other estimates, and secondly, he could have told me up front how booked he was before he wasted my time. This isn't an urgent project, so I could have waited. If it's not doable, then tell me and that is fine. We had other contractors tell us that they were sorry but right now they couldn't help us for whatever reason (too booked, not enough man power, etc.). This is my home - don't get upset because I mentioned that I had already gotten a couple of other estimates. Anyone who wants work done on their home can, and should, get as many estimates from as many companies as they choose - multiple opinions are never a bad thing. I told him that this was extremely unprofessional and that I hoped in the future he would be better about communicating with potential clients. After this experience, I wouldn't work with him if he was the only contractor in the area!

    Incredibly well Shane displayed skill and a touch of genius. We had communicated by phone and text message. Shane explained that there are no exterior doors available that are in 23 inch size. If I could find a door manufacturer who would accept a special order that could take months and cost a small fortune. Most likely companies who manufacture doors would not accept a special order for a size they don't make. Shane showed up for the job with all the materials he needed to repair the door.     First contact door-to-door couple day before 1/5/17 Sad that our insurance would pay for a new roof because of wind damage. Had us get in contact with them to access the damage and start a claim. When we got the claim estimate back on 1/5/17. Lauren the MARS representative came back to give us their quote based on what our insurance company would pay. Even talk us into an upgrading the shingles that they were going to help pay for using the money the insurance company was going to give us for the water damage to the bath room ceiling. Also insisted on a payment that night. After talking with the insurance company and each other we decided to cancel the upgrade to the shingle we just did not feel right about it. Due to our schedule and Lauren breaking her arm we were no able to meet for the new contract until 2/10/17 at which time we gave them the last of what was needed for a deposit on the materials to get started. Monday 2/13/17: My wife texted me a little before 12noon that they have started. At 1pm I get a call saying my wife does not understand what Lauren is saying Lauren is going to call me and she does. She proceeds to explain that there is some soft spots and significant warping. They are going to have to sheet sections of the roof because of this. I say that sound like the whole roof I would like an estimate for that. She tells me that it is not the whole roof they are going to only replace some spots were it is bad and with out ripping off the rest of the roof they can not give me an estimate. I said ok, as long as we are not talking the whole roof. I come home around 5pm and the whole front section had been sheeted over and none of the old wood removed. The crew pack up for the night and did not clean up the entrances to the house. They left the back deck covered in a tarp with debris blocking the dogs from the back yard. They had also piled all of the materials around were they move our trash and recycle bins too in the yard. Tuesday 2/14/17: The crew arrives 8am and immediately started sheeting the entire next side of the roof that they had left completely exposed over night. 9:45am I call Lauren and say it looks like they are just going to sheet over the whole roof can I get a quote or estimate. I get the same line and yesterday about not being able to estimate it until they have it all the way open and we are committed now so they have to finish. I reiterate that I need an estimate and Lauren assures me that she will talk to her boss and see what he says. 3:45 I call back and get the same story and that she will call me as soon as she talks to her boss. 6:04pm I call again after getting the same story that they cannot estimate the additional costs because they have not torn the last side off. But at this point the crew has re sheeted three whole side of my house. At least the crew has temporarily dried the roof in and has told me they will not be back the next day because of rain. At this point Lauren finally admits that they have to sheet a whole side because if they only put down sheet on top of bad spot with out cutting the old wood out it would leave a bump. She again reiterated the they had to finish the job once they start it so the crew would be back tomorrow. At that point I yelled a little and told her she need to get on the same page with the crew as they told me they were not come due to rain. Lauren then told me that she thought she should have her boss call me directly. I told her I thought that was a good idea. 6:13pm Lauren called back say that they had to finish the roof once they started and that they would just not re sheet the last side. At this point I lost my composer and told her the job was stopped until I have a quote for the re sheeting and that no MARS employee were to be on my property until that happened. 6:22pm the boss Telli called once again telling me that I could not cancel the job at this point it would leave him liable. I told him that for the most part I was happy with the work that had been done but was very unhappy that I could not get an estimate of the additional cost of re sheeting the roof and that it was not some thing I feel I approved because there has been a disconnect between what has happen at my house and what Lauren was telling me. That three whole side had been sheeted over and not cut out the bad and replace were needed. I told him I really did not want to leave my house any more than he did. So I would meet with him the next day but I want some thing in writing before any more work happen on my house. 2/15/17:Telli calls at10:50am says he be to me in a hour. He shows up around 12:30pm and we talk I tell him I am not happy with the way things have been communicated with Lauren. That the scope of the work does not match what Lauren has been describing. I am also not happy because decisions that they made have now left an additional �� inch of exposed wood that. That a 25 year warranty on the shingles does nothing if the outer wood that now even more exposed rots away. He tells me that his installer charges him $20 a sheet and that he is trying to get him to come down on his price but he was going to just charge me cost so it would be $32 dollars a sheet and we are at 70 sheets bought so the additional cost would be $2240. Still not thing on paper from him but he promised to write it up and txt picture of to me. I do agree that if he gets me something in writing they can finish the job. 1:42pm I get a picture of the estimate not sure if that actually does me any good enough in a court of law. 1:48pm I walk in to the laundry room and get hit with a wall of stuffy hot air. I think the drier vent hose has come off some how but I am wrong. I discover in the roofing project that the exhaust chimney on the gas water heater is completely dislodged from the water heater and out of alignment by about 6���. I quickly open the back door and air the room out. Then I try to re seat the chimney but can I think the new boot on the roof is to tight so I can���t get it down. I text Telli a picture and ask him to have the crew take care of it the next day. He calls back immediately saying he not sure what I mean. I explain what I think has happened and that I just need it put back. He did not seem too concerned and told me to remind his foreman to take care of it. When my wife got home from what she was doing and I updated her she still we were not happy so we started researching online BBB, Attorney Generals Office, NC General contractor licensing, NC Insurance Commission. Even called and talked to a couple of real people. 3:28pm One of my clients text me she is part of the Home Builder Association so I call her and give her the skinny on my situation and ask if she has any body who can come and give me a second opinion and possibly a new bid. She hooks me up and I arrange to talk to someone in the morning. 3:55 I inform MARS that I am getting a second opinion and do not want the crew coming until I have gotten that and I will let them know ASAP if we move forward. 6:14pm I get a little freaked out about the chimney and call my dad to come help see if we can get it all the way seated. He comes up and I go up on the roof and discover that the chimney has a built in boot and now that they have sheeted over the roof it can���t come back down all the way and be reseated. We decided to use aluminum fold to cover the gap for now. And I pretty much decided I am getting a new roofer to do it right.

    * Excellent! Mr. Davis is a man of his word. We signed a contract, but the relationship was old school, similar to the days when a handshake sealed the deal. * The price was totally in line with what other contractors estimated. * He did more than we asked and was anxious to make us satisfied in every way. No haggling or complaining. No sneaky add-ons, even when we changed a couple of things. * His employees were all gentlemen/ladies of character. We never were nervous about leaving them alone at our home.

    Jaw dropping,amazing,fantastic,beautiful,skilled are just a few words that come to mind with the work John and his crew preformed. These guys/girls have exceeded every expectation I had plus some. From the moment we decided to give our 1978 brick rancher a face lift,we had a thousand questions,and as any consumer does these days they begin searching online(Angie's list) in my search I found John and his team of amazing craftsmen/tradesmen. They were able to answer every question in detail,details we could understand,nothing miss leading,helpful tips of ways for us to save money and tips on little projects we could do ourselfs. Within that this project became fun,not dreaded as I had imagined it would be(like we all do). We as home owners have alot of pride in the little things,those small details,John and his team do as well. They completed the work as if it was their home,not skipping a tiny detail one. No corners untouched. As our job grew from a few things to a list,John and his team kept right up. They were always on time,cleaned up behind them self's,even wiped their feet entering our home each time(even though the floors weren't installed yet). John and his team completed a wall removal,electrical work,carpet,bathroom update,installed new interior doors throughout,counter tops,custom cabinet, luxury vinyl flooring. All within a week!!! Now when I walk in my home my jaw drops at how amazing and beautiful my home is...Thank you John and your team!!!

    We moved into a 60 year old home and the kitchen was small and outdated, but was adjacent to a smallish and rarely used den, both of which opened into a family room addition. We knew from when we bought that we wanted to take out some walls and make a big kitchen that flowed directly into the addition, and along the way, we were going to steal a little space from the den to slightly enlarge the 6x6 pink tile master bath. 
    We got several estimates, and not only did Sherrill Davis quote us the same (or maybe less) to do both the kitchen and the bath than some others quoted us for the kitchen alone, he also took measurements and drew up a layout for the new kitchen on spec. We already had a general idea of what we wanted, but several of his ideas and adjustments were better than what we would have come up with on our own, and the other contractors weren't nearly as forthcoming with ideas. 
    Sherrill, Ian and their crew knocked out walls, opened up some pretty scary stuff in the walls (improperly installed headers, tricky wiring, weird plumbing decisions, etc.), and rolled with our tweaks and suggestions with ease. They didn't bristle when we wanted to get actively involved or when we changed our minds on the design. They worked with the fact that NOTHING in our house was square or flush before they started and made necessary adjustments to make sure that our new rooms feel like a seamless part of our house while also being far more useful and very attractive to boot. Our kitchen and bathroom are beautiful: worlds ahead of what we had, and we get compliments on both constantly. 
    In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that they are a somewhat small outfit, so the job did take a while. Longer than we had hoped, in fact. However, the savings, the attention to detail, and the level of care helped make up for the long timeline. For example, since we have small children, they were very conscious about ensuring that we had access to a stove and washer/dryer for as much of the project as possible. Even with full scale demolition in the kitchen, I think we were MAYBE without a stove for a day or two, total, and I don't know if we ever had trouble getting to our washer and dryer (which have to be accessed through the kitchen). They helped us turn our dining room into a makeshift kitchen, moving the refrigerator in and such. 
    The work wrapped last July, and even as recently as yesterday, they were willing to come out and make minor repairs to some cabinet drawers that had been giving us trouble.

    I am updating this review because after the work was finished I had problems.  

    1) they were to help hang a front door that had issues. That door fell off and I had to have another contractor come out until I could get it permanently fixed.

    2) They hung a new outside door in my back mud room.  A few months afterwards the door knob came off in my hand.  A contractor replaced it because it had odd screws.  Now, the bottom part just came off the door.

    I hired them because they received good ratings on Angie's list.  I caution anyone from using them because I have had doors and pieces and parts falling off my doors.  I am not one to want to give anyone a bad review but I trust someone to stand by their reputation and I have had someone else repair this work.

    Our issue with Davis Construction had absolutely nothing to do with the work. They never did any. And the work that his brother did was satisfactory. I would say the communication could have been better. It always took a day to return our calls.
    When the work that was done didn't repair the issue, we called Davis Construction back and asked what our options were to continue to search for the leak. Sherrill called back the next day and said he would set something up for his brother and other workers to return. We never heard from either again.
    I get it. A couple leaky windows is small potatoes for a construction company. So it made sense to go to someone cheaper, But the lax communication made it seem like our problem was nothing they cared to deal with. If they were the wrong fit for our problem, I wish they could have laid that out on the table. Otherwise Davis construction handled themselves in a professional manner.
    If we have a bigger job, I may consider calling them back based on the recommends from previous customers.
