    Prouty's Chimney Sweep Inc
They showed up on time, gave an accurate estimate and completed the work within the day. We had another seldom-used fireplace and chimney I asked them to check, and they confirmed it required no service. They were very friendly and explained everything in good detail. I'm very happy with the work they did and would recommend them for any chimney cleaning or service needs.

    Potomac Services
They were great. Came on time and performed the services quickly and with no mess or hassle. They were able to tell us of the pros and cons of our chimney, when service will be needed again and when repairs will probably be needed in the future. Very knowledgeable and very friendly.
They came on the morning of New Year's Eve when I thought everyone would be unavailable. I give them the highest recommendations!

    Bottom line: Strongly recommend.
Maud Krulla was very friendly and informative when I called her and had firewood delivered to my home later in the same day, which happened to be a Saturday. I was worried I needed to have someone home for the delivery since I was afraid my driveway would be too small for the entire load and that some firewood would spill into the street. She said not to worry; her delivery guy would clean-up any spillage.
The firewood quality is excellent: clean and dry. I purchased a half-cord but can?t speak to the cost ($335) since I didn?t have time to comparison shop. I went with Maud strictly because of her high rating on Angie's List and my urgent need for firewood.
A half-cord of firewood is defined as 64 cubic feet of compactly stacked wood. When I stacked the delivery on my porch, it came in at 60.75 cubic feet, which is within about 5%. That was close enough for me.

I can not say enough about Greg Prouty and his team's professionalism. Really. I first met Greg early this summer  when my husband and I were looking to buy a period house in the historical town of Waterford, Virginia. I had asked Greg to comment on a fixer-upper house we were considering. He came by the house at a time we suggested, inspected the three fireplaces and gave me suggestions; all for free. We did not buy that house, but had Greg come out again, in late November, for free and inspect the house we did buy.

We asked him to advise us if we could have a wood burning stove in our 1790 walk in fireplace and give us an estimate for installing the favored model: a red Vermont Casting Defiant wood burning stove. Greg and his colleague inspected the chimney (and the other three in the house) and after consultation, advised us that our stove would work in our old fireplace with modifications, and that he and his team could install it for approximately $1700. (This estimate was comparable to another estimate I received by Rusty of Rusty's Fireplace.)

Greg and I corresponded by email while awaiting the stove's arrival during which time Greg reminded me of the certain parts required for the installation. The stove arrived. Greg and his team showed up on time this last Saturday, covered my oriental rug with a protective cloth, and proceeded to install the stove. He took extra care with all the red enameled parts and in measuring the stove for placement in  the exact middle of the fireplace. Once installed, he showed my husband and I how to burn the first 'break-in' fires. He also replaced a cap on one of our other chimneys without extra cost.  We have used the stove for three nights now and all is working beautifully. Thank you Greg! Excellent work. (We have photos of the process if anyone wants to see them.)

We couldn't be more pleased. They took care to wear booties so as to not soil the carpet, moved furniture out of the way, put down drop cloths and used what we consider to be superior equipment. It was much quieter than we have noticed with past contractors and it was not smelly at all -- also an improvement from what other chimney sweeps stirred up in the past.

We called this company after a bad experience with another one. These guys were professional, HONEST and very resonably priced. They did their job the way it supposed to be done. Will definitely use them again.

They were neat, methodical, friendly, thorough. They took care in their work and answered many questions.  Our chimney required a 60 foot ladder which they did not have.  They were able to clean the chimney through our fireplace opening, which btw has a pellet stove insert. This was no easy task.   They recommended  fireproof insullation around the dampler in the fireplace to keep the heat in our house. We had them take care of this a couple of days later.  I highly recommend this company for good service.

    Sixpenny Chimney Sweeps
We were very disappointed because we were given a report that we were skeptical of. We moved to our new house and the previous owner had taken very good care of his fireplace. The guy who came to look at it told me that the chimney was in the worst possible state, and that he had a video of the inside to show. I asked him to email it to my husband and me, but he never did. He also gave us a ridiculous estimate of $2000 (that included the fixing of a cement crack, that according to him, was detrimental, to our chimney). We decided to get a second estimate and had a different provider come over. We did not mention anything about the estimate given to us. The new guy told us the chimney needed a cleaning ($175), and that there was a little crack up there that we should keep an eye on, and that if in a year or two, it gets bigger, we might want to consider fixing it.

    Walker and Clarke Builders Inc
The job went very smoothly, and was completed in a reasonable timeframe, which was always communicted to us during the job. Walker and Clarke performed a remarkable, unexpected remodeling of our master bath. The bath had a jacuzzi tub that had leaked and needed to be removed. It was our intention to simply replace the tub with a clawfoot tub. However, it required finishing the floor to match the rest of the bathroom, and the tile was not easy to find. Once we learned that the tile could not be found, it was then going to be necessary to pull up all the existing tile and replace the entire floor, which became a huge job due to the complex way the original tile had been laid. The job became a total remodeling effort because each thing that needed to be done affected another. Walker and Clarke came in and assessed the entire situation, coordinated the design modifications, advised what the priorities needed to be, and made it all happen. The subcontractors were all efficient, skilled, punctual, and pleasant. A large part of the job had to be completed when I was out of town and it all went very well. While on site Walker and Clarke also performed inspections of our fireplaces, found serious issues, and resolved them. At our request, they designed and built a beautiful brick wall behind our woodstove which then required creating new crown moulding that perfectly matches the original. The costs of the jobs were very reasonable given the complexitiy and evolution of what needed to be done.
