I'm 94 yrs. old, was experiencing extreme pain, but my nurse coordinator continually made appointments for me with a nurse practitioner, even though I asked to see a doctor several times. I was told the doctor in that department (Pain Mgmt) was on vacation. However, I later found out that he was not on vacation. I had several appointments with the NP as the pain continually worsened. I was given lumbar shots, pain medication and patches, yet the pain continued to worsen. Eventually, the pain that had started on my left side began to extend around my entire lower back, groin area and down into my legs. My family requested an MRI in late May, which they did, reluctantly. I had told them from the beginning that I believed a bone was causing all the pain, but they diagnosed it as inflammation of the muscle, nerve impingement, arthritis, stenosis and degenerative bone disease. I had most of these prior to the new pain I was experiencing. My daughter requested that I be hospitalized to find out what was really causing such unbearable pain, but the NP told her I didn't need to be hospitalized because I wasn't sick. Therefore, I continued treatment as an out-patient. I went to the ER several times. The pain continued to worsen until I was bed-ridden. My legs were too weak to stand on. My daughter tried to get authorization for a 2nd opinion, either in-network or out-of-network. Unfortunately, their network provider was 2-1/2 hours away, while the out-of-network provider was an hour away. Our request for a 2nd opinion was blocked before it reached my primary care provider, who was the designated person to begin the process. I was in such horrific pain that I just wanted to die. I lost 20 lbs. in 3 mos. My daughter called a doctor in the Pain Clinic and pleaded with him to PLEASE expedite a request for a 2nd opinion out-of-network because I would never be able to tolerate a 2-1/2 hour drive to their network provide. He refused. Therefore, due to my critical condition, my daughter drove me, lying in the back seat of her car, writhing and moaning in pain, to the out-of-network provider, an hour away, where I was hospsitalized, seen by numerous specialists and diagnosed with a compression fracture.
