Bennington Home Repair & Restoration By Tom Medlin
My husband is a handyman extraordinaire.  He finished our basement 14 years ago.  Looks great.  It's the man-cave.  Only problem is that Ken absolutely refused to install a drop ceiling.  He said it's a nightmare to do... he didn't have time... it was too expensive-- every excuse in the book really.  Meanwhile, 14 years go by and the finished basement which was SUPPOSED to be for the kids was still without ceiling-- now the kids are about grown and gone. I finally decided the ceiling had to be installed before Riley got out of high school so he could have his friends over-- in a decent space.  I advertised for help on Craiglist and Tom Medlin from Bennington, Vermont contacted me.  Tom work throughout Southeastern Vermont, including Brattleboro, Marlboro, Wilmington, Dover and nearby area. Tom worked with me via phone and email to get a rough estimate ready.  He then came to the house to look at the space and refine the estimate.  We agreed on a price and schedule.  He's been very thorough and careful with every aspect of the job.  His work ethic is outstanding.  He's honest and hardworking.  He's very detail oriented.  A couple times I said, don't worry about the details, but he insisted on getting the job done right, even though it took longer than he estimated (no extra charges). We've really enjoyed dealing with Tom and highly recommend him for any home repair or restoration projects.  He and his crew are excellent!

    Joe Green Home Solutions Inc
I met the guys from Joe Green at a home show, and talked with them about this uninsulated space under my front door. They came out to look at it. It's a small job and very unpleasant, and they were willing to do it, which not many companies were. It took months before I could have the job done - I had to wait for a utility company audit (to get a rebate), I got other estimates. Charles & Chris were great to communicate with, very prompt in getting back to me throughout. When the job finally got done, Chris was excellent. Very thorough and careful. He did some extra work for me because there was a delay in when they could come. I really enjoyed working with these guys and feel they care a great deal about doing a good job and their relationship with the customer.

    Efficiency Vermont
It's a great, great company. It's a non-profit. They're not a company. What they do is try to get everybody in the state to burn less fossil fuels and get the new type of light bulbs and all that stuff. They're having centers to encourage people to go in that direction. They have this deal with the electric company that I have called Green Mountain Power. What the deal was is that they, if you go ahead and have your house insulated, they pay for some of that and then you pay for the rest. So I decided to have this audit done. They don't do the audit themselves, but they have people that they recommend, different companies that they recommend. So I interviewed a couple of companies and picked out one guy to come and audit it. He did this whole big report and everything. He said, "Well, to get the biggest bang for the buck what you should do is insulate your attic better and your basement. You get the most payback from that. If you did that it would work out financially after about five years." In other words, the money I would put into it, I would begin saving because of reduced energy cost. After about five years, I would have saved enough that would pay for the money I laid out. There was a charge but I get reimbursed. Let's say that the whole thing cost $4000. If I went through with thing and had my house insulated, it would cost $4000. I would have to pay $2000 and they would subsidize it by another $2000 and that would take care of it. So over the course of five years, the $2000 that I laid out, I would have realized that in power savings. They're great. I would tell friends to check them out. It's a no-brainer. How can you lose on this?

    SERVPRO of Cheshire County
Very professional.  Put up plastic to contain dust, told us about each step, were coming late one day, called to say they would be late. Cleaned up every day and really cleaned up on final day. Would highly recomend them.

Saw their ad in the Keene Shopper News and called. Very pleasant receptionist. Set up an appt and meanwhile called a knowledgeable friend to ask if he knew of the company. He said he had used them with his own house and thought they were great to deal with and their insulation made a major difference in his heating. He also said that CGP was not as expensive as competitors in the region. Chris, the owner, arrived on  time, surveyed the building, gave me an estimate on the spot and because I trusted the recommendation of my friend, I gave him a down payment and we scheduled the job.  The crew (two men) showed up on time and were very polite. They went to work and got the job done fairly quickly with no mess left behind. I signed off and gave them a check for the balance. After I get through the coming heating season, I plan to have them back to do more insulation on the house.

They did an excellent job. They were thorough. They  had a good plan for keeping moisture out of the home. It has been holding up well. We have been very pleased with the work they performed. I would recommend their services to anyone.

It was the first time I had used them. It went phenomenal. I've saved 500 gallons of oil in the 2010-2011 heating season. I couldn't believe the improvement. I would definitely use them again. It was a messy job but they cleaned up very well.

The project went way above budget and took far longer than expected.  The scope kept expanding as they would find new things that were "non-negotiables" and had to be taken care of.  Colonial Construction was not good about providing us updated estimates.  We never got an itemization of just what all the costs were applied to.  We finally put our feet down and asked that a budget be adhered to and worked out a final payment to cover a specific set of tasks. The project got near to completion when Colonial pulled out and walked off the job, demanding we pay more or they wouldn't come back.  We told him not to bother, which was when we got an itemized bill for work that he said we still owed money on - some of which was never completed!  When we saw the prices charged for certain tasks - $900 to put up a vinyl tub surround that he had used the wrong adhesive for, for example, we realised that we had been had.  In addition, there was an entire punch list that we had paid for, for work which was not completed.  Some of the items he claimed we owed on had already been paid for. Neighbours later told us that his workers hadn't been at the site every day like they claimed (and like we were charged).    Luckily it only cost us about $400 to take care of unfinished items (which Colonial was fixing to charge about $2,000 for). I'd say that he's fine with the insulation (which is hardly rocket science), he talks a good game, but the man's a charlatan.  Look at the houses on his website and ask where they are. He did threaten legal action against us, but our own counsel advised us that he had no legs to stand on and that it was an intimidation tactic.  It's been almost two years since we heard from him last, so that must have been the case.

DOUG COLBY / COLBY ROOFING / AIRTIGHT
We are dismayed with his unprofessional conduct. Doug did not spray in the thickness we contracted him for. The application was irregular and there were multiple gaps. He claimed to be done; We asked him to come back and finish. After over a week of no-shows, evasive answers and unreturned phone calls, he did come back and fill in some of the gaps, but many remain. He now says he can't fill in the inch or two left without going on too thick, and he doesn't want to have to shave it down, so he won't finish the job. He refuses to come back. Unfortunately we already paid him in full. He is not responsive to pressure from our general contractor (who had no previous experience with him). In general, he has been unresponsive, not returning phone calls and not showing up when he says he will. The day he was supposed to do the actual job, he did not show up and didn't call; he didn't return our calls. He then showed up IN THE EVENING, and started to do a rush job. The day he did some touch-up, he showed up IN THE EVENING the day AFTER he said he'd be there. We can't sheetrock until this is resolved - this debacle is prolonging the chaos of living in a renovation site.
