Door Installation reviews in Smithfield

    Doormasters, Inc.
From Melody setting up the job/initial-estimate and appointments to Tom doing the inspection/final-estimate and arranging to install the pet door, the operation went smoothly. When the door was ready, they installed the Hale pet door at the shop. The following week the 'crew' of Elvis, Larry, James, and Ralph arrived promptly after a 'warning' phone call. They had the job completed in about 3 hours, including all the finishing touches - caulking, locks installed, cleanup inside and out. Everything is picture perfect from the interior frame molding to the outside sill and the matches-our-siding white aluminum (?) 'wrap' around the outside door frame (which should resist the raccoon/critter that gnawed away chunks of the old frame). All-in-All, an outstanding job by folks who live up to their name.

Robert talley was hired to build a home addition.  Was very professional and responded quickly to phone calls.  After meeting with about 6 contractors, we decided to go to him.  Almost immediately the quick response time slowed.  I know a lot about construction but because of my job i was unable to be home to supervise subcontractors which is why I hired Robert.  Apparently he didn't have time either.  With the exception of his mason who laid my foundation, everybody he hired was unprofessional and performed substandard work... that is if they showed up at all.  throughout the course of the job, we had workers at our house an average of 1-2 days a week.  Nobody ever cleaned up after themselves  and he was never there to ensure they did the job correctly.  I'm not sure he was even sure what we wanted.  Walls were way out of square windows were put in sideways (yes sideways) .  Also, because I wasn't smart enough to realize this was a bad idea, our contrract was set up with a fixed fee to him and then I would just reimburse all the material costs.  Great, I thought because i know I am only paying for what i need and without a markup...WRONG.  He consistently bought way more than i needed and then gave me a receipt and told me to go return this stuff, which was bout at many different places all over hampton roads.  I don't have the time or the resources to return all that stuff.  plus, he had stuff delivered to my yard and it sat outside for so long that once it was realized that too much was bought, i couldn't return it anyway.

    Job broken down by steps
.  Footing:  Mr. Talley explained exactly how to dig the footing to his workers and left them to it.  However they clearly did not understand and when I came home a few hours later they were digging it incorrectly.   The next day the footing was poured.  If I had not corrected them, the footing would have been poured incorrectly since he did not inspect the trench dug before it was poured.
    2. Blocks:  One wall in the addition was the most important because it had to line up with a wall in the current house and become a continuous wall.  The mason laid the blocks per a mark that Mr. Talley made himself.  I had to myself open up the side of my house to find the wall and found it to be 3 inches off of the mark.  Also, because the mark was off the footing was off as well which was repaired with 3 bags of concrete.  He charged me for these bags.  I let this go at the time because it was still the beginning of our relationship and I didn't want to have an issue so early over 10 dollars.  During the foundation process, An entire bucket of the wrong kind of sand was dumped in my yard and remained there for 7 months until i finally paid to have it removed.  he charged me for that sand as well
    3. Jobsite.  I could not imagine a messier crew.  Why he didn't have a dumpster from the beginning, i don't know. I already commented above about the crews complete lack of any cleanup after the day.  The trash in my yard was much more than building materials , as there were at least 50 empty drink bottles.  This is unexceptable.  His crew also failed to ever put up a barrier when working in my house to ensure that dust and dirt did not contaminate the rest of the house.
    4.  Communication:  non existant.  I had no trouble getting ahold of Mr. talley when i was a potential customer but once he got the initial deposit  it was almost impossible to get a hold of him unless he needed a check.
    5.  Quality of work.  He never inspected the work.  I have pictures of every step of this job and there were many things I should not have had to point out to him.  that is his job.   The one thing that stands out above all is the window being put in sideways.  Their attention to detail and quality of work was unacceptable... except by Mr. Talley.  He said I didn't know when he came to the house because sometimes nobody was home,  Which is very hard to believe because my wife is almost always home.  If in fact he did always come to inspect the work, how is it he missed a window being put in sideways among all the others things. He actually said to me "you're one of those perfect people."  I can't imagine anybody saying that to their customer.  I am paying him a lot of money and expect to get a quality product.  Anybody who would say that to a customer has no pride in their own work .
    6.  Roof.  I gave him a sample of a shingle to buy for my roof, an example of one that came from my garage, and he decided to get a different color which is so different, my house looks ridiculous and i will have to get the rest of the roof redone to match what he put on there.
7.The people finishing the drywall have an 11-12 year old kid working with them.  I understand times are hard and daycare is expensive and would have no problem with them bringing him.  He could even watch TV with my kids if he wanted to.  but it is completely unsafe and not to mention violating child labor laws to have a kid his age performing work on my house.
Every one of these problems and plenty more that i did not feel the need to list right now could have been avoided if he had just come to my house every once in a while so we could discuss the progress of the job and handle any issues that I had.  But he refused to come.  When I asked him to come out to discuss these things, his words were, "You're really gonna make me come all the way out there?"
Please saty away from this contractor.  He is very unprofessional and does not hire quality workers nor does he supervise the workers he does hire to ensure they do the job correctly.  A general contractor doesn not need to be at the job site all day, but should be there at a minimum at the beginning and end of the day to check on progress.  Mr. Talley's idea was that he needed to visit the jobsite when he needed money.

Every time I called him to fix the door,  he says he has the flu.  This has been over the course of a year and a half.  He just doesn't want to come back to finish the job.  I have paid him and he has not finished it.  I had such a good experience when he was here, and then I asked him to fix something he won't come back to do it.

When he came to install the door he showed up exactly when he said he would and he brought a helper and he got the job done in one day but he doesn't want to come back to make it right.

Unfortunately there are some good things that I can say about him, but he is just not interested in picking up the pieces when something goes wrong.   I thought the price was reasonable because it was a heavy job and he had to bring a helper.

The representative from Anderson Windows  that came to our home to see the door said that it was not installed correctly.  I will not use this company again in the future.

Workers were on time, brought all materials. Doors are beautiful.  They replaced all trim and door jams.  NO more air spaces! Smooth open and close sales and stopped by to check on job.
