A note on the cost.... I only moved a half hour down the road!

As another poster said, it took a week for them to get a salesperson out to do the "survey". Then another 3 days to give me an estimate. Kind of odd since the salesperson had a tablet with all the software on it and movers I used in the past were able to give me an estimate on site.  But the salesperson seemed  bright, and while the initial estimate was a little higher than I would have liked, it didn't seem totally unreasonable.

But that is where the romance ends.  The salesperson was off on their weight estimate by almost 6,000 lbs!  I think it was a "bait and switch" situation....they low ball the original weight to get you to sign and then "get you" with the actual weight.  That little error increased the cost by almost $3000.00!  Yes, actual weight will not always be the estimated weight, but to be off by that much is incompetent at best.  (BTW, nothing was "hidden" up in an attic or shed, etc.)

The next issue I had  was that I contracted with them to do "some packing".  I only asked them to pack the kitchen and master bedroom. That's 2 rooms out of a 7 room house and two car garage.  The sales person said he'd put it at 40%  of the total weight for now, and if it was less it could be scaled back later.  Well guess what didn't get scaled back???  The actual shipping weight came out to 20,840 lbs.  All they packed was 7 wardrobes, 5 dish packs and about 10 misc sized boxes and they didn't even complete the assigned rooms.  I had to finish them!  There is NO way what they packed constitutes 40% of a 20,000 lb load.  Even after I disputed the  charges, they still sent me a bill for the full 40%.  Guess what is NOT getting paid?

Should I write about the damage?  Might as well since you've stayed with me this long.  An oak bookcase was literally destroyed.  The back panel was split open and the bottom knocked out of the drawer...and I can't find the shelves!   Another bookcase has the trim hanging off the front and those shelves are MIA too, (Why did they remove the shelves and what did they do with them???)  A wood cabinet has a chunk out of the top and they snapped a door pull off an antique Victrola. Some drinking glasses were broken because they packed them stacked inside each other without paper in-between them.  There are a lot more little things like dings and scratches on the furniture. I can't tell you if they'll honor my claim as I haven't filed it yet, but given how they do business I don't think it will go well.

Mike tore down the old deck and built a screened-in porch

he removed the old bathtub and commode and replaced the tub with a walk-in shower and replaced the commode with a taller one.

He also tore up the carpet in spare bedroom and repaired floor and replaced with hard wood flooring.

He also replaced shingles outside. He also replaced and or repaired pluming to do the job.

Spoke to Mr. Steve Tingen, the owner.  He stated he would go to my rental property and call me back with an estimate. I told him the tenant has a leaking roof and there may be other work for him to do but for now I needed an estimate on repairing the leak. He went to the property, looked at the leak, told the tenant he would be in touch with the landlord but he never called me nor will he answer my calls.  If he is not interested in the job he could have at least given me feed back on why he doesn't want the job instead of ignoring my calls.  I've called him 3 times to find out the results but he will not answer.  He was prompt in going to the property and unprofessional in responsiveness.  NEVER recommend!!!

Was amazing that it all was done in a weekend, old ceiling was torn down and taken away and cleaned up within the hour, all the old materials were taken away and left clean, everything was done that we had talked about and even quicker than I had anticipated knowing that he had much work

I responded to an ad posted on Craig's List for a glass table top, to replace mine which got broken accidentally. The seller agreed to split up the payments, as we are on disability. His asking price was well within reason. We paid off the entire amount asked for the the table top of $120.00. We made the 3 hour trip to Greenville, NC, to pick up the table top only to discover that our mini van was 1/2 inch short of being able to fit the table top into it. We had to go back home without the table top and find another way to bring it home. The seller agreed to hold the table top until such time as we could make arrangements to either pick it up or have it shipped to us. Nothing was said about charging us for storing the table top.
Later, when we realized that finding a vehicle that would hold it would not be possible, and the shipping charges would be more than out of our ability to pay, I contacted the owner of Star Designs who immediately went on the defensive and declared he didn't owe us anything, and that he was going to charge us for storing the table top. Nothing had been said about storage fees until this conversation. He also said he didn't have time to be taking my calls and didn't want us to harass him. We had not called him or  harassed him. He added that he didn't think he should return the money we paid and was not going to do it. He basically challenged us to even attempt to recover our money. He indicated he was going to sell the table top and would give us a portion of what we paid after it was sold. I am unaware if he has actually sold the table top.
As of now, he has never refunded our money and apparently has no intentions of doing so. This owner is unscrupulous and dishonest. I will never recommend or do business with this company again!

We were first introduced to Mr. Stevens when we were planning on moving to South Boston, VA.  Mr. Stevens tried to sell us a broken down trailer promoted as brand new, and land at top price. He then did all he could to keep my husband and myself from actually seeing this trailer before buying by refusing to disclose just where this trailer was located. He then defrauded us out of our down payment through dishonest and unethical tactics. He also took advantage of my blindness when he had me to sign a contract that was not as he described therein. He took advantage of the fact that my husband and I didn't have any experience in working with contractors or buying real estate.
When we finally located the trailer he was trying to sell us, it was in another state, and full of broken furnishings which the dealer refused to replace, even though he was selling it as a new trailer. We confronted Mr. Stevens with what we discovered and backed out of the deal; however, Mr. Stevens, who had already defrauded us out of our down payment, refused to return the money. We since learned that he has defrauded others in this area of Virginia. He has yet to return all of the down payment to us.
He allegedly took our money and immediately deposited it into his personal bank account, and allegedly used it to pay off one of his other debts. It was never used for the trailer, land, or construction we were buying.
Do NOT deal with this man! He is totally dishonest!

This is the second time I've tried to contact this company for service. In April I provided this company's name to my mother for servfice at her home in South Boston VA, they never responded. I wrote a review and gave a failing grade to which the contractor responded that they didn't service my area ((Raleigh, NC) and they did not fail to respond and I possibly might have confused them with other companies in my area. On 5/21/12 I  personally left a message on the answering machine of Expert Roofing & Guttering  (336) 599-6255 asking that they call me back at my mother's home in South Boston, VA and as of this date have not received a call back. I have never asked for service at my home in Raleigh, I have not confused them with another company in Raleigh. We have asked for an estimate for roofing repair for a residence in South Boston, VA which according to the site and personal knowledge is less than 30 minutes from Roxboro.

They did a great job - our house is old and large - quite a challenge. After the installation they came out to our house to make some corrections, came promptly and did the work without charge. We're 100% satisfied.

Drew arrived on time, described in detail the history of the company, how they work, and ability to complete the work on time and to the customer's satisfaction. He took measurements and calculated an estimate while here. The initial price was more than two other bids, but was nearly the same after a 15% discount if agreed to within 5 days and an additional $100 off if we moved the furniture ourselves. While impressed with Drew's confidence to complete the work on time and to our satisfaction, we decided to hire a general contractor for the work. A more complicated issue came up during the bid process requiring plumbing repair, sheet rock removal/repair, and painting.

This company was excellent. They were quite responsible. It was expensive, but worth it. The lawn was pristine when they finished. He provided their insurance information as well. They came when they said they would. They had a lot of equipment including a bucket truck, stump grinder and other equipment to grind up branches. There were 3 cedar trees around this dead elm and they did not damage them or the lawn at all!!
