Concrete Driveway Installation reviews in Lakewood

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • Very motivated the first couple of days. Then they started asking for more cash. Neighbors called to complain about them urinating in their back yard. I observed the workers stuffing rocks inside the void spaces of the cinder blocks that were supposed to be poured with concrete, comprising stability but saving them time, material, and money. Not cool. Mike, the owner, will be aggressive to get his money well before the job is done. Beware of that. He will try to sub out to his lower level workers once you’ve paid a large portion. Ultimately, this was a nightmare and the job never got completed. Poor quality. My wife and I are reasonable people and do not wish ill will onto anyone. But, we DO NOT recommend iate Life Concrete for any service.

    • First to Review

I am pleased to give RTC a 5-Star review. Rick is very professional and helpful. He has done two jobs for us. Both times he arrived on time with his crew ready to work. They all worked quickly and efficiently. They removed a sidewalk for us a couple of years ago, leaving the trench for us to do as we pleased, exactly as we wanted. Today, they were out removing a chimney base which they did as promised.

As sometimes happens with demo jobs, we had a snag. This was NOT Rick's nor his crew's fault. The entire stack slipped nearly an inch, so they had to shore it up. Unfortunately, we need to remove the entire stack, which means a new ticket. Again, this is no reflection on them. It's just how it goes with old construction. Perhaps we should have done the entire stack from the start, but I was following the advice of a foundation leveling company. (I'm just relieved nobody was hurt when the stack nearly gave way).

Rick took the time to explain in detail what happened and what needs to be done.

We plan more demo projects on our property and will certainly call Rick back to do them.

The office staff is always courteous and professional. Always a pleasure working with this company. He has a sweet little dog too. Always trust a person who has a good dog! :)

Thanks for all your hard work and you will hear from us in the future!

  • 6/11/2015 update:
The day after I posted my original review (see below), I was contacted by a company representative. He was very apologetic and acknowledged that communication had indeed been poor, adding by way of explanation that our replacement project manager had taken a different position in the company and the transition to a new project manager hadn't received the proper attention. He offered us fair compensation for the property damage and payment arrived promptly by mail. We are currrently scheduling an opportunity for System Pavers to deliver the promised pavers to be used for any future repairs.

In light of the recent fast and courteous response, I have raised the composite Responsiveness Rating from an "F - Lousy" to a "C - Fair." In retrospect, I realize the original "D - Bad" Punctuality Rating was primarily related to the tardy salesman and did not reflect the subcontractors that accomplished the work, so I have raised that score to a "B - Good." Most interactions I have had with System Pavers and their subcontractors have been polite, and the recent interactions have improved the experience as a whole, bringing the Professionalism Rating up from a "D - Bad" to a "C - Fair." Collectively, these have raised the overall rating from a "D - Bad" to a "C - Fair." Absent the damage and communications issues, I would likely have arrived at an Overall Rating of "B - Good." I would now consider using this provider again in the future.

    Original review:
We decided to purchase the pavers despite the salesman. The sales presentation started out well enough, but became a grueling marathon ~3 hour session. The salesman was late to arrive for our appointment but seemed enthusiastic, bringing multiple paver samples from the car for us to review. After the initial pitch, we asked for the estimate so that we could consider it in private. He went into overdrive, almost pleading for the sale. He complained about how long his day was and how far he had driven, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he had kept us from dinner for over an hour. He was very slow to arrive at a cost (most of our other estimates took 15 minutes or less) and it didn't strike us that he had much design experience beyond on-the-job training. He was transparently trying out cost estimates to see if he was getting close. His initial quote was almost $32/ft2, appreciably more than stamped concrete. Ultimately, he went into used car salesman mode, offered us a price that was comparable to the concrete estimates we had in hand ($25.50/ft2 including demolition and disposal), then proceeded to "call his manager" and "go to bat for us" to see if he could get that price! We were sufficiently interested that we provided the requisite downpayment to get the salesman out of the house, knowing that we had the opportunity to cancel the contract for a full refund. In the end, we decided that we liked the pavers more than the concrete option and decided to proceed.

System Pavers subcontracted the patio demo and installation. Two gentleman came to demolish our existing patio by hand with sledgehammers. They spoke very little English, so it was critical that the assigned project manager was onsite to get the project started and impart the design that we had come up with ourselves. The plastic film they taped up over our large sliding glass doors seemed flimsy protection, but we didn't see any damage. The men were pleasant, worked incredibly hard, and did a fine job installing the patio. However, our concrete driveway was heavily scarred by being repeatedly scraped by the hitch of the trailer used to haul the debris. They had recognized in advance that the hitch of the trailer would scrape the concrete when pulling the trailer in and out of position and discussed this with the System Paver project manager, but they opted to proceed anyway. (Don't get me wrong--our old concrete driveway is certainly no thing of beauty, but intentional damage by a "professional contractor" is unacceptable.) I also observed the crew backing their trailer into our rockery wall along the driveway, but based upon the sledgehammer work required to repair the wheel well, it appeared to do more damage to their trailer than our wall.
The subcontractors broke a custom window (which, to their credit, they were quick to bring to our attention), along with a wooden tool rack that was in the way of their preferred wheelbarrow dump route. They put the broken window frame in the trash, but did not clean up the broken glass, which then washed into our planter beds during heavy rain (necessitating that we spend a few hours sorting glass from dirt). They disposed of a section of our aluminum downspout, perhaps not recognizing that it had only been temporarily moved from another location on the house to direct water away from the excavation, and crushed another downspout elbow with their trailer. According to our System Pavers salesperson, the contractors were supposed to leave us with 15-20 extra pavers so that we would have color-matched pavers for any future damage or repairs; the subcontractors packed up all the remaining pavers and we have yet to receive replacements. Clean-up from demolition was not great and we are still picking up fragments of concrete from the lawn and planter beds.

Our young System Pavers project manager left the company during our project (of his own volition or not, we don't know), so the person that (presumably) authorized the contractors to damage our concrete driveway with their trailer hitch is no longer available to discuss the matter or the remedies. A new project manager was eventually assigned and, despite early frequent communication (generally by cell phone and personal rather than company e-mail), it took several weeks just to have the wooden pallets the pavers arrived on to be hauled away from the front of our house. (The new project manager did also clean up the broken glass that was left on our neighbors property, which we appreciated.)

In November 2014, we were able to arrange a change order to arrange for reimbursement for the broken window, replacement of the missing and damaged downspouts, and a replacement tool rack; they don't appear interested in reimbursing us for our time cleaning up glass and concrete after their subcontractors. We were, however, able to secure a written guarantee that should the very close proximity of the pavers to our new cedar siding (1/16-inch in some places) ever cause water damage or be found not to meet code, System Pavers will repair/replace at their cost. System Pavers only remedy so far for the intentional damage to our concrete driveway is to have a 5-foot section of the driveway pressure-washed so as to make the damage less apparent. As of May 20, 2015 (6 months later), none of these remedies have yet occurred. I will update if and when the Company completes this project to our satisfaction.

  • Chad and his crew removed many truckloads of brush and small trees, graded for a new foundation and constructed a new driveway for a new home we are building. All of the work was done quickly and done right. I am a retired builder with 50 years of experience so I've hired dozens of excavators in the past. When we are ready for our old house demolition and final grading I'll be pleased to call Chad again.
