    Black Hills, Inc. Home Services
Prompt, super professional, friendly and courteous, provided detailed answers to my technical questions, and did a detailed job servicing our furnace and heat pump! Black Hills provides superbly excellent and highly professional technicians who provide top rate furnace and heat pump servicing and repairs! Always on time and provide detailed onsite explanations of system status and repairs before undertaken. Front Office communications are excellent and include reminders of upcoming maintenance visits, a call 1-2 days before the visit, and a call 30 minutes before arrival of the technician. Also included is a text with the name and photo of the technician who will be performing the work. I have done business with Black Hills for nearly 10 years between two homes, and I couldn t more strongly recommend Black Hills for all your heating and air conditioning needs.

    Energy Star Systems and Stoves
Everything went extremely well.  I had already gotten estimates from 3 other vendors when an acquaintance who had work done previously by Energy Star talked me into getting an estimate from them before having the work done.
I was impressed right off the bat by Mike's demeanor.  There was no high pressure tactics or bad mouthing of competitors, as others had been guilty of.  He explained what would be involved and how much it would cost.  I mentioned the size of the unit that the others had planned to install.  Mike did some figuring and said that a 2.5 ton unit would work better than the 2 ton unit the others had planned on installing.  His bid included the permit fees and taxes, while the others had only given me estimates that said "Plus taxes and permit costs".  I appreciated that.  Mike's bid was the lowest of the 4, even with the bigger equipment.
The crew showed up promptly on the day scheduled.  They were extremely polite and went out of their way to keep me informed as they did their work.  Before they left they sat down with me and programmed the computer controlled thermostat, made sure that I knew how to make any changes to the programming that I might need to, and that I knew the difference between operating a heat pump and operating a conventional furnace.  While studying up on heat pumps subsequent to the install I found out that many customers throughout the country have been given wrong information about using the "Em" setting on the thermostat.  Apparently the technicians at a lot of companies are unsure of the concept. These guys from Energy Star were right on and explained it to me correctly.
I had been a little apprehensive going into the whole idea of switching to a heat pump but after the install was all done. I am quite happy though I went ahead with it.  I have nothing but good words to say about Mike and the folks at Energy Star and would recommend them highly.

CHEHALIS SHEET METAL HEATING & COOLING & ROOFING
My heat went out in sub-freezing conditions this past winter and I hadn't established a working relationship with a heating repair and maintenance company since I bought this house. I could hear what was happening to the furnace and did a little research because I knew it would be expensive. I called Chehalis Sheet Metal to get an estimate on what I believed the problem to be because I recognized their name and had a fairly good impression of the company. I wanted to find someone to maintain the furnace as well as get me up and running again.
However, Chehalis Sheet Metal would not give me an estimate by phone on what I thought the problem was, even with the caveat that it might not be that and the estimate might not apply. They would not tell me what the major part would cost (and I knew for sure that the part would have to be replaced and that the cost of the part varied by about $200 from one manufacturer to another). They would not put me through to someone who could talk to me about possibilities. They could not send someone out to the house for several days and that estimate would cost $120. I was pretty sure the part would have to be ordered and I would have to wait again between the estimate and the work. The person on the phone did not indicate that the estimate fee would be applied to any service.
Basically, the Chehalis Sheet Metal policies attempt to make it impossible for a person to be a good and careful consumer. They put the consumer in the place of being vulnerable to pressure to upgrade, etc...while the furnace isn't working by making the consumer put out pretty big dollars for an estimate. I went with another company, who talked with me enough over the phone that we both understood the possibilities and that there could be other things going on as well.  They provided a phone estimate (at no charge). They provided great service with an apology that they couldn't get there the same day. This other company, not Chehalis Sheet Metal, will get my future routine maintenance and repair work.

    Americool Heating & AC
I was impressed with how fast Norm was able to show up after my "distress" call. He quickly found a large leak in my system and gave me the bad news. My coil a $1600 part according to him was leaking. Norm called the supplier in tumwater and read him the #'s off my machine. Norm hung up and told me I had a 5yr warranty and I was 2 yrs past it. He could "repair" the leak for $450 with no gurantee of its success over any length of time. My unit was so out of date and inneficient that I should get a new one which he would be happy to install for $3200. I thanked him and he left. I called 3 other companies to get 2nd/3rd and 4th opinions. The highest replacement bid I got was $2500 which included a new coil for my air handler also because the r22 refigerant is not compatible with the new 410a refrigerant(according to all 3 of the other contractors). One of the contractors called tumwater for me and told me the good news..my unit WAS under warranty I had a 10yr not 5yr. Called norm back and asked what was going on witht the warranty issue and his bid being $700 higher than everybody else for less work. He told me the guy in tumwater made a mistake and then lowered his bid $500 saying the other guys are just starving for buisness. All 3 other contractors were also slammed with buisness and came over after 5pm to take a quick look and give me an estimate. I called norms boss the owner of americool. He told me he would talk to norm and get back to me. He never called me back. Norm sent me an e-mail telling me he was not a liar nor a crook and I need to pay the $91 bill I got in the mail. He did do a leak test to see where the leak was. Norm with americool is a liar and tried to rip me off over $700. His boss is doing nothing.
