CThe work on the part of the crew, for the most part, was done well. There were some minor mistakes but nothing that didn't "come out in the wash"...
The most challenging part was the invoicing. From the beginning it was problematic. My suggestions for clarity were ignored. When we had to deal with a loan company about half-way through the project we began to get 2 sets of invoices, one for the lender, and one for us. This never made sense and I requested it stop but it did not stop.
In the end, in order to do taxes I had to ask for copies of materials invoices, something I have never had to do with other carpenters. I got them but what a bother!
I never felt comfortable with the business side of the company. Even though the work was good I could not work with them again based on this.
They would be great for someone who isn't as concerned as we have had to be about where the money went.

AI needed to hold heat in my barn's tack room to keep my staff and I from freezing this winter. Jason custom designed a door to fit in over a stairway that could be removed in summer easily and replaced a pointless exterior door with a fabulous new one. E had to widen the opening for it as well. I'm happy to say we all stayed very toasty this season and our savings from not letting the heat out were well worth it!

AFrom the start working with Mike at Joined Builders was great. He called and we discussed the project then he came out and met with us to see the space and learn more about what we wanted. He provided us an estimate which was a little higher than some of the others we received but we decided to go with his team because of the professionalism and recommendations from others.
He gave us a timeline and the team kept to that timeline. They were very nice all the time and kept to a schedule which allowed us to remain living in the house. We would highly recommend Mike and his team to our friends and neighbors.

AProject went very well. services supplied at price quoted with only small additions for specific materials required. Work was done very professionally and clean-up was meticulous. Special attention was paid to finish details so that the new windows and doors were consistent in appearance with the house as a whole.

Abest contractor we've worked with in the last 7 years. Crew was professional, knowledgeable, talented. William checked in regularly to see how the work was going. Everything was completed in a timely manner (a first for us). Just a great builder/contractor for the money.- ALP A.

AThe customer service and customer relations were excellent--all subcontractors were expertly supervised and he kept us informed daily of the work plan for that day. He spent many hours with us planning the work, advising us on our options, giving us examples, catalogs, and sketches, and even went with the homeowners to locate custom details and advise us on price points. Time was important, and we discussed at length how to manage the project in terms of new appliance delivery, material storage, and many other details that helped us make the job go smoothly. The job ran about six working days longer than expected, but it was very complex and there were some surprises because the house is quite old. For such a large project, it went very smoothly and the misery of not having a working kitchen was offset by feeling that we were his partners in getting the project done. Before we approached Dan with this job, we had used him on several smaller projects--a bath remodel, some needed structural work, and a sensitive porch restoration. The bath rehab turned out exceptionally well, and the finish work exceeded our expectations. The two structural projects were completed on time and on budget, despite one of the projects being foundation work done in the Vermont winter. Also, Dan is able to do historic-preservation level carpentry, and he produced a new, structurally sound porch on our historic house that was so closely matched to the original that we joked that we'd spent $9000 to get the exact same thing we started with. Many of the decorative elements--balusters, bracketing, and railings--were custom made by him to exactly match the originals. I would recommend Clar Construction for any job of any size, but especially for projects that have a preservation element and for any older home that may bring some unanticipated events or discoveries. He is also a fine craftsman who takes pride in his work and treats his subcontractors well, so that they stay with him and work harmoniously with clients. He also brings a refined aesthetic sense to the table, and we would often defer to his judgment about design decisions; he understands architectural history and has real respect for older buildings and what those building do to enrich the community.- Helen H.

AOverall experience I would call excellent. There are no don'ts with Mr. Larkin - only do's (i.e. it can be done and done right).
