Hardwood Flooring reviews in Yorktown

    Adams Hardwood Flooring
We used Angie's list to select Adams Hardwood Flooring and reviewed the company's website.  Unfortunately, that was all
of the research we did.  I had seen a few concerning reviews on Angie?s list, but most were good, so I discounted the bad reviews.  I also put far too much weight on the Adams Hardwood Flooring website.  My wife and I really like Doug Adams, he is very personable and we want the best for and from him.  However, the work quality was quite disappointing and, quite frankly, poor (not only our opinion).  Others with limited flooring experience as well as numerous skilled contracting professionals have questioned the finished product they've seen firsthand at our home.  They actually want to know who did the work so that they are sure that they do not use the same contractor.  The workmanship is considerably different that what is represented on the Adams Hardwood Flooring website.  As a business owner, Doug has to improve the quality of his work and his decision
making.  There were numerous poor decisions made by Doug.
    Some of the poor decisions:
    (1)  Poor decision by Doug to go ahead and completely install obviously improperly milled flooring (very inconsistent widths) across the entire master bedroom when issues were brought to his attention by his own staff after only a few feet of flooring
width had been installed.  He also made a poor decision not to bring the issue to my wife?s attention even though she was
home at the time.  Ultimately upon our insistence, a representative from the flooring supplier came out and, upon seeing the enormous gaps in the flooring, gave approval to tear up and replace the entire master bedroom floor.  Doug had previously pressed us to just move forward with what we had and suggested in an e-mail to me that we fill the numerous and significant gaps with putty, ?I think that if we take the main eye swore up by the bedroom door and fill the rest it will look great when we sand and finish.?  The recommendation was completely inconsistent with what is represented on the company?s website.
    (2)  Poor decisions to face nail both in the hallway and in the master bedroom in high traffic areas (not just in limited space areas next to walls) which has created numerous problems.
    (3)  Poor decision on the color of the putty used to fill holes in the face nailing which did not match the cumaru wood.  Doug came back to replace it and now there is a different sheen to the flooring in each of the places he tried to fix it (shiny striped areas).  That same putty fills many other gaps in the floor and is very obvious- it has also dried out and has deteriorated in numerous places.  We have lots of gaps that are 1/32? ? 1/16? throughout the new flooring.  There are more boards with gaps than there are tight fitting.
    (4) Doug touted the Loba Hybrid water based product as being better than traditional oil based finish and I trusted him.  It certainly did not work well with the darker cumaru flooring.  Almost anything marks/scuffs the floor, our vacuum cleaner wheels scuff the floor.  We also have edges of side-by-side boards that are not the same height.  We catch our sock feet on the edges of the boards.  (5)  Unbelievably poor decision to install a board with a 6 ¾? split in the end of it right in the middle of the master bedroom floor - he filled the split with putty!
    (6)  While Doug?s intent to align the boards in the master bedroom with the hallway was good, the method utilized was poor judgment.  Rather than sacrificing some of the boards to align the flooring in the master bedroom with the hallway, he face nailed them and left them installed.  He should have nailed boards aligning with the hall, worked his way from those to the wall and then pulled up and discarded the first boards he face nailed.  The flooring would have been aligned and no boards would have had to have been face nailed.  That decision has created significant 1/8? gaps (you can see the plywood sub-floor) and caused the putty/shiny stripe issues.
    (7)  Also, other contractors have questioned why he did not just extend the flooring from the hallway into the bedroom instead of installing a threshold in the doorway of the bedroom.  The result would have flowed better and probably looked better.  (8)  Doug?s extremely poor decision not to address these issues has led to us finally taking the time to put this review online.  We have been trying to get the current issues addressed since late last June.   We consider his lack of responsiveness very unprofessional.  Doug gave us a warranty, but it is obviously of little value since we cannot get him to come back.  I am seriously considering just paying to have someone else fix the work as best as possible.
Even with the oak floors downstairs he refinished, we can see swirls in some places and there are a few areas that are not so smooth.  We also have the issue with raised edges of boards that catch our sock feet.
A very nice guy, but we are not at all pleased with the quality of his work or his lack of responsiveness.  Too bad we cannot attach photos, those would tell the story/you could see for yourself.
Price is a "D" because of the quality of the work and it is looking more and more as if I will have to pay someone else to fix what can be fixed.
Quality is an "F" for the reasons stated above
Responsiveness is an "F" for the reasons stated above (I called Doug again early today, no return phone call)
Punctuality is a "B"; when he says he will show, he typically does, but has been late.
Professionalism is a tough one.  Very nice, very personable.  However, not responding to e-mails and voice mail messages is unacceptable.  Should probably rate as a "D" or "F", but generously giving him a "C" just because we do like Doug.

    Athens Custom Flooring,Inc.
Very responsive company and professional but their quality was poor. They pre-cut the planks to a series of the same length and layed them so that a clear pattern formed on the floor. Quick and efficient for them but that is exactly how it looked - quickly done. Not professional. They also layed it with the surface too uneven even though I asked them to level it if needed. I had them pull up the flooring twice during the process. Once to fix the pattern and later again to lay down leveling compound because things were bouncing around when you walked by in 2 rooms. The result was them is still in the middle of laying the floor and rushing to finish while my movers were carrying in furniture and boxes and thus sloppy finishing caulk and trim work.

Now our floor scratches easily. We have had to use a wood stain pen to cover up scratches. That was one of the big selling points was that it was durable and would not show wear and tear.  Now it is scratched, chipped and dented. When they sent their crew out to do the installation, they sub-contracted. The installation was a nightmare. They did not level the floor underneath like you would with a normal hardwood floor. We could step on a part of the floor and the other end would come up. It was uneven and was not sitting right. My husband was trying to work with the guy and he said that this installation process was normal. They were also laying down a pattern and he said this is how they install it as well. We then had to get the supervisor out. They finally did do the leveling, which we had to pay for. We were sold on this product, saying we would get one thing, but we did not. We were not told any of this inside of the store that we had to get leveling done ourselves. Also, some transition pieces did not fit right either. They did try to work with us with leveling the floor though, but we would not use them again.

    Total Home Improvements
    The short version:
All THI services exceeded our expectations completely!  The quality of the work was outstanding and we are completely satisfied with the results and would highly recommend Total Home Improvement to anyone needing home improvement services.
    The long version:
We became acquainted with THI at the Hampton Home and Garden Show and spent some time talking with them at their booth.  As a result of this conversation we decided to ask for an estimate of the work that we needed performed on our home.
Joe Chiapetta was the Design/Sales Consultant who met with us to determine what we wanted and to provide an estimate of the services.  He was simply fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable.  We had a basic idea of what we wanted to do with the room that we wanted finished and he helped us understand what could be done and at what cost.  He made several suggestions that were right on and contributed to the overall superb finished result.  He also gave us estimates for the other work we wanted and reasonable alternatives with their associated costs.  We felt that all the estimates were very reasonable and were very comfortable with Joe and so we asked TMI to perform all the work we needed.
The work was started with a "walk thru" with Joe, our Project Manager Kenny Brown and Supervisor Greg Rankin.  The purpose of the walk thru was to meet the Project Manager and Supervisor and to communicate the plan and ensure that everyone was on the same page.  Everyone was incredibly personable and articulate about the job.   I was given a timeline for the work.  I cannot say enough good things about this THI crew.  They are highly professional and skilled at what they do.  And they are incredibly nice guys.
As is often the case with home improvement projects as the work progressed we came up with other "projects" that we wanted done.  THI was incredibly accommodating and added the jobs to the project and accomplished them within the original timeframe.
During the project when I was around I peppered Greg with questions about various topics on home maintenance.  It became obvious to me very quickly that Greg has a great wealth of experience in all aspects of home improvement/repair.  He was happy to take the time to educate me on a variety of topics and even taught me a great technique for patching holes in drywall.  To demonstrate the technique he patched a couple of holes in my garage that weren't even on the work list.  It is obvious he enjoys his work and teaching and is incredibly good at it.
We were totally satisfied with the finished result which was outstanding.  The exterior of the house looks fantastic and the painters did a superb job.  Being on the water the elements had played havoc with the exterior wood of our house so there was a lot of prep work to be done before painting.  The painters ensured that the wood was properly prepped/sanded/primed before the final coats of paint were applied and believe me that was no small undertaking.  The prep itself took several days.  The painters were simply fantastic and the final result was reflective of their skill and hard work.  We were totally satisfied with the result which exceeded our expectations.
The room that was finished over the garage turned out better than we could have ever expected.  The room's shape provided a challenge in finishing but the final result made it the most appealing room in our home.  Joe was right on in his recommendations and we are likewise totally satisfied with the results.
We felt very comfortable with everyone who came to work on our home from the insulators, the drywall installers, the electricians, the cabinet installers, the painters, and of course the supervisors (Joe/Kenny/Greg).  The supervisors kept in close communication with us and ensured that we were happy with the work at each step of the project.  The entire Total Home Improvement Team was highly professional and personable.
In summary, we had a rather large and varied home improvement project that Total Home Improvement performed in an exemplary and cost effective manner.  The final result was simply fantastic.  We are totally satisfied and highly recommend Total Home Improvement to anyone needing work performed on their homes.

    Yorktown Hardwood Floors
The bid was the middle of 3 received,
$3,34.00 to install, sand, stain and finish with 3 coats of poly new floors to replace carpet (418 sq. ft. of red oak hardwood) including  shoe mold to match for $227.50.
$2744 to refinish water damaged floors  of red oak hardwood with 270 ft. shoe mold  for $472.50 .
The only price more than we were willing to pay was what would have been charged for moving the furniture out and replacing it when the job was completed ($872.00), Being too cheap to pay someone for what we could do ourselves, we wanted to save the money. The total job was $7938.
The gentlemen who performed the job were professional, spotlessly clean, intelligent and mannerly. The job was done in a timely manner and they were willing to do whatever necessary to be sure we were pleased. They custom mixed a stain that turned out beautifully. They have my highest recommendation! It's wonderful to encounter people who take such pride in their work!

Overall experience is excellent. From start to finish Athens crews conducted themselves in a very professional way. Starting with Carlos, he did the measurements and explained all the installation process as well as the installation warranty. I was very impressed in his professionalism. Shaushana and Anna were very responsive, helpful, and patient when answering all our questions and concerns.
During installation, Hugo and his crew were punctual, responsive and show good professionalism. We did have a little misunderstanding during installation. We live in the townhouse community, and we would like to ensure that during the construction that the noise that were generated due to construction would not disturb other neighbors. So we asked that they worked between 9am to 5:30pm. One time that the crew work passed that 5:30pm because they thought they could finish up; however it ended up longer than they were expected. When I came to the house around 6:30pm, I was surprise that they still working. However, after I explain to Hugo the reason why I limited the work only to 5:30pm, he understood and apologized for the misunderstanding. We never had any incident after that.
Juan did the installation of the stairs, railing and balusters. He did a great job with them. We have two little boys, and the previous balusters installation were done in a rush and were not sturdy enough. Juan installed the balusters, so they are strongly attached to the railing and the base. I feel safer with the way they were installed.
Finally, the crew did a good job cleaning up their work area. We performed the final walkthrough with Carlos, and we noticed little damage on the wall. He said that he would come back to fixed the damage. Like I said earlier, I was very impressed with the way Athens personnel conducted their business. I highly recommend their services.

Everything went smooth as silk from the beginning dealing with Anna, to Dennis doing the initial measuring and right through to the end of the job with Carlos and his entire crew.
Athens showed up on time.  Carlos (the owner) explained the process, moisture readings, taking up the vinyl, installing the bamboo, etc.  His crew walked in the door and immediately got to work.  Everyone seemed to have specific jobs and there was no confusion or dilly dallying.  I was amazed at the care they took not to mark or scuff the newly painted walls!
When the work was completed, the men cleaned up everything and hand wiped/polished the floors.
Great company, great crew, very well managed!  The floors lookfantastic!
And yes, I will absolutely use Athens Custom Flooring again for other jobs.

I wouldn't use them again. The price was competitive with everybody else I talk to. Everyone loved them on Angie's list I don't know whether he just didn't like us, but his installation I thought was just adequate. We did put in the quarter round and we talked about panning and everything and we had to pull some of the quarter round off and which he tore up in the process of taking it off and then it was just pretty ripped up and he just put it right back on. He didn't do anything else to fix that and I was gone and I wouldn't able to address that. He was horrible and he did a crappy job.

John was recommended to us by another family in the neighborhood because of how impressed with his service. He was prompt in returning phone calls and came out the same day to provide us an estimate. He shared his expertise with us but never pressured us in any way. We were trying to get the floors done before moving in to the house. John and his partner worked to get us in as soon as they could. They did an amazing job! They completed the entire project in 4 days. The painters that were working on our home as well said that John and his partner were the best team that they had ever worked on the same project with.
