Odyssey provided hospice services to my mother during the last five days of her life.  I wish that we had been able to involve them earlier but it wasn't clear that my 96 year old mother was that close to the end -- she did not have cancer or other illnesses, just the increasing debilitation of extreme old age.  (Another well-known hospice company with whom we had prior experience seemed unable to help with anything but cancer pain and excessively interested in holding down their costs.)

What an amazingly caring, compassionate, understanding -- lovely -- group of nurses, social workers, counselors and administrators we found at Odyssey.  They showed respect and concern for my mother, who was mostly unconscious following her arrival at Virginia Hospital Center Emergency Department and her admission to a "hospice bed" at the hospital.  They worked well with my mother's physician and the hospital nurses.  They supported me, and my husband, wonderfully.  They were there with us at my mother's bedside several times a day -- and at her memorial service, and in our home and on the phone during the year of follow-up care.  Jessica, you are an angel.

In later 2010 Odyssey held a very special memorial gathering for the surviving families of recent clients.  Family members who attended were invited up to the front to paint a star on a dark blue posterboard and to say a few words commemorating their loved one.  For the decedents whose families didn't attend, an Odyssey staffer painted the star -- and told us a little about the person.  No one could seem so caring without true involvement from the heart.

Thank you, Odyssey,  You will be a blessing to any moribund patient and his or her family who find their way to you.

I cannot say enough good things about Odyssey and all their staff, especially our family's bereavement counselor (Jessica). I wish that everyone who loses a loved one could have the benefit of Odyssey's tender care and assistance. You _CAN_ buy love -- either by getting a dog, or by working with the right hospice care company (and I have previously experienced another hospice provider whose mission was to provide as little service for its per diem as it possibly could.) Odyssey took over while my 95-year-old mother was in the emergency department -- and I was on a business trip in Idaho. They worked with my husband, our physician and the hospital to arrange for my mother to do hospice-at-home in a contract bed at Virginia Hospital Center (to which organization I also feel grateful). They were there as much as we could have wanted, even when it was just to sit with us while my mother lay unconscious. They took care of all the arrangements with the hospital and we never saw any accounting at all, let alone a bill. THe training of the RNs and the social workers was very evident -- but so was their deep caring. Although my mother was never aware of their existence, and she died on the 5th day after hospice came in, two staff members came to her memorial service. Jessica followed up with us throughout the year following my mother's death and came to join us for a meal on the anniversary. Her kindness and professionalism was a true blessing, as was our entire relationship with Odyssey.

It went well.  The therapists and doctors were kind, knowledgeable, and effective.
