Roofing reviews in Barre

VERY WELL!! We were very happy with how quickly the owner came to our house after we made the initial call (within a week, I believe it might have been a few days) and inspected our roof thoroughly to give an honest opinion what should be done, why, how and explained the process. Gave us a few samples of different colors along with a complete sheet of other colors we might want to consider. Sent us an email with the contract to review the next day for us to pick a color and sign the contract. They were at our house to start work 16 days from us signing the contract and emailing it back to them. They were good about returning our calls when we called them to see what their ETA would be for the start of the project. I was very pleased at how quickly they were able to fit us into the schedule. Their work at our house was 3 full days to completion. It looks great.

He did a great job, he was reasonable. We were very happy with the roofing job we had; it was asphalt shingles. He probably does other types of roofing. Roofing is what he does primarily.  He's kind of a one or two man show. He's probably not a commercial roofer but, residential.  He may be listed under residential.

He had a lot of integrity. He's very straight forward. He explained everything that he was going to and why. He's just a good communicator.

They were very professional, courteous, and did an excellent job.  They finished the work within two days and we didn't have any issues with the roof. The home was destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2011.

I should have known when he showed up that this was going to be a disaster as his truck leaked oil all over my driveway when he came for the estimate and my dog who loves everyone barked at him.  We eventually signed a contract and gave a deposit of $2500.  They started work on a Friday, and did not cover the roof in any way.  They did not return the following day.  Rain was predicted a week prior.  They apparently do not have access to the news, the internet or a pair of eyes as the clouds rolled in.

The predicted torrential downpours happened, and it rained through our drywall, ruining a good portion of our bathroom and electrical devices in the bathroom.  He did not answer his phone.  So we went to his house at 6:30AM.  We were greeted by a man looking like he had been drinking heavily all night.  He hopped right in his truck and came up, sticking wads of felt in the holes in the roof.  Predictably this did not help at all, so we went back to his house to demand he do something else.  Finally he sent two of his workers with 3 ancient tarps filled with holes, and they nailed these to the roof.

I called my insurance company and they sent out a remediation crew to start working on it.  The next morning I called Mr. Smith and he stated that, despite his website, contract and card he did not actually carry liability insurance.  "I've had a lapse in insurance" he said.  My eminently reasonable response was "what the f*** were you thinking?"  He then dodged my further calls, so I drafted a letter terminating the contract for cause and demanded my deposit back.  He did not respond.

Finally I called him with caller ID blocked, he answered within two rings, and asked if he had received it.  He stated he had.  He then stated that he had no money, and that he was working on another job and might be able to pay me next week.  I informed him that in Vermont deposits are supposed to be held in trust and that they need to be available for return, and that he was in violation of this law.  He said "I don't know about that" and hung up.  I called him back and informed him that I am impounding his tools until he returns our deposit.  And this is where it stands, with my homeowners insurance looming over him ominously to recoup their expenses and me getting extremely agitated.  I bet you will too if you use this company.

Update: The attorney general is now suing him for home improvement fraud.

He was reluctant to actually return calls and only gave a verbal estimate to my property manager. I actually wanted to hire him to do this big job but he doesn't return calls, doesn't do email, wants cash payment the day the job is finished - doesn't accept credit cards, bank transfers, or checks by mail. I chased the quote for over a month before giving the job to his competitors.

The job went very well. He took the old roof off and and saved the old edging which saved me money. He miscalculated the amount of material he needed and offered to cut the difference in half. The pieces were just slightly shorter than the roof, so he came up with a creative way to fix it. The roof came out great and went through this tough winter. I would use his services again in a heart beat. And the best, he cleaned up every spec of construction material that was laying on the ground.

They came right away when I contacted them for an estimate, gave me a written estimate. After I chose them they gave me an estimate of when they would be available for the work. I signed the contract in June, the work was performed in August. It took 2 days to do the whole roof, including the attached garage. I found very few roofing nails left over after they had left. They cleaned up all the old roofing material. Just a slight amount of damage to some shrubs that i have next to the house where the old roofing material was dropped to the ground. Did not take some of my suggestions on the work to perform but explained to me why they differed with me and it was always to make sure that the roof performed better.

The work was done excellently. Friends in another state refused to believe me when I said no plants were injured - important to me - and there was no mess. They were careful, and cleaned as they went. And the work looks great! The only issue we faced was that like painting, roofing is weather dependant. Patience is required. But when they got to our house, they were quick, and very professional.

Mr. Bryan did not perform the work in the time agreed to in the contract.  The tasks were NOT performed in a workmanlike manner.  Several tasks were not completed at all.  When we asked Mr. Bryan to return to correct the poor quality workmanship and finish the job, he demanded additional payment.  We have already paid him more than double the original contract price.  He gave a verbal quote for additional work, to which we agreed and for which he was paid, but he did not perform key components of this work and some of it is of very poor quality.
It is our opinion that Mr. Bryan takes no pride in the quality of his work.  It is our opinion that once Mr. Bryan receives full payment, he has no interest in completing the job.
We now have to hire another contractor to fix his failures because he refuses to do so without additional payment.
In addition, we have been informed that Mr. Bryan has had to settle at least two complaints of home improvement fraud, brought by people who paid substantial deposits and received no work for months.

He came back just a few days later and did a permanent repair by replacing all of the missing roof, and he re secured the remaining roof so that would not blow off either. He was prompt, Professional and very polite with a good deal of chrisma that made it a very pleasant visit. And he was the only one out of four roofers that I called who responded. I would definitely recommend him to any one of my neighbors.
