Set up an appointment by phone about 2wks in advance, and was requested to go online an fill out a contact sheet. This is about twice the lead time of other potential contractors, and none requested I go online as a second operation.
They showed up exactly on time, and were quite thorough in their evaluation. Caused no mess and did no damage.
Two weeks later I received a bill for generating the estimate. You will notice that NOWHERE in the previous description did they mention a cost associated with providing an estimate. Personally, I refuse to pay for estimates and if it had been mentioned I would NOT have engaged with them ( I had already refused a contractor based on estimate charges on this very project. Estimates are a cost of doing business, and not a guaranteed income).
Fortunately, though they disagreed with my stance of not being told of these charges (see above), they did remove them.
As a cautionary tale, just be sure to ask if there are any charges associated with providing an estimate. At this point everyone is aware of the conditions of engagement and an informed decision can be made.
