10 Questions to Ask a Masonry Contractor

    Archstone Masonry
Jerrod and his crew are the best. Showed up when expected, cleaned up the area before leaving, and went beyond by sweeping out the chimney and inside the firebox for no additional charge. The work replacing the brick on the outside of our fireplace was exceptional. They didn't have the same style brick, but the way they installed the new brick made it look like it was always like that. They also only replaced what was needed. Jerrod bids a little high trying to account for anything they may run into, but actual cost was much less. I would hire Archstone Masonry again for any stone work.

    Guardian Roofing
Recieved three bids from locally well known roofing companies recommended by friends. Guardian was the only one to request attic access during the bid process. Identified additional problems and included those items as part of their bid; thus eliminating unplanned non-recurring (surprize) additional costs during the installation project. All three bids were within $2K of each other; however, Guardian non-recurring work was part of their bid, and was not the highest bid submitted. Crews arrived on the day and time scheduled in advance; cleaned up complely (roofing paper, shingles, nails, staples, wood scrapes, etc.) at the end of each workday over the three day project. Foreman walked through progress at the end of every work day and upon completion. Two weeks after project completition, Guardian conducted an internal photo review of the project at their offices; identified a few minor items to address; contacted us and completed those items a few days later. Entire project from bid, installation, clean up, follow up was EXCELLENT!!

    Bear Creek Landscaping LLC
Rob McJunkin was an absolute pleasure to work with through both phases as well as the landscaping crew.  They were communicative and punctual and after each day they completely cleaned up the project area as well as completely hosing down and cleaning our driveway and any areas of use.
In our initial meeting with Rob, we gave him a run down of the changes we wanted to make.  Rob picked out the stone shapes and colors for us and when I went to look at the materials prior to phase one, I was very pleased with his selections.  His choices look absolutely beautiful in our backyard.  The colors complement our existing stamped patio, our house color and a new Trex deck on the horizon.
Bear Creek Landscaping will be our go to landscaping company for years to come!

    Prestige Chimney Services
Scheduling was a complete and total nightmare.  Time from my first phone call to work completed was more than 8 months.
For about 6 weeks straight, I called, left a message and then waited to hear back about scheduling.  Twice I received estimates from a different customer referencing some sort of wall reconstruction bid.  When I asked questions, responses were delayed, or provided by someone other than the person who did the estimate.  Eventually, it was discovered that there was another customer in the same city with the same first time and a "similar" last name, and therefore, my estimate actually hadn't been done.  Finally, I just gave up.  Looking in my records, I purchased the "Big Deal" from Angie's List email promotions on 8/5/14.  I started working with Angie's list to get my money refunded once I felt like I couldn't get this scheduled - THIS IS A HUGE DRAWBACK OF ALL THE BIG DEALs.  They get your money, then you can't schedule within the 30 day "money back guarantee" window, and then they've got your money and can take as long as they want to get things set up.
Suddenly, I started getting emails to schedule the work in the spring, and I managed to get on their calendar for April 2015.
I had specifically looked up reviews for individual workers, because reviews of C&H were all over the board - some very positive, some negative.  After specific positive reviews for Mike and John the masons, I scheduled for them to do the work.  They showed up on time, were respectful and I was impressed that they were able to do the repair without having to purchase any additional stone to replace what they had taken apart.  There were probably 100 pieces of brick, some of them specially formed corners, so the fact that they were able to clean these and find a way to put them all back with such a good quality result was quite impressive.
Cleanup was unfortunately lacking - my driveway, months later, still has some residue from the chiseled off mortar.  My roof also had a white mortar dust coating for some time.
One other negative, they used aluminum ladders to get onto my roof, and leaned them against my brand new white gutters, which now have scrape marks and dents in two spots.  As soon as I made them aware of my concern, they put protective cloths on their ladders and were very careful, but the damage was already done.  The scheduler/biller was receptive to my concern and gave me a discount so that I could take care of this damage.  I definitely appreciate not being argued with on that front, but I would have preferred to pay full price without the scrapes.
Overall, scheduling was terrible, the work itself was good, but there's room for improvement in being careful around the site, preventing excessive mess, and cleaning up well.

    Archstone Masonry
I purchased a Big Deal to work with Archstone. As a procrastinator, I let the discounted value lapse. When I mentioned it to Jerrod, he didn't hesitate to give me the original deal...very professional. He provided an estimate (which was greater than a competitor's estimate). But, the discount ended up evening things out. He made some additional recommendations and I went with some of them. He estimated 2 days of work.
The work was completed in one day, and looked exceptional. His crew was on time, and after a slow start was still able to complete things ahead of schedule. Jerrod even revised the final invoice to reflect fewer man-hours...very customer-oriented. They cleaned up well. If you are looking for honest, customer-focused stonework; Archstone was great to work with.

    Jorve Roofing
First contacted Jorve in June or July for a quote on roof replacement. The salesman responded promptly and conducted a thorough inspection. He found significant deterioration of the grout in the top portion of the chimney, recommending a rebuild above the roofline. He also recommended increasing the attic insulation while they had access to the roof. He stated that they had approximately a six week backlog and would get us on the list when he received our deposit. Due to delays in arranging our finances, we paid our deposit in early October, at which point the salesman said they were scheduling around Thanksgiving, but fall weather made it impossible to confirm a date.
We heard nothing from Jorve for several weeks, finally calling them shortly after Thanksgiving. Several calls to the Jorve scheduler either went unanswered or resulted in nebulous promises. Finally, on February 19, we got a call that the mason would be there the next day to rebuild the chimney (a little more notice would have made it easier to arrange my schedule). Shortly after the mason started working, the roofing crew showed up unannounced. Neither crew expected the other to be there at the same time! There was no sign of the insulation crew that we expected to be coordinating with the roofing crew.
Both chimney and roofing crews performed excellent work. Everything was completed on one day except for the final flashing work on the chimney that couldn't be completed until the mortar cured and some trim they were missing. The foreman returned on Monday to complete the work. The foreman requested the final payment and when questioned about the insulation, stated that he did not know that we were supposed to be getting insulation, even though it was clearly itemized on the invoice.
Subsequently, we received several calls from Jorve requesting final payment, which we declined to make before the work was completed. After several exchanges with various persons at Jorve, they stated that they were still trying to get the equipment to be able to do insulation work and did not know when they could perform the work. At that point, we suggested removing the insulation from the invoice so that we could make our final payment. They agreed, calling it a "win win" situation (not really a win for us, because we still don't have insulation), but we still have not received the revised invoice...

Masonry Specialist Inc AKA "The Brick Doctor"
After talking with Doc by phone several times it seemed like the job that I purchased the Big Deal for was not exactly the type of job that he could do. I gave a B rather than an A because from his website my job seemed like it was right up his ally but it wasn't so I think the site was not as clear as it could have been.

    Onyx Masonry
Craig was exceptional! He was prompt in responding to my request for a quote, quickly realized my vision and made additional detailed suggestions to further improve on it. The finer details can make all the difference!
It's been 1.5 years since it's been completed and I couldn't be happier...

    Pinnacle Roofing Professionals LLC
Lenny Schwartz (owner) and his team of professionals continue to
provide the type of product and service which has earned them the distinction
of being the very best in the roofing business in the Seattle area!
When I discovered a small roof leak, I turned to Angie?s List. I
went down the list of A-rated companies, and very much liked what I read about
Pinnacle Roofing. I called for an appointment, and within 2-3 days, Lenny was
on my roof and had identified several problem areas. He provided repairs and an
estimate for a new roof, since we both agreed it was in need of replacement.
A few days later, we met again, and he explained in-depth all the technical
details, materials, warranties, etc., and provided a written proposal. Being a
comparison shopper, I then solicited 3-4 additional bids, all from A-rated firms
on Angie?s List. All the bids were professional and reasonable, and some were even
    less expensive.
But, in the final analysis, I just felt that Lenny?s low-key and
personable approach had instilled the type of confidence which I needed in
order to trust a contractor with a very expensive project. Pinnacle Roofing
    Pros definitely exceeded our expectations.
    We continue to receive compliments
    on our beautiful new roof.
