General Contracting reviews in Oshkosh

    E&A Commercial-Home Repair/Remodeling
We hired Alfonso to renovate our newly purchased investment property above our business in Oshkosh. He agreed, showed up and gave us a quote, and we paid for materials. He was paid for windows (double paned, new, and professionally installed), new counters (custom ordered to fit our kitchen), new trim and new drywall throughout the living area. He was also supposed to paint the entire outside of the building, minus the front, which we agreed to pay him separately for (but never did because he didn't bother finishing that either). The project was supposed to be completed before July 1st, and he assured us they were fast and would be done before we knew it. We were super excited, loved Alfonso and couldn't wait to work with him. He was part of our BNI group, so we had established some trust with him, via other reviews and people who vouched for him. Big MISTAKE. We should have done a basic background check. He has multiple police complaints for bounced checks, criminal records, etc. He is not a trustworthy person. Our money promptly was spent, because our materials never showed. They did demo work promptly and gutted the apartment. Unfortunately, they were sloppy and left sharp glass all over our backyard at the studio, and were not careful with our rubber roof. Luckily, they didn't damage it, but the guys working on the project were not being watched and they clearly didn't care about damage to the property. The guys working were not legally hired, as we found out later, and most are no longer working for Alfonso. He runs a completely shady business and I am still kicking myself for not recognizing it sooner. The project really never got farther than the drywall being put up, and that was a disaster on its own. There are gaps everywhere, all of the seams show and the texture is something painters have nightmares about. It took tons of paint to be able to cover it (it is incredibly thick and rough, and they ended up not covering or taping off everything, so the walls that were supposed to be left alone, also got a good dose of texture (over paneling that we wanted to keep clean). They felt "bad" about the work and the time it was taking to get the work done (it was now end of July and they were no where near done with anything) so they offered to install our new floor for free. IT TOOK TWO DAYS for them to put down half of the living room floor with vinyl laminate flooring. It was installed wrong and multiple boxes were broken to the point of not being usable. My business partner finally told them to stop, and he had the floor done properly within 4 hours. They hadn't even bothered to clean the floors up prior, and we found nails underneath the floor that they laid. It was a mess. The bathroom window was installed multiple times, all wrong. It is still not even and is installed wrong again, which will need to be done over. The floors were damaged because they drug their equipment over it and scratched it. The windows were never delivered, yet he had his guys pull out the old windows, leave the apartment open for days, and since we were interested in protecting our investment, we went and purchased windows ourselves. (Remember, we had already paid for these in the beginning, so this was the second time we paid for them). He did come back and install them, which looked good at first, but unfortunately, he put them in too tight, and didn't weather proof the outsides. Now the windows are popping open and won't close because of the poor installation. They will all need to be redone. Last month (September!!!) he told us he was going to get the job done and pay us for all of the lost income from the months that he sat on the project. Well, more lies. He showed up with two more windows, that he paid for by taking one of our good windows in and trading it for two cheap windows. These windows are single pane and the seals were coming off. The counters still hadn't shown up and we were expecting a dark grey color, ordered from Menards. The counters had M. Schettl stickers all over them (a used, discount store) and he stood there and claimed, to our face, that they were from menards and were the color we ordered. They are a rosy color. Not even close to the same color we ordered. They are also damaged and warped. He cut them himself, and they also did not fit properly. There is an easy fix to this, but instead he blamed the counters not being even. Well, typically, you fix that instead of making excuses. You are the contractor, its your job to make it work. After this, he quit on us and took his tools and materials out of the apartment. The place is a mess, not even close to done, and suddenly his phone is off and we can't reach him. He did try to email me, and we are still in contact, but I have yet to receive a refund. I have filed a police report and will be taking him to court, given he doesn't pay in full. Please be aware who you are hiring. I didn't even put all of the details in here because it would take all day. Lets just say that nothing was delivered, we have a lot more into this project than we should have and we still don't have a rentable place to make back the expensive mistake that was hiring Alfonso.

    Wind River Const LLC
Wind River Const . Resided House & garage with new insulation & Steel siding. Replaced windows & doors. They rebuilt front porch. Also re-wrapped window frames with aluminum coil stock. It was a two month project. Front porch was in bad shape needed to be jacked up . New framing had to be done to replace rotten wood supports. New windows were framed in to replace screening. Front porch was made into 4 season room turned out beautiful beyond plans.   House was built in 1935, so this was first total exterior rebuild. It was long and interesting to see house stripped to bare wood frame.

    Paul Davis
The drywall work and painting that was completed was acceptable. Countertop installation was not done very well. An 1/8" gap still remains between the countertop and wall requiring me having to caulk. Cabinet installation and laminate floor was OK. The mold remediation was compromised. They did not properly secure the area that was supposed to be sealed off and made a negative pressure area. The grout in our tile floor in the kitchen began to break up and tiles started to become loose because of improper installation. The company came out and inspected the floor and determined, in writing, that the mud was too dry when the floor was originally installed. They offered to settle for approximately $500 less than it will cost to replace my floor. The offer was also approximately $650 less than what they were originally paid to complete the service. When comparing the estimates from 2006 and the recent settlement offer, the company underestimated the most recent estimate of square footage and downgraded the tile. In addition they did not account for other items charged in 2006 such as, replacement and removal of stove, plumbing services to remove and replace dishwasher, etc.
