The experience was great! I got exactly what I wanted and the quality of the materials for the price was much better than expected. Everyone associated with the project; owner, office staff, project manager, subcontractors, and Colony crew members were extremely polite, patient, and knowledgeable. They kept my anxiety level low and provided regular status updates. I will definitely hire them again for my next big project!

After joining Angie's List, I received sub bids on Concrete and Siding work from CCHI and their prices for both were competitive with individual subs who were also Angie's List participants. The Siding was particularly important as we wanted
to use a high end CertainTeed product and CCHI represented themselves as being skilled installers and certified by Certain- Teed. More on this later. I met with the firm and they expressed an interest in the entire scope of work necessary to complete construction. They proceeded to solicit bids while doing remedial work necessary due to the modules being set improperly by the original contractor. At this point, things were going OK. Work progressed but, CCHI was obviously loosing the schedule as trades necessary for a timely completion had not been scheduled and it some cases prices had not been solicited. The work was not progressing as originally agreed. We ended up with multiple trades working on top of each other which typically results in sloppy work and that was what was delivered to us.
Regrettably, things changed drastically once the finish work was started. CCHI used their employees for the installation of cabinet hardware and their efforts were not acceptable. Cabinet doors and drawers were improperly drilled and hardware was installed both out of plumb and level. It was a terrible installation. The same was true for the installation of toilet and bath accessories. Multiple trips were made by CCHI to correct the conditions described but they never could get it right. The Painter selected was inept. He painted walls the wrong color and touched up areas using a flat sheen on walls that had been painted with semi-gloss. Paint was on new appliances, counter tops and finish floors which included hardwood and high end tile at the Baths and Laundry Room. Thresholds had not been properly installed at any of the exterior or interior doors.  CCHI, once again, required multiple trips to correct the same. To this day the the thresholds from hardwood to tile have not been correctly installed as tile is buckling where it butts the threshold. We have decided to have someone else other than CCHI address the same due to the numerous trips to correct past mistakes. What we were observing during this time was a vast disparity between CCHI's personnel skill levels and their billable rates which are high industry wise. We do not believe that they were as skilled as their claims and Supervision by CCHI was non existent.
Back to the Siding: CCHI, my Certified Installer of CertainTeed Siding, did not use their personnel to install the siding. Instead they used another firm and charged us 20% more to use them. The siding used is designed to withstand winds greatly exceeding 100 mph. We have not seen that yet but, I have had (2) pieces of siding fall off of the wall. It had never been fastened.
The selected siding contractor also elected to cover 1/2 of each of our foundation vents with siding, thus greatly reducing the air flow in the crawl space. CCHI accepted the work and it was I who had to tell them to cut back the areas around the foundation vents as there was a terrible moisture problem developing in the crawl space. The system that CCHI had recommended, sealed poly vapor barrier with R-19 batt insulation, had failed due to the lack of adequate air flow. The insulation was soaking wet and sagging throughout. When I crawled through the space the insulation was so water laden, that you felt that you were experincing a light rain shower.
As CCHI claims no responsibility for the problem, but instead sent us an invoice in excess of $592 for removing and hauling away the wet insulation.  I am now preparing to address the mold remediation and re-insulate the space.  I will also be filing a report with the DPOR which regulates Contractors in the State of Virginia.
To my neighbors on Band of Neighbors all I will say is check and re-check credentials of any and all builders to whom you are  considering contracted services! Buyer Beware!

    Stephens Remodeling

I met Lloyd Stephens at one of the home shows in Hampton.  I was very impressed with his knowledge and his willingness to work with me on this project.  He came through with a very competitive bid for the job.  I only wanted him to do the shell of the garage and then I was going to complete the rest of the work myself.  He was very willing to accommodate me on this.  We went through a series of designs to arrive at that one that I wanted and fit my yard.  We had to downsize it from my first plan since it was too large.  He provided all of the drawings and information that I needed for our homeowners association.  Once this was approved, he was able to start work.  We hit one of those rain spells in the summer just as he was starting with the foundation, and it took a bit longer since he had to keep pumping out the water. The construction of the garage went very quickly.  We used a truss construction so that there was more room upstairs.  This installation was impressive to watch, since he brought in a crane to move them into place.  The whole garage was wrapped up and weather tight in time for Hurricane Irene to come through and give it a test.  It came through with flying colors. There was very good attention to detail.  Lloyd was very strict in making sure that everything met or exceeded code requirements.  Walls are straight and plumb; windows and doors are very high quality; there is good workmanship throughout the building.  It is sad that it is only a garage ... actually my workshop. Lloyd is a pleasure to work with.  He is continually available on his cell phone or e-mail.  It was often that we would have conversations at 9 pm at night to work out details.  He was on site on a very regular basis; often doing some of the work himself.  The crews that work for him were very good.  They kept the jobsite neat and cleaned up each day. There was an issue with the concrete driveway pouring.  We have the exposed aggregate in our development.  Lloyd poured the extension one time, and that night as I am driving home he called me and told me it was not up to his standards and it had to be torn out.  I was disappointed about the extra week that this took, but pleased that there never was an argument with him on the quality of the work.  The slab was busted out, hauled away, and then completely repoured.  It looks great now. I cannot wait for the rest of the work to be competed.  Although Lloyd offered and quoted to do all of the work to compete it, I have decided to finish it myself.  I just need to put in the electrical, HVAC, insulation and drywall and it will be complete.  I was very pleased with the work that Lloyd Stevens Builder did and I would happily recommend him and use him for any future projects that I have.

Contractor was a true craftsman and did beautiful work, used good subcontractors and kept control of them. He stayed on budget and all change orders were discussed and approved before being executed.

    Joe Mendel Builders
Joe was wonderful!  Did what he said he was going to do when he said he would do it at a reasonable price.   Could trust his to come into my home without me there. Even gave him a key so I didn't have to take off from work.  Joe has done work for me for the last 10 years and I have never had a disagreement.

Gave no estimate, provided no paperwork. When work was done I was told the price and paid. He had some good ideas and work that he did complete seems to hold up well. However, he was supposed to return to complete detail work but I never heard from him. When I eventually called he said he would "probably be there on Friday." He never showed.
