AAppalachian Building ConceptsThe overall experience was excellent. Mike came over within a few days of initial call to scope out work. Initially I was inquiring about deck work but while he was there, we started talking about sheds and he offered solutions to accommodate my sloping terrain. I was also interested in using space below the elevated deck but rain was deterrent. He told me about dry snap and success he had on prior job. I asked him to quote on deck work and shed. Overall I was very pleased with his professionalism and ideas to help me out. I got quotes within a day, I was good with cost and signed contract. Mother Nature caused some delay in start date, he kept me informed. Once prior job done and revised date established, came when he said he would and completed work in time specified. We did run into some snags but Mike and Lou had ideas to fix and fair cost adjustment. They were very friendly and always had good ideas to offer. Their workmanship was superior. Extra crew was brought on depending on work being done and they were all very diligent and friendly. They kept the work site very neat and clean. Mike said that he and Lou would be there every day for full time of the job and they were. I have to say that my deck looks great, is robust and way safer than before. The dry snap looks like a finished ceiling and will give me the usable space I wanted. The shed they built on site was exactly what I envisioned. It was built on post/ pier foundation. Again the quality and workmanship is excellent. It was their Ridgewood version. I would not hesitate to hire Mike and Lou do more work for me in the future.- Deb B.

ADollman Construction, IncI STRONGLY recommend Dollman Construction without hesitation. I have used Dollman Construction on 3 separate occassions and each time their finished product and high quality workmanship exceeded my expectations. Project #1: 900 sq foot free standing Workshop. Dollman studied the architect's plans; made several very positive recommendations; and completed the workshop sooner than expected and well within budget. Project #2: 15 x 6 deck. Dollman designed and built the deck while overcoming the obstacle of making it "zero threshold" at the door way while matching up the far end of the deck with the back patio which was slightly higher elevation. The finished deck has a very, very slight slope which can not be seen nor felt. Project #3: Removed original exterior structural beams with solid cedar beams in the rear of home. Jimmy Dollman measured, designed layout of beams and purchased the solid cedar beams after researching a number of sources. The Dollman Construction Team completed the project within 10 days and the final result is beautiful work of craftsmanship and art. With each of the above projects they were faced with complex construction challenges to which they easily developed solutions which were incorporated into the final product. I appreciated Jimmy's honest and straight-forward communication style. Jimmy always listened to my visions and expectations for each of the above projects. I am extremely happy with the work provided by Dollman Construction and will have them back to my home in a heartbeat to tackle the next home project!- David S.

AChad Smith Builder IncMr. Smith was very professional, honest, and punctual. He wanted to perform the job but advised that due to the distance of the building site to his normal area of business he did not feel he could be competitive with my project. Based on my conversations with this builder I sensed that he was a very knowledgeable and skilled builder. I felt that he took great pride in his work. I was disappointed that he would not be involved in my building project.- David K.

ARG Grimes ConstructionI've used him for 3 or 4 years. He is a general contractor. I have probably spent $50,000 with him and I have probably referred another $200,000 to him. He is fabulous and he gets an A on my list. He has been in business for about 5 years and he went out on his own. It is a long waiting list for him, which is unusual in the construction business.- Rita F.

AShelter Alternatives, Inc.We discussed specifics but I thought they're a little high on the price. We're still considering them for work in the future.- Alan G.

AThere work exceeded my expectations. I was very concerned about this job because my husband and I had just had some trees removed, and our yard had been limed and reseeded. It just worked out that I hired ConWorx to do this work after my yard had been done. I mentioned to Mr. Bailey that I didn't want the yard tore up with heavy equipment, so he and his crew dug out the dirt for the foundation by hand. When the job was finished, my yard was left in impeccable shape. I love my new concrete slab. The slab is level and should serve us well. We are excited to install our new storage shed.

AFor several years my husband and I disagreed on remodeling the master bath. One day I looked at the huge garden tub and the amount of space it consumed and decided he was right! I immediately went to Angie’s list and found Ascension Builders. I contacted the office and in no time, Matt Van Alstine returned my call. We talked about what I had in mind and he set up a time to come give us an estimate. He was very polite and considerate. He removed his shoes at the front door! We talked about options to open the small room. He sent us an estimate and my husband and I agreed it was quite reasonable. We also wanted the basement door and casing replaced and Matt said that would not be a problem. From the first day, I knew we had chosen the best company. Matt and his son did a lot of the work; and the subcontractors who work with Matt were great. Matt consulted us on each stage of the job and was very understanding when I had questions. One of the things I appreciated most was Matt’s attention to detail. My husband told Matt he would like to do the wood trim and the painting of the bathroom and Matt did not have a problem with that. Unfortunately, my husband encountered some health issues and when I told Matt, he did not even blink. He simply said no problem and did that part of the job also. Each day all the debris and dust were swept and removed. Matt made accommodations to suit our schedule and said “we are guests in your home” which meant a lot to me. It was, indeed, a pleasure work with Matt, his son and all the crew. I will not wait as long for the next renovation.

AIf you don’t know by now then let me tell you that Roanoke and Roanoke County have a set of approved guidelines that they have adopted when it comes to the construction of a “New” deck where there is an existing deck. If your deck was built more than 5 years ago and you have a band board bolted into brick veneer, then get ready for this: All replacement decks are “Free Standing” . You cannot bolt into Brick Veneer any longer. Your deck must have a post at each corner and must stand alone as a structure. Now, you can attach to brick veneer for decoration IF YOUR DECK IS FREE STANDING.
Ronnie Labrie and his crew built our deck adhering to these guidlines. Ronnie and his crew performed an exceptional job with the construction and final detail of railing and band boards. Uncompromising quality and attention to detail. THIS CONTRACTOR IS BY FAR THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS !
Our deck was built with the best wood material number 1 prime Durapine by Cox and Number 2 prime for structural beams and construction. When the Roanoke County Building inspector tells you that this is the model for all decks to be copied, then we did something right. The deck rails were Oxford by Certainteed the deck stain was by TWP and is not only a sealant but a preservative that EPA has certified. The attention to detail such as the mitered corners, the composite band boards the nailing of the hurricane clips and the overall detail was impressive.
This is a wooden with composite band board and the best Certainteed Oxford railing system. The ingenious suggestion by Ronnie Labrie was to lay the boards at a 38 degree thus the entire board would be used resulting with “NO BUTT ENDS” of any boards. If you look closely every board has been screwed into each stringer board. There is NOT ONE butted board on the walking part of this deck. The beams were sandwich as three beams and were used throughout the construction. You have Three 12 foot boards by 12 inches high that were nailed and bolted to each other to create the best possible load bearing next to a steel beam. The Three 12 foot boards were not compromised in areas that could of used 10 inch high beams. From the footers , hardware, cutting , nailing bolting, cement pour, backfilling of dirt to final railings were all performed by Ronnie Labrie and his crew .
Folks, when I say you can drive a car onto this deck we are not kidding. We have had other contractors to our home doing various other jobs such as landscaping and generator work with all of them commenting on the superior work that was done on the deck. DO NOT COMPROMISE BY USING ANY OTHER CONTRACTOR……………. Ronnie Labrie is your number one ! His project management and construction ethos has resulted in a superior job and I challenge any other contractor to come by and try to pick apart any workmanship.
Bottom Line: You don’t need to look any further; Mr. Labrie is the contractor you need to choose to replace your old deck. You may also ask them to bring you by to personally see their work. From the project manager (Rob) to his contractor staff they all were the most professional folks you can meet. No one was cutting corners to save pennies and only the best workmanship was observed. See pictures and video attached to this post.
If you want to know how good Mr. Labrie is……………… well he is also the Number One person that the Top A+ contractors go to on Angies List. You can cut the middle man out and save a ton of money by going direct with Ronnie Labrie.Reviewed by F T.
