We responded to the vehicle ad on craigslist and went to the dealership to see and purchase the vehicle.  We live about 2.5 hours (140 miles) from the dealership.  From this distance the initial phone calls and reliability of the dealer was of the essence.  We had asked about body defects, engine problems, 4WD problems, etc . . . all the pertinent buying a new/used vehicle questions.  The salesman told us this vehicle was in 'perfect condition'  and there were no problems defects or body problems at all.  Upon arrival of the dealership it was later in the evening, the vehicle was running in the parking lot, all the parking lot lights were turned off and it was very dark.  The salesman was pushy, seemed to be in a hurry and a little rude.   My husband tried very hard to inspect the outside of the jeep with his cell phone light.  In that darkness he could not see anything wrong with the body of the vehicle.  Upon further inspection, opening doors, looking it over he found the back hatch would catch and have a hard time opening making a popping sound.  The salesman told me that he had just cleared the ice and snow from the top and that there was some ice caught near the hinges.  After test driving the vehicle my husband informed him the brakes were bad.  He said it was just snow and ice in the tires.  I told him no, those are bad brakes.  He agreed the brakes were bad and said that he would pitch in the labor for the breaks if we paid for the parts and brought the jeep back for the brakes to be done at their shop.  My husband did agree to this and ultimately purchased the jeep.  The next day we were sorry we did.  Here is a list of things we found wrong with the vehicle in addition to the brakes . . . .
-coolant leaking from the radiator (only when the vehicle is not running)
    -flashing 4WD light
    -flashing tire pressure light
    -check engine light on
    -turn signal burnt out
    -reverse light burnt out
-window control on drivers side window not working (the window has to be pulled up on by had for it to be returned to the closed position)
-rear hatch did not open properly (it was NOT ice build up)
-rear window defroster cable hanging and not connected
-part of the front bumper zip-tied on
-rear light cracked/bumper dented in same area
-dents/gouges/scratches on vehicle body (some of the scratches had been filled in with marker to hide them)
-navigation system was advertised on the vehicle documents but the CD was not included so it didn't work
    -no owners manual
    -horn didn't work
My husband called the salesman at the dealership the next day to report all these problems and was told 'There was nothing we can do.' 'You had every opportunity to inspect the vehicle.'  This conversation got very heated. The salesman was EXTREMELY rude, would not let him talk to the owner of the dealership (he said he was out of the country). My husband was basically laughed at and hung up on. We have never been treated so disrespectfully by a business ever.  Buyer beware.  This vehicle was put through their inspection . . . AND PASSED!!!  I will not be bringing the Jeep back to have the break work done as we do not trust their service.
