Remodeling Kitchen And Bath reviews in Stoughton

  • Alberto and Elizabeth were great to work with. They provided computer generated designs, and our completed bathroom looks exactly like the rendering. The Kitchen & Bath Solutions (KBS) crew worked hard - sometimes late into the day and on Saturdays to complete the project. Everything was removed from the bathroom - down to the studs. We had a small shower insert that we replaced with tile. Because the walls were built around the insert, we actually gained another foot in the shower - it's very spacious now. We have new cabinets with soft-close drawers and doors and a beautiful new vanity, which was fabricated KBS. We love our new bathroom and would work with KBS again.

  • I was hoping to be able to write this review and give a great recommendation but I can’t. The treatment I received from Sims Exteriors & Remodeling after the job was done was surprising and disappointing. I contracted with them to install a shower in my basement laundry room. I have to say the work they did on the actual shower install was good. They gave me a week and a half timeline and they got the job done right on schedule. The shower looks and works well and I appreciate their work on that. My issue with them is that they moved my old water softener during the install and now it doesn’t work; and Sims has not taken responsibility. After the install, I noticed the softener was not working so I called my representative, Aaron, who visited my home and said it might be something as simple as the breaker it was hooked up to. After consulting an outside electrician, the issue wasn't the breaker yet the water softener still was not working. Aaron then said he would send out their plumber to look at it. The plumber told Aaron that the softener was old and is not working now. Aaron relayed to me the softener could not be fixed but offered to have a new one installed by Sims and they would take $50 off the price of the softener. I explained that I didn’t think that it was right - the softener worked great before they started the work and after they were finished, they reinstalled the softener and now it didn't work. To me, the softener should have been tested after it was reinstalled to see if it worked properly. When I asked Aaron about this, he forwarded my questions to J.W. Sims, the owner. J.W. said the best that his company could do is again the $50 off on the new softener and that his company is being gracious in offering that. I told him that was not acceptable, since the softener worked before they uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I went back and forth with him on emails stating that and his responses back about this situation were amazing to me. The owner of the company chose to make this personal. He said, “we get very tired of people trying to lay blame at our feet without cause.” He also made fun of my softener and the age of the unit. The softener is old, and there is no disputing that, but it worked before the install and didn’t after and no one told me it was broken after it was reinstalled. He said “I do know the plumber was about 8 when it was installed so I am sure that he is not too familiar with that model.” I told him that I just spent $7200 getting this shower installed and that is a lot of money to me so I would expect them to take care of this situation. He then complained about how little his company made on my shower install. He said, “incidentally on a $7200 project, my company clears a net of around $1080.00, barely more than a new softener costs installed.” I would never expect the owner of the company to respond to my emails with these comments (I saved all the emails). After all this, he offered to visit my house and discuss this matter. How he would think that I would allow him in my home after all this is astonishing! I handled the water softener on my own, not accepting his offer. All I can say is that I would never recommend Sims to anyone. If something goes wrong, you are on your own and there is a chance you will get the same treatment.

  • Jason was very prompt when contacted about getting a quote for water lines in my basement bathroom remodel. My basement was roughed-in somewhat incorrectly, Jason offered up a great solution to address my layout questions. He suggested moving a problematic vent line to a different location. His guy (forgot his name) worked quickly and cleanly and was able to finish the project without any problems. He also answered a few next-step type questions that I had as I will be installing the actual shower and sink, this was very appreciated.
Jason walked me through the fished install and made sure I didn't have any other questions or concerns.
I absolutely will be calling Jason back should I have other plumbing needs/questions.

  • Mike and his team did a total master bathroom renovation in our 100+ year old home.  He walked me through the entire process and was so thorough in helping me decide on the floor plan, the materials and the timeline.  He NEVER rushed me through any of the process and offered his expert advise in areas where I was unsure of what I wanted.  Anytime I needed to get in contact with him he also responded almost immediately.  Mike was great to work with and I knew I was in good hands from day one.  Jeff was the project manager and arrived to our home always on time and in great spirits.  His work was beautiful and he always kept everything incredibly neat and tidy.  Sometimes I even forgot he was in the house!  His craftsmanship and quality of work was exceptional as was the work done by the plumber and electrician they brought in.  I would not hesitate to call Mike and his team in should we need more work down on our second bathroom.  I am beyond thrilled with our new bathroom!!!

  • Jason was great! I called him last minute because I was not going to use the original plumber we had again after he left us without water in the kitchen for 5 days during our remodel and would not respond to phone calls. Jason worked us in and was very understanding that with two small children we could not be left without water. He promised that he would not leave that day until he had everything installed and worked and he was true to his word. He was prompt, professional, friendly, respectful, did a great job, and came in under his quote. Jason will be my first call the next time I need a plumber and I've already recommended him to friends.

  • My wife and I contacted Waunakee Remodeling to bid on a kitchen/bath/bedroom addition for our home.  We had previously used Waunakee Remodeling to do $20,000 in replacement windows and doors.  We did have issues with the door replacement which was ordered incorrectly and quickly installed while we were away at work.  After some discussion, they admitted the door had been incorrectly changed at the factory.  Given that they had made good on their previous mistake, we thought we would try them again.

I contacted them back in early March and was asked by Brian to call back and have someone else schedule him to come out - which, by the way, should have been my first clue as to how this would turn out.  I was told by the scheduler that Brian could come out a week later - in the late afternoon.  The day of the appointment, Brian called to see if I could meet him a couple of hours earlier since he was free and didn't want to wait if he didn't have to.  Since I was already taking time off from work to meet him, I wasn't able to.

Brian showed up and took a look at our plans and walked around the house a bit.  He seemed confused by the fact that we were already working with a professional designer and liked the layout we had come up with.  He didn't really take any measurements and did only a cursory look outside.  He then told us he would go back to the office and come up with a detailed estimate that would take approximately one week.  Three days later, we received an email with an estimate of approximately $235K - no details, no idea of the basis for it.  As estimated, the per square foot cost was over $500.

I sent a response back to Brian indicating that seemed more than a little extreme.  I never received a reply. That is the last time I have or will contact Waunakee Remodeling.

  • DO NOT hire Rhothmen Erickson and Esox Remodeling unless you want substandard work that is never actually completed. I needed someone to install the tile on the floor and shower of the bathroom I was remodeling and found out about this company by looking for providers on Craig's List that performed tile work. At first Rothman was very responsive and available to start when I needed him. The price seemed fair and when I called he got glowing references. Don't believe them!

While initially he was very responsive and showed up on time, once he began the job that changed quickly. One day he was supposed to be there at 9am. We had plans and were just waiting for him to come so we could leave to meet out of town family. Once he was a half hour late I tried to call him, and several times after that. He never did answer his phone or respond to the messages I left, but came waltzing in at 2pm as if it were no big deal. We completely missed seeing the visiting family, on top of which we have 2 small children and 2pm is nap time, so of course he shows up to make a lot of noise right next to their bedrooms. When I challenged him about it, he said there was an emergency with his dog. This is just one example of his complete lack of professionalism and respect.

His work is also completely subpar. The tile isn't straight. The corners look horrible. He didn't line anything up properly. He used chipped tiles, even though I had several boxes of extra and made it very clear that I wanted him to sort through and only use good pieces. He wasted tons of sheets of very expensive mosaic tile, I assume because he was too lazy to make the remainders on the sheet work. He cut the marble baseboard incorrectly so there is over an inch gap between it and the door casing. These are all things I saw after he left.

Before he left when he was "finished" I pointed out several issues.

    1. He left an entire piece near the tub unfinished, just exposed plywood, I think because he didn't know how to tile it. He told me to just paint it. I said that was unacceptable and he needed to tile it.

    2. I also pointed out you can see the plywood at the threshold going into the room because the transition piece wasn't placed properly.

    3. He was supposed to replace the wood casing around the door, but "forgot" his finishing gun. (It was only when I went to do it myself, that I discovered he had cut the marble baseboard incorrectly so there is over an inch gap between the baseboard and the casing.)

    4. There were screws sticking over an inch into my linen closet from where he installed the du-rock, which would of course catch and rip my linens. (When I called this to his attention, he banged a few of them down, but it turns out left most of them exactly as they had been, so I got to cut those off too.)

Based on these 4 remaining issues, I said I would pay him $750 of the $850, paying the remainder when he completed the additional work. He insisted on being paid in full, complaining that he had done the work and I had no reason not to trust him to come back. He insisted he would come by one day the next week and fix the remaining issues, but needed to be paid now. Like an idiot, I gave in and paid him in full (my mistake). For the next 2 weeks I attempted to contact him through phone and email and never heard back from him. It has now been 2 months. He will not respond to phone calls or messages. I now have to hire someone else to complete was he was paid to do. Even more annoying, I am irritated every day I use that bathroom because I see all the places he messed up that I now have to live with for decades. Save yourself the aggravation and stay away from this "contractor." His craftsmanship and attention to detail are completely subpar and his level of professionalism is laughable. I wish someone had posted a review before I mad the colossal mistake of hiring him.

  • Awful from start to finish and not even punctual.  Where to even start?

There was a crucial lack in basic communication with the other contractors, resulting in not getting what we expressly ( as in, told Adams numerous times what we wanted and expressly didn't want) wanted.

We didn't get the heating method we expressly  wanted and ended up with what we expressly didn't want. Adams hadn't conveyed what we had specified to the electrician, so the correct wiring wasn't  done. When I brought this up and said how unhappy I was, I got a bunch of b.s.  I was so sick of Adams that it seemed preferable to just go along with it.

We wanted a permanent dog ramp built into our patio because of the amount of stairs. We mentioned this several times. Adams didn't tell this to the people who did the patio.

We wondered why our new room was so cold and found out that the heating duct work wasn't set up to heat our room ( over 50%of the walls of the room are  windows) and those contractors were under the impression that we would use our wood burning stove for heating.

The quality of work was sloppy- from painting, to nail gunning, outdoor stairs, etc... The wrong paint colors were used twice,

materials weren't ordered in time by Adams resulting in delays, the guy in charge was absolutely disgusting when he used our bathroom (which he did a lot and left it in a disgusting state) even walking in on us.

There is more, but I just don't have all day.

  • He was hired to do complete removal of kitchen countertops and sink, along with the plumbing necessary.  Same for 2 baths.  He took them off and gently placed back on.  It was to measure for granite countertops, then wait for them to be installed.  Then, in the quote, I was told that it would cover them being removed again and the plumbing all hooked back up again.  I did almost all of the countertop removal the scond time and he needed to come and reinstall the plumbing, which was also in the quote.  It took about a week to get things hooked back up again.  I was charged more than the original quote yet I did all of the removal the second time because he could not get back out here in time.  When  I received the quote, he said that was the MOST he would charge but he would modify that to correspond to actual hours, which were significantly less than projected.

As it turns out, without me realizing it, the kitchen sink was not properly reinstalled, nor was the garbage disposal and the cabinet was FLOODED and had been for a while.  When I turned on the garbage disposal, water was leaking all over.  I called him to see about getting it fixed and he said he would come out the next week.  He never got back to me and didn't come out.  I contacted him again with no response.  He said..."Call a plumber."  I said it was his job to see if it could be reply.

Update...I called a plumber and got it fixed. $250.00. I let him know this is what happened and he let me know right away that he would not reimburse me. Funny thing is that I didn't ask for any reimbursement. He said that he has done 50 or so jobs like mine over the years and they have never leaked, to which I said "this one did."

3 things had to be fixed:

    1. Wrong joint was used to take water from the garbage disposal. A straight joint was used when it should have have been flared.

    2. A gasket should have been used to seal the drain on the sink without the disposal. All he had to do was run hot water in that sink and the putty warmed up enough that the entire drain jiggled and water leaked out...right from the basin.

    3. The garbage disposal was not properly locked when reinstalled. All 3 things were considered entry level knowledge according to to the plumber. My cost to clean up after I had already paid handsomely to have this work done earlier? Way too much. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.... He won't stand behind this teeny little project? Buyer beware...

  • The crew came on time everyday and began by laying drop clothes wherever the would be working or walking. A licensed plumber and electrician was present to do the appropriate work. Everyday I was asked if the work was done to my specifications and approval. Andy Hino was constantly on site to supervise and answer any questions that I had. Before leaving for the day all drop clothes were folded and removed and working area cleaned. This is very important since they were working on the master bath. These guys were so good and polite they almost became family. They will be working for me again this fall and later in the spring remodeling another bathroom. THANKS ANGIE'S LIST!!!!
