Concrete Driveway Installation reviews in Newcastle

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Conclusion: Has the right tools, Fast, Negotiable Got quotes and talked with 3 different contractors. First was cheap and sketchy, Second had good reviews and had good pricing, Third was Island Concrete. (Will be honest he was the most expensive but also was able to negotiate to almost match others price and I don't think the others would have done as good of a job.) Island Concrete was the only contractor that mentioned the potential issues that the other contractors didn't bring up. Venly also had very useful suggestions as he saw that my idea wasn't going to look to good. He was right. Final result looks good and was done right. I have a security camera that I watched to see if they skipped any steps. Just want to bring up some more important things about Island Concrete. 1) I hired them same day they came out to do the quote. He was able to bring his professional tools on site that night and ripped the entire driveway out and dug up the 2 extensions. The concrete was pored and finished the next day. 2) When the Concrete truck was coming in it knocked out one of the overhead power lines to my house. I was away from home during this time. When I got home he got it it was already fixed but I noticed it was replaced. Neighbors told me what happened and that Venly had PSE come out and fix it properly and waited to make sure nothing went wrong. Neighbors also mentioned that he did a very good job and worked very hard all day. I obviously didn't have to pay for the power line issue but I just wanted to bring up how everything was taken care of before I gotten home professionally and Venly never asked for money to fix it. 3) They cleaned up nicely didn't leave any mess. After the job was done I noticed some touch-up stuff. They came the next day and solved my issues. 4) Venly was able to negotiate and wanted to make sure I was happy with the work. <-- Most important.

  • Great work, always checked in with us for a few changes to schedule. The stamped concrete looks fantastic. We will hire this team for many upcoming projects. Price was substantially better than two other quotes so now that they have done a great job, we wouldn't use anyone else else.

  • Nealy came right out, same day. Quoted $1,800 for repair. Really pushed hard to repair a crack I did not think needed doing for and additional $400. He said he could make it all match. I approved all work They repaired all areas. The problems; The crack did not look any better after repair, possibly worse. (See Picture) The large repair area was not washed equally creating the aggregate effect. Some areas not washed enough not showing much aggregate, other areas badly pitted (washed too much) See attached picture. This was completed around sunset so it was hard for me to see how it came out. By his contract I paid $200 down, $1800 at start of job and $200 after his return the next day when he was to come back and use something that would darken and age the repair to get it to match. At the end of the job he pushed hard for the remaining $200 (against what his proposal stated) I declined. He aid he would be back in two days. The next morning I saw how bad it had turned out and saw the washed off concrete all over the rest of driveway, lawn and down the street. I clean all up, waited for his return. He came back about 5 days after he said he would. I pointed out the problems, he agreed and said he would fix it no problem. That was the last I saw of him. I would call and bug him but it is my belief that if a mans word is not good, then any additional work I got would not be worth paying the outstanding $200. Apparently Nealy made a business decision that he did not want to do what was required to make my driveway right for the last $200 agreed on the proposal. I try hard to not feel used or ripped off when that is now more often the case than not. This job felt like a rip off to me.

  • Overall work was completed in a timely manner. I met with Nelson on Friday last week, made 1 of 3 payments on the job (1/3rd of cost each payment) with agreement they would come back on Saturday to start the work of removing old single car driveway and widen for two cars. They were suppose to start around 9am but got to my home around 11 am as they were running late. When they arrived they had a bob cat to start tearing up and removing the driveway. (Concern is that 2 older children were brought to job site while the bobcat was in use which is a huge liability concern for a home owner.) By around 5pm excavation of old driveway and widening had been completed and forms were placed and gravel was dumped. Then got call from Nelson on Monday that they were going to be pouring concrete since temperature was good for pouring, concrete truck showed up around 11 am before Nelson was on site but he showed up shortly afterwards. His helper started laying down rebar in 2x2 foot sections, then they poured the concrete and smoothed out the surface. Nelson mentioned that we couldn't park on the drive for at least 7-10 days with current temp (40-50 degrees) but could walk on it after 24hrs. I am very satisfied with my new drive way and the work that was done, of course we won't know until we actually start parking on drive how solid the pad is. Only other things that I wasn't to happy about is the mess as I have a new rod iron fence (actually Alumni) that is only 3 months old that has concrete splatter all over it, especially at the end of the drive where on Monday the helper sprayed off their tools that splattered on my fence and trash/recycle bins. There is some back filling along my fence that still needing to be done as in the initial discussion we were going to leave 6 inches of existing yard but when they excavated the drive they took it up to the fence line. Nelson has agreed to back fill when they return to pickup their wheel barrow that was left at my home on Monday and their forms. Final concern was after the concrete was poured Nelson asked me to write check to the concrete guy after I had already paid him around $4k, so I wrote a check to the concrete guy and deducted amount from final payment to Nelson which wouldn't be a big deal but would recommend you discuss this with your client before hand. Now outside these concerns I would say that work performed was done well and quickly, I would recommend them to others for work.

  • The dog run and the driveway came out  nice.
My  concern is I never received a copy of the driveway receipt even though I asked several times and called and called for my copy.
I would recommend you have everything in writing before you begin and get a copy before you start the job.
Also, don't lend them any of your tools. I like to give them the benefit of the doubt  and think they didn't take  my shovel knowingly, I just think they thought it was theirs when they left.

  • I am very happy with the quality of work.  The workers did take their time showing up but also put in long hours in the hot sun once they got on site and started work.  Clean up took longer than I had wished for but when it was finally done they had done a good job.

  • Sione and his crew were wonderful to work with. He communicated well with us during the bidding process and when we had questions or concerns during the project. They know what they are doing and do it well... the completed project definitely reflects this. They always showed up on time, and even finished 1 day ahead of schedule. On top of everything, their prices were cheaper than the competition. They took great care of our property, tidying up at the end of every day and making sure the sidewalk was swept and clear. We are extremely happy with how our stamped concrete driveway turned out, and happy that we went with Jay Construction.  We would use Sione and the Jay Construction crew again without hesitation.

  • I would highly rate them. They did a very complex patio. They were 40 minutes late and the concrete froze before they could finish setting it. So they made it up with jack hammers and they poured it the second time and it came out absolutely great. I did give them a little extra to compensate for the unexpected cost for the bad concrete which he couldn’t do anything about. They were clean and hardworking. They were very conscientious. I have called them for another work this summer.

  • The worst experience of my life.  The job was so badly done, in a driving rain storm that was predicted a full 24+ hours before.  They arrived while no one was at home and poured the concrete for driveway and back yard patio.  It looks horrible and they refused to do anything about it.  One section they had to replace as it was worse than the rest and was crumbling.  Mapa, the owner, said he would fix  the rest, came out once and tried to seal it and gave up.  He confronted me in a local QFC and I told him I wanted him to come out and fix it before I gave him another dime. I've not heard a word since.  They destroyed my landscaping on the side yard, did not clean up what they should have.  Let their lunch garbage for us to pick up and put in outside garbage can.  Left pieces of concrete for me to dispose of.  The driveway and patio still look horrible and it is going to cost me thousands more to fix it from a reputable company.  I'd be more than happy for anyone to come out and look at AMP's pathetic workmanship.
