  • I purchased a water heater from Sears with a 9 year warranty. 3 years ago it failed. After 4 or 5 visits from the repairman they gave up and sent me a new one which I was told to install myself. We were without hot water for about 3 weeks and were charged about $250 in repair charges.
Flash forward to January 2014. The "new" water heater is still under warranty and has failed again. Calling the number provided for repair service routes you to a national call center where I was told the earliest appointment would be 2 1/2 weeks out. Knowing from my previous experience that the service technician would arrive without any spare parts, order them after the first visit, and  then require you to schedule a new appointment an additional 2 1/2 weeks out, I pleaded for an earlier initial appointment with no help. Every time you call back you speak with a different person. Some individuals sympathized but could do nothing, others were downright rude. Here's the abbreviated version of my experiences:
    1) Attempts to speak to a supervisor resulted in being placed on hold for an hour, hung up on, or told I would be contacted by a supervisor within 2 hours, but never called back.
    2) The warranty department refused to send any replacement parts without a service technician inspection (2 1/2 weeks) and then actually suggested I purchase a large pot for heating water on my stove for a sponge baths.
    3) I finally found a "Customer Care" number for those with "Purchased Extended Warranties"  (unlike my Kenmore manufacturers 9 year warranty) and was able to convince them to intercede for me and move my appointment up. Guess what? The repairman didn't carry the part and had to order one. Then when he came back and installed it, it still didn't work and had to order another one.
    4) When the second part arrived I tried to bypass the call center and get the repairman back. No luck. He never returned my calls. New appointment required.
I'm a mechanical engineer, so I installed the burner assembly myself (not recommended for others) and got the water heater working again. I was without hot water for 9 days.
In the midst of this experience, I called the local store manager who tried to intercede for me, and he was able to get my second repair visit moved up, but while obviously sympathetic and wanting to help, was trapped by the same crazy nightmare as me.
Bottom line: I have a home full of Sears Kenmore appliances, because I was a loyal customer who valued their repair service.
I've instructed my wife to shoot me if I ever do, and she said she had worse things in mind. :-)
