I left feeling that this was a rush job. Since it was an initial appointment I was expecting there would be a lengthy history gathering and comprehensive physical exam. Dr. Kempf did check my muscle strength but did not perform typical exams of my skin or ask me to remove any of my clothing for further inspection. I did not complain of any problems so there was no scheduled reason for a good 'once over' but every other doctor I've visited for the first time was much more comprehensive with a physical exam even when asymptomatic. Dr. Kemp ordered a number of standard labs and a bone density exam that I completed immediately after the office call.
My second feeling of unease came when I tried to speak to someone two weeks after my diagnostic tests. My first phone call was during normal business hours and it went to voicemail. I did not get a reply. My second phone call was very close to 4pm so when it went to voicemail I figured it was my fault but I still did not get a return phone call. My third attempt was during business hours three weeks after the tests and it went to voicemail. I was quite distressed by this point and called back a fourth time later in the day and it was picked up by who I believe was a receptionist since she did not express any medical knowledge. She did locate my lab reports and said they all looked within normal limits. She offered to mail them to my home and accepted that offer. I did ask why my previous three voicemails went unanswered and her excuse was the phones were having problems. I say excuse because I find it hard to believe that a doctors office would allow such a communication problem to persist for that length of time.
When the labs tests arrived at my home I scanned them and noticed some were not within normal limits. I have a history of one test being outside normal limits and my previous doctors always made mention of it even though they understood my history. I believe since this was my first visit to Dr. Kempf and he is not aware of my previous lab history that he would have at least contacted me to pass along the information and offer any explanations or ask me for comment. I intend to contact Dr. Kempf and review the lab tests over the phone. I must become more involved if this is the level of care that is to be expected from this area. I am struggling right now whether to give this office another chance or find a different Rheumatologist. I did select I would use this practice again within my rating form as I'm still on the fence so to speak.
