    JC Smith LLC
We recently purchased a home built in 1896 and decided to hire JC Smith to do the extensive re-model. From the initial assessment to the final walk through, JC Smith was a top notch general contractor. The scope of work and cost estimate were both on point; no surprises or hidden costs that threw me out of my budget. The design consultant was very helpful with the new design and material choices; suggesting good quality yet affordable products that would help me achieve the design look I wanted while staying within my budget. The job foreman was knowledgeable about every aspect of the work that needed to be done and always polite and considerate to inform me of all the daily details during the construction phase. He addressed any questions or concerns I had promptly and courteously; even when I asked multiple times because I just didn't understand. ; ) Even the sub-contractors that were brought in did great work! If I wanted something "tweaked" at the end of a particular job, JC Smith was quick to have their sub-contractor return and finish the work to my satisfaction. Every worker that passed through the doors of my home were considerate of the fact that it was my home and therefore left an exceptionally clean job site at the end of the day. To make sure that all the work getting done was to their very high standards, there were multiple calls and visits from none other than the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I can't say enough good things about this general contractor! Thanks JC Smith for a job well done!!

Very responsive and cooperative. Steve himself came out to estimate job and troubleshoot possible mold issue, A member of his crew came out to fix tub leak and siding. Although I wasn't there to oversee the siding job, I believe the company overcharged for the fix as Steve estimated it was a 5 minute job and I was charged for 3/4 hr.
They agreed to come again when the weather was better to repair and paint a porch post, but despite several calls they never called back. Steve told me up front that they focused on large jobs, so I can't really fault them for not wanting to fix my post.

    B & G PAINTING CONTRACTORS
A renter trashed the inside of my town home. Called B&G and they were there within days, and brought a team in to paint every wall & ceiling in the home. They had the job done in only two days and made the inside look sellable/rentable again. Super nice and professional!!

We hired the company to remove an old ramp that the prior owner installed for a handicap relative and replace it with stairs with a small landing at that door.  We also hired them to do exterior painting, both of the front door and all door trim around the house.

The crew that came to look at the work needed and provide the estimate was amazing - on-time, professional, courteous.  We were very pleased and looked forward to working with the company.  We did not realize that none of them would be on-site for the work.  Unfortunately, not all of the men they sent were on-time, professional, and courteous.

To start with the good, the gentleman who removed the ramp and installed the stairs was terrific.  He was on-time every day and communicated as needed, but without being a bother at all.  Though we offered water to drink and the use of our restroom, he declined and went off-site for lunch and restroom breaks.  He was hard working, showed up on time, and worked full days until the work was complete.  The work was excellent.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the painter.  He showed up late on the first day and was unprepared.  He initially did not plan to do any preparation of the wood trim and was just going to start painting, without any scraping of the current paint (including where there was chips) or removal of items such as doorbells.  When he left to get additional materials for the prep work, we removed those items ourselves to try to reduce further delay in the work.  When he came back, his progress was very slow.  In addition, he left early.  As a result, by the end of the first day, little progress had been made.  He arrived mid-morning on the second day and, again, made little progress.  He was unable to remove the doorknob and peep hole on the front door, which we had to do ourselves.  He took frequent breaks, using the restroom multiple times each hour.  The paint job also was unsatisfactory.  He left mid-afternoon.  The next morning, we complained about some of the work and his hours when he arrived, at which point he became rude.  We called and asked the company to send a replacement painter, which they did.  It took a couple of days to finish the painting.  Unfortunately, some of the paint is already chipping, and it appears we will need to find someone else to repaint again soon.  We were very dissatisfied with this experience and the response of the company, which attributed this problem to personality differences when we asked for the replacement.

    T&D Painting Plus
During the estimate visit, Mr. Rouss said he could start the job right away.  His estimate was $2000.00.  He indicated he would need to purchase $290 of materials, and the labor costs would be $1710.  He presented himself well and was right on time for both the estimate and the follow-up "contract" visit.  He wanted $1000 (1/2) up front.  We were expecting out-of-town guests and really wanted the work done as soon as possible so we agreed.  The start date was then moved to two weeks hence.  This was still plenty of time to get things done before our company arrived and, since some of the materials we had ordered were in transit, we saw no problem with that.
We didn't hear anything more so we emailed T&D to make sure they would be at our home on April 15.  Yes, they would.  9:00 a.m.  At 10:00 a.m. that day, they had not showed.  I phoned.  I was told it looked like rain so they would come the next day. They did arrive around 10:30 a.m. the following day.  It was Terry and one other person.  They pressure-washed most of the back of the house and deck, as well as one side.  Were gone an hour for lunch.  Left for the day at 4:00 p.m.  Before leaving, Terry said he had a doctor's appointment the next day so they would not be there.
We heard nothing more for many days.  No response to emails.  We finally got an answer on the phone on a Saturday night. Mr. Rouss said he had a hernia and was not able to work for a bit.  We were preparing to take a two-week trip and all our materials were locked in the garage, inaccessible while we were away.  He said he would ready to get back on the job as soon as we got home.  We agreed upon Monday, May 20.  He said he and his "crew" would work all day each day that week and have everything on the list wrapped up by Friday, May 24, right ahead of our guests arriving.
While we were away, we emailed Terry several times asking how things were progressing and whether we were still on track to see them Monday, May 20.  Emails were not returned.  We finally said we were tired of the wait and hoped we would not have to contact an attorney.  We then heard back Sunday night and were assured that the workers would be there.  Now his story changed to sending his "swing shift" crew to our place at 3:30 p.m. Monday, and they would be there Tuesday and Wednesday at that same time (arriving 3:30 p.m.)  to do ALL our work.  If you saw the list above, you know---as did we---that no one could complete all those tasks in a few hours over the course of three days!!!  When we challenged him on that, he grew defensive and assured us that he and his crew were professionals and he guaranteed the work would be done.
Monday came and went with no sign of any workers.  We emailed and called.  No response.  Tuesday, at 4:10 p.m., two men showed up and said they were going to replace our front door hardware and hang the new lights.  We said the front of the house had not been pressure-washed yet; nor had the door and porch area been painted.  They tried to assure us that was NO problem.  No problem to pressure wash newly-hung lights at a later date!  And, our favorite, no problem to install expensive new door hardware on an unwashed, unpainted door because, "Terry can just cut around it when he paints."  We said that was unacceptable and the first step was to finish the pressure-washing.  We said they could go ahead and put the mailbox up since that didn't involve any preparation.  They left at 4:20 p.m. to "get a pressure-washer."  You will probably not be surprised to hear that they never came back.  We continued to try to contact T&D but never heard another word.
Now it is May 25th.  Seven weeks have passed since we gave Mr. Rouss a payment of $1000.00.  All we have to show for it is half of a pressure-washed house, and four sets of removed shutters (out of a total of eight pair).   We are retired seniors and this entire process has been so extremely stressful for us.  Not only have we been swindled out of a lot of money,  but the front of the house looks awful with some of the shutters down.  We left Mr. Rouss both email and voicemail notifications that if we did not have a refund of our money by today, we were suing him in Small Claims Court.  We even said we would credit him with 1/2 the house power-washing (worth $200) and would accept $800.00 as a refund.
Obviously, we never heard from him.  Monday is a holiday, but Tuesday we will go to the Magistrate's office and start the paperwork to sue him.  We noticed today that his website has been taken down in the past week.  We hope our horrible experience serves as a warning to anyone reading this that T&D is not a reputable outfit to deal with.  If, for some reason, you feel you do want to hire them, do not give them ANY money up front with the possible exception of the cost of materials.  Pay them as you go, day-by-day.  If there are many materials to be purchased, buy them yourself or, if Terry is getting them, pay him only for what he will use day-by-day.  We hope this review will save others from the horrible experience we have had.

    DORSEY'S PAINTING
Tim and his partner were brought in through my general contractor, Steve Harris. Steve is  the one I paid, so I don't know how much went to these guys, but they did such a fab job and then some, wanted to include a review for them as well! They painted my master bath, walls, trim and ceiling as well as the ceiling in the kitchen, living room and foyer. Exterior they did the trim around the front door, and Tim"s partner, sorry I can't remember his name, saw the crappy job I did on painting my sidelights & offered to do those as well, so of course I said yes, then he came to me with the barn star that I have above my front door and mentioned that he saw the hammered spray paint I had in the garage & wanted to know  if I wanted him to hit the star as well!!! In addition to doing a great job, it was the above and beyond touches that pushed them over the top for me! I am normally cheap, no way around it, but I am going to be calling for an estimate for the kitchen and living room walls as a treat for myself!! Thank-you Tim !!!!!

    Steve Harris Contracting LLC
Let me start by saying that i called 10 different contractors, and Steve was the first to call back (some didn't even call back, others 2 weeks later) first to show up for the estimate, and didn't try to talk me into more than was necessary. As a matter of fact, I was the one who kept showing him, one more thing !
Our problems started with a small piece of grout, about 2 inches in length. It fell out from between two tiles @ the bottom of our stand up shower. This allowed water to be wicked behind the tile, causing water damage on the sheetrock behind the tile. For what ever reason, dura rock and or green board, were not used in a small portion of the shower surround. The bathroom had too have all the tile in the stand up shower removed and replaced, as well as having the tub deck shored up for lack of support.
The wet sheet rock became a chalky wet mess, which dripped water onto our kitchen ceiling, causing discoloration and the tape on the ceiling to start to peel. We determined that the whole ceiling would need to be addressed since there were more than 2 dozen nail "pops" and well as several spots where tape was cracked and peeling. My kitchen ceiling runs into my living room as well as the foyer, so all of that would have to painted when the repair was done. I decided to have the hallways as well as common areas repainted in addition to the ceiling and master bath.
While I had Steve looking @ everything, I had him check our storm door which we got to stop water from coming in when it rained. Our whole front door jamb is off, allowing almost a quarter to one half inch of light in on the right side, so every time it rained, it rained inside my front door. The problem was the when another company installed the storm door, they just followed the existing door jamb, giving us a second door that allowed both light and water to come into the house! While he was looking @ the storm door, he noticed that the wood trim above the door had peeling paint and was starting to rot. So we decided to repair, calk and repaint that as well as the ever-growing list of other things that needed to be done!
Steve brought in Randy Travis from Travis tile to do the tile work in the bathroom. He is an artist! It looks so good. In addition to the shower surround, he and his partner, I didn't get her name, dug out the old grout in my tub surround which was crumbling and re-grouted the tub surround as well.
Steve and his assistant Robbie, did all the patch work on the tape and dug out all the old mud from the nail pops and re-muded all of it! Very time consuming, because you had to keep waiting for the mud to dry between each coat. Then came the fun part, sanding it all! They took turns, as one man sanded and the other held a shop vac up next to the sanding blocks to minimize the mess. I have 2 kids, one is only 9 months old, so this was GREATLY appreciated!! I don't have time for extra clean -up!
The brought in Tim from Dorsey's painting and he and his partner, I can't remember his name, did a fabulous job! They painted all the ceilings as well as the master bath ceilings, the master bath walls and trim, the front door wood trim as well as re-doing my bad job on the side lights and even spray painting the star above my front door!
Since Steve was doing so much around the house, I asked him if he wouldn't mind re-hanging a shutter that blew off my house a while ago, it had been sitting in the garage for about 2 years, which they did, looks great! And while we were in the garage, I asked about paint that was peeling around the garage doors and was informed it was starting to rot, they fixed that as well!
It took just under 3 weeks from first call for estimate to completion of work. I would love to use Steve again, though next time for something more fun, like finishing the basement or extending the patio....or maybe a pergola over the extended patio....hmmmmmm.......

    LARRY'S PAINTING & ROOFING
The experience was excellent. Larry did what he said he was going to do, when he said he was going to do it. Based on my experiences with other contractors, etc. in the area, that was priceless. I will definitely be calling him for future work.
