DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Sandy Sherman was hired to recane 4 dining room chairs, 2 sides and 2 armchairs, unmarked but of excellent Wallace Nutting-like quality that are 100+ years old. They all had brittle and torn caned backs and seats. The original cane was very fine and the holes very small. The backs of all 4 are caned on both the front and back so that the chair is finished from all viewpoints. All caners charge per hole, and Sandy's estimate was based on the number of holes to completely recane all 4 chairs: the seats and both sides of the backs. The original cane on the seat of one of the arm chairs was darkened with age and dry, but not damaged; the cane on the front, back, and seats of the rest of the chairs was severely torn. She agreed to completely recane them to restore them to original condition. She said she was qualified, and I when I viewed her other work, and she appeared to have adequate skills.
