    Affordable Lawn And Landscaping LLC
They quoted me for the work(around $1200), came out, and did everything as discussed. However after the first rain most of the soil washed away from the corrugated pipe. When I called them to talk about it they sent someone out to look. They said the yard was graded poorly and we'd keep having wash away issues. I was quoted that it would take another $2100 to fix. If I was told the project would have cost $3300 upfront rather than after I already spent $1200 I probably would have still done the work and not had an issue. But it feels like a bait an switch. To be clear I don't think it was intentionally dishonest, it was just missed by the first person. However I spent a lot of money to be unhappy with the results.

This company is great to work with. They provide diagrams of work to be performed, provide estimates, and then on-line contract approval. They do what they said they were going to do and do it superbly. We couldn't be more pleased.

    Grass Roots Lawn & Landscaping
Lawn was bare clay & rock it's now GREEN and thick. I had sod put in 2 years ago, it failed. Dana made my life easier, happy wife. We've hired him for 2016, added an additional acre, and a landscaping redo of our pergola & barbecue area. Highly recommend. Great results and cost is a pleasant surprise.

    Grass Roots Lawn & Landscaping

The owner is easy going and good to deal with.  Pricing was reasonable.  Fall aeration/seeding/fertilizing was done very well. Regular mowing/edging was average quality.

The disaster was the Fall yard clean-up, which was the single most expensive service we paid for ($460).  Grassroots came out twice and the job still wasn't completed according to what they said they would do - bushes around the house went untrimmed, beds remained filled with weeds, an entire bed of strawberry plants were pulled out, and a mature Japanese maple that should have just been trimmed off the ground was hacked up, including broken (not cut or sawn) limbs.  Most of the foliage looked like a weedwacker was just run over it.

I brought this to the attention of the owner (who offered to come out and walk the yard), but not having the job done right two times in a row and incurring damage to the foliage isn't something that we wanted to waste our time on again. This was unfortunate, because we were using Grassroots for full service yard care.   We will find someone else.

    NaturaLawn of America
My yard was degrading due to terrible service from TruGreen.  After canceling TruGreen, I called NaturaLawn of America.  Although NaturaLawn did not have an office close by, they were willing to travel the extra mile and review my yard.  After the review, within 24 hours I had a professional crew repairing my yard.  I have now established service with NaturaLawn of America.

Failed to properly maintain lawn health.  Many parts of the yard are now dead requiring re-sod.   Confusion within the TruGreen organization to which office would manage this community of 500+ homes in Spotsylvania County, VA.   Service was either late, did not come, and in one case provided the incorrect application to the yard killing much of the grass.

I want to say upfront that in January 2013, I wrote a very unfavorable review for Dana Lyon/ Grass Roots.  He apologized on this site following that review and I decided to give him a second chance this past year (2014).   That was a great decision.   Dana has been very responsive to all our yard concerns and has gone out of his way to offer options that no other company would be willing to do.   He is very personable, easy to work with, and is a no pressure guy.   We have enjoyed many conversations over the past year.   I have already told him I want him to continue our lawn service in 2015, and we are seriously considering adding lawn mowing this year.   I can only say I regret  that we got started on the wrong foot in 2013, as we are totally satisfied customers now.

Called and also sent Grass Roots Lawn and Landscaping an email. Called me to discuss my leaf removal within 3 days. Although didn't show up on day said for estimate, the owner (Dana Lyon) said he had sent an employee the next day when I wasn't home. We agree on the price which was about the same as othe estimates. I like to use local small businesses and Grass Roots had a great "A" rating on Angie's List so I decided to go with them. When I came home from work, the work was done actually a week earlier than I thought it would be which was a nice surprise. (Note: I knew the rainy weather may change the date of the leaf removal and I was fine with that since Dana and I had discussed this.) My only concern is I would like to pay Grass Roots for their great work but have been unable to speak with anyone and don't have an address to send their payment to as their website doesn't have a street address. I have left messages but have not received a call to tell me where to send the money for their service. Grass Roots did a great job and I plan to use them again next year.

    Commonwealth Irrigation & Landscape

Contractor crew (three persons) arrived at approximately 9:15 a.m. on the date scheduled and worked on yard as called for in contract.  At approximately 12:45 p.m., they left.  A day or so later, we took a closer look at their work and found that there were still a lot of leaves left in the flower beds.  Apparently, only the leaves that could be blown out with a leaf blower were removed.  Many leaves still remained in the flower beds that were stuck to the ground due to them being wet from a recent rain.  There were still a number of weeds in the flower beds.  There was still a significant amount of debris and weeds in the ornamental ditch and, again, it appears that only the leaves that could be blown out with a leaf blower were removed.  The mulch appeared to have just been dumped in the flower beds, with no attempt to sculpt it around the plants and trees, or to level it out in a contoured manner.  Many of our ornamental stones were also left covered by the mulch.  The edging to the flower beds was done by shovel instead of a machine.  When the crew left, there were a great many muddy shoeprints left on our sidewalk and driveway, which I pressure washed off a few days later myself.

We advised the owner of our issues and he rescheduled another crew to come out the next week to redo the cleaning.

The second crew came out and improved somewhat on the job from the first crew, but it was still lacking as there were still weeds and leaves in the flower beds, ornamental rocks were still covered by mulch and debris was still in the ornamental ditch.

We advised the owner again of our concerns on the quality of the clean up performed and he advised he would send another crew out to redo it again.

We were out of town when the third crew came, but when we returned, we found the clean up to be somewhat satisfactory in our opinion, but not nearly as good as the jobs our previous contractor had done for $600.  I still had to get out and broom brush the mulch from tops of the ornamental rocks in the flower garden and also smoothed out the mulch somewhat, as it appears little was done to contour it nicely over the width and length of the flower beds.  I previously used a neighborhood company whose crew got down on their hands and knees to carefully lay the mulch, sculpting small craters around the base of trees, and really smoothing out all the high spots in the mulch.  This was not done in this case.

On the initial visit, we asked the crew to add trimming the bushes in the flower beds to the contract, which was done at a cost of $48 (one staff person for one hour of work).  When the second crew returned to redo the work, we were advised the cost of the trimming would be about $96.  When we called the contractor's office on this, we were advised that since there were two workers present, we would have to be charged for two hours work, instead of the initial one hour cited by the crew member on the first visit.  I understand what a staff hour of work is, but I could not understand that if there was only an hour's work in trimming the bushes for one person, why were we charged an hour's work for each of the two crew members?  Also, it appears what trimming was done was just to trim the tops off the bushes - no trimming or shaping of the sides of the bushes was apparent to us.  I routinely trim the same bushes they trimmed and it usually takes me 20 minutes with a battery powered trimmer, not the two hours of labor I was charged.

As I mentioned above, for the past several years we used a contractor who operates in the neighborhood and he charges about $600 for the Spring clean up.  We decided to go with Commonwealth on the Spring clean up this time based on our previous experience with them in installing an additional zone in our sprinkler system  (I posted a review on this project) and installing a French drain in our front yard (for which I also will post a review), and the fact we wanted to essential "bundle" all of our yard related services with one company, to include fertilization, weed control, over seeding, and aeration.  This is the main reason we were willing to pay $1,000 for a job that had costs us $600 in the past.  In this case, this just didn't work out well for us.

The crew worked for most of the day. They were quick and efficient, most of all, they did a good job. Dave checked before they left to make sure we were happy with the job and give follow-up care instructions. Our yard looks better after one treatment by the Garrett Group than it did after two years with a national lawn service.
