    Southwest Sunroom & Window Co.
... After studying their High Quality work on a friend's 2nd Story Sunroom and Dining Room... My Bride and I decided that we wanted this little company in Salem to build our Dream Room. Steve ( Southwest Sunroom Sales Manager ) was right on track; He reassured us that the Southwest Team could handle any contingency. And they did with Incredible Results ! Personable and friendly communication, and coordination, removed all the stress that comes with any challenging project - they actually made it fun. These are professional contractors and builders and a service team that deliver to Happy Customers. Some events: Pergula takedown, Deck removed, Fish pond moved and filled in, Electrical power updated to code, and power lead moved to other side of home... Then the really impressive Construction started on our 14x18-foot new "LIVING ROOM" There were No Inspection Issues, WOW. And believe me, the inspectors were here during All stages of the project (s), You get your money's worth plus = Southwest always builds safe, above, and beyond the code. i.e. you can literally drive a tank up on the subfloor and foundation. It Is BUILT ! I retired from the U.S Marines and have spent the last 26 years in Service and Installation work locally, and have been to "some" job sites and teamed up with lots of service people. What has impressed me most about the Southwest folks was how motivated and skilled the two guys that did most of the construction were... Troy and Key really excel in my book, and they obviously love the kind of challenging work they do. Come sun or rain , they were here early and motivated and ready with a plan to get 'er done. Communication and Status updates are very good top-down = Service Manager and VP (Kevin) Kept all of us in the loop informed... Even after the initial startup and walk around... to make sure each Builder, Contractor, and Customer is Happy and on the same sheet of music. Noteworthy: When the guys who are actually building your sunroom care enough to call and remind you "that if anything should go wrong this weekend [ because of an approaching tropical storm ] please just call us, we will be home all weekend." That is when you know Southwest has attracted some really Great Employees ! By the way, the new roof and guttering held back and dispersed an incredible amount of rain. The cleanup was always immaculate every day and at Completion = You almost can't tell they were even here and the Mud had been very high... Well, I lied just a little; There is this incredibly fine building attached to our little home. It is really more of a cathedral than a Sunroom ! This experience, and this addition, has been BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST THINGS WE HAVE EVER DONE. Pat and Theresa L 2018 Salem Virginia [ smile ]

    Affordable Measures Home Improvements
In the beginning all went well. Until spring came and it appears contractor desired quick jobs. Kept putting our completion off until he refused to return calls. We now have an uncompleted home remodel, no shed and no deck.

    Dollman Construction, Inc
The crew that was onsite during the renovation was great as well. They always kept the site clean and was respectful when asked questions about the process. They were also very knowledgeable about construction and codes to make the house very sound. The house is around eighty years old and with the work they have done I can see it being around another eighty or more. The office staff was always willing to help with any questions or concerns we had and would promptly respond if they could not answer right then. Working with Dollman Construction was one of the best choices we made. People do not even recognize the house now that it is complete they did such a great job.

    Pierce Siding & Window Co
It went very well. The bulk of the work was done by Robbie Pierce's two-man crew of Randy, with over 30 years of experience, and Austin, Robbie's son, assisting. Randy's professionalism and experience showed in the care he took in his work to get things done just right. We're pleased with the windows themselves (Wincore) which are very easy to clean on both sides without the need to go outside or use a ladder. They have screens included on the bottom half. The cost of the windows and labor was very fair. We got a break because we had 17 windows to do. We paid separately for the doors (Pella sliding patio doors with blinds inside). The installation of those didn't go as smoothly since the old doors were of a non-standard size. However, they solved the problem. They were responsive, punctual, and cleaned up all work areas well. Their presence didn't interfere with our daily activities. We would highly recommend this family-owned and operated (now three generations) business to anyone needing their services.

    Appalachian Building Concepts
There were a lot of hurdles due to the original builders. Mike and lou moved all of the plumbing. That involved moving the pressure tank and water heater. They had to cut up the concrete floor to move drains for tub, shower, toilet and vanity. They had to reframe the entire area 1500sf., then rewired all new circuits. They insulated the walls and installed moisture and vapor barrier. Then installed drywall with trayed ceilings with rope lights concealed behind crown molding. They installed an engineered bamboo flooring. The bathroom is beautiful. My shower stall has pebble tiled floor with custom porcelain tile walls, with an accent strip of stones. They put in two shower niches with three shower heads and two shower valves. with all brushed nickel hardware. they installed a frameless frosted glass shower door. They did excellent work as always. this is my fourth major project by Mike, and I will use them to build my next project which will be a garage!

    Dollman Construction, Inc
This is an update to the review below--I just wanted to add that Dolman Construction continues to stand by their work even after the check is long cashed.  Since I wrote this review and the work was completed, we discovered a few problems.  Nothing major, but there were a few things that we felt need to be corrected.  Jimmy was very responsive to our requests.  If he got tired of hearing from us, you couldn't tell it by his demeanor.  All issues were addressed and taken care of to our satisfaction with out argument or friction.  I was very impressed by that, and when we get ready to do further work on this house, we will absolutely be calling Dollman Construction to do the work.

We bought a house in October that needed a substantial amount of work done before we could move it.  I found Dollman construction on Angie's List and contacted Jimmy Dollman based on the reviews I read here.  Jimmy Dollman met with us at the house a few days later.  We described what we wanted to do, and he carefully explained that would cost far more than we had imagined.  A lot more.
He then patiently listened to our extensive wish list, made a lot of measurements, and talked with us about various possibilities.  Instead of expanding the current kitchen (which was on a back porch that had been enclosed and was quite small, awkward, and out of date) outside of the "footprint" of the house, which costs a lot more, he suggested we put the kitchen in an adjoining room, and open the wall between the two rooms.  This gave us the possibility of a larger kitchen, a walk-in pantry, a place for a small kitchen table, and a good sized play area for our son.  Brilliant!  We loved this idea in theory and the result has been even better than I imagined.
We knew that the whole roof on the house needed to be replaced.  The older part of the house had ancient metal shingles that had mostly lost their paint.  The garage was attached to the house and had what I think of as a "shed" roof--no peak, just a flat roof that sloped away from the house.  These two features combined made the house look like, well, kind of like a shack.  Neither roof was very sound, either, because they both started leaking soon after we closed (of course).  Dollman construction replaced the whole roof with shingles, fixed all the rotten wood they found, and replaced all the gutters.  They also completely rebuilt the roof over the garage, so it has a peak and ties in to the roof of main part of the house.  It's amazing how much better the house looks with the new shingles and roof line.  I know they did a good job on the roof, the gutters, and fixed all the leaks, because after the last heavy
snow, the water was gushing out of the downspouts like a waterfall, but everything inside was dry.
Jimmy also created a very beautiful design for the kitchen.  However, with the kitchen, the project was way outside what we felt we could spend.  So, Jimmy came up with a way to put off the purchase of new, custom cabinets and counter tops by installing used cabinets and counters.  This really saved us, because it brought the cost of the whole project into a range we could deal with, but still gave me a very functional kitchen (and a new roof) until we can sell the old house.  Better yet, all the electrical and plumbing is in the right place for the original design.  Frankly, I'm amazed at what Jimmy's crew was able to do with the used cabinets and counter tops.  It's actually very darned close to the layout in the design.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do with the new cabinets and counter tops, but I'm very happy with the intermediate results.
What I appreciate most about Jimmy is his willingness to work with us and our budget.  We had a long list of things we needed and wanted to do.  He worked with us extensively to break the work into several phases, and price those phases, so we could decided what was most important and what we could wait on.  This was very important to us, and really proved we were working with the right person.  I know this was probably a lot of extra work for him, but he did it with patience and good will.  He explained what work needed to be done, how the work would go, and what we could expect, very carefully (sometimes more than once), until we felt we understood well enough to make the right choices.
We wanted to do some of the work ourselves, to save money (paint and some trim).  When we discussed that with Jimmy, he was receptive to it, helped us get some of the materials, and kept us informed about the time frame for getting our part of the work
Dollman Construction started working on our house right after Christmas 2013.  They are just about done now, in the later part of April 2014.  Considering the amount of work to be done, and the truly rotten weather we've had this winter, I think they've worked very quickly.
All of the Dollman people that have come to work on the house have done an excellent job, cleaned up well, been careful with our property, and been generally pleasant to meet.  The plasterers (subcontractors) did leave a bit of a mess behind.  I saw it one evening, but didn't have a chance to do anything about it.  I went over a couple of days later, and Jimmy's crew had cleaned everything up.  They shoveled snow, too, when we couldn't get out to do it.  On the few occasions there have been problems (and it seems there just will be with a project this big), they have been addressed quickly and completely.
Jimmy is very responsive to his clients, returning phone calls, emails, and calling to update us on the project and what's coming next.  One evening, we thought we smelled gas at the house.  It was a faint, and we opened a window, planning to go back the next day and see if we could still smell it.  I emailed Jimmy to let him know, and Jimmy went over to the house at 9 p.m. on a Sunday evening to check it out.  Everything was okay, and I really appreciated his concern and dedication.
We were very anxious about the renovation process and spending what is quite a lot of money for us.  We probably drove Jimmy more than a little crazy because of that, but he was always polite, professional, and personable with us.  We quickly came to trust him and the people that work with him.  We are looking forward to working with him again, once we've sold the old house, and are ready to finish the kitchen in the new one.
I'd love to have Dollman Construction remodel our bathrooms somewhere down the road.  They will be my first choice every time.

    E A Construction Inc
Both jobs done by EA Construction were done very well. They were very polite, always on time, always cleaned up after themselves, and if they had any question or issue they discussed it with us instead of just doing something which I appreciated. They were good guys and I would ask them again to do work.

    Window Max Inc
Absolutely the worst contracting experience ever. A total nightmare. Promised us everything and never did anything right. Windows- I told him we had 27, he only counted 25 and had to order 2 more. Slide control for the internal blinds on one sash is missing and they never replaced it. Doors - Sliding glass doors installed backward and never fixed correctly (control pulleys for blinds in the middle and not on the ends). Front door poorly stained and glossy polyurethane slopped on top. Blamed the door manufacturer, got a replacement, again terrible stain job and it sat for 2 years in my garage - never installed. Replaced trim around french doors and never finished or painted it. Kitchen - promised to remove the old flooring but put the new floor over top. Ordered the wrong cabinets, wrong sizes, wrong stain. Told us we would get custom cabinets and we got mostly boxed cabinets. Wrong configurations, depths, etc. Many had to be sent back and some are still not correct. Installed lights in incorrect positions. Put switches and outlets over the counter at different and uneven heights. Placed switches in odd locations. Put in Heat/AC registers in the ceiling - never connected them to the ducts, just left them open to the space above the ceiling. Bathrooms - ordered the wrong cabinets with drawers instead of doors, installed commode with the tank crooked, plumbing for 2 sinks in bathroom was incorrect and we had to pay another contractor to bring it up to code. Was to replace linen closet door and never did. Paint - Hired paint crew that got paint on our wallpaper, floors, carpet and furniture till we demanded they leave our house and not return. Used paint and colors other than our selections. Ruined a ceiling fan and promised to repair it but never did. $$$$ - demanded more money or he would not compete the work. When he had more money than for the work completed, he refused to even start the other bathroom and bedroom parts of the job that were part of the original contract. Would not tell us how much the granite countertops we selected would cost until the very last minute and we were forced to pay much more than budgeted. He got nasty when we pointed out their mistakes and asked them to correct problems. Job was to take 6 weeks and after 6 months they just walked away, refused to answer phone calls or emails. I had to hire another contractor to fix the problems and finish the incomplete parts of the original contract at great expense. Summary - I would not hire Window Max, Kitchen and Bath Max, Braden Miles, Joe Brightwell, or Steve Smith to build a dog house. My advice to anyone considering them would be RUN!!!!!!!!!!! They may give the lowest bid, but you will not get even what you pay for. STAY AWAY from these guys. They are the ones who give contractors a bad name. There are a lot more details to this nightmare, but I think you will get the picture.

    Crockett Home Improvement Inc
We had an immediate response to our initial call for the estimate.  Mr. Crockett came the same day and emailed the estimate that evening.  Work was scheduled for the following week and everything was completed in 8 days!  We could not be more pleased with the quality of work or the quality of service.  Mr. Crockett has a wonderful crew of guys that work for him.  They come early, stay late and do a great job.  There is no detail too small.  We will definitely use Crockett Home Improvement for all of our future needs and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.  They are the absolute best !!!!!

    Bone-Dry Construction and waterproofing inc
We were very anxious about the floor. It took a lot of preparation of the floor as they used some new products. They communicated well with us. They did exactly what we asked. They did meticulous work especially on the preparation. They hired a tile guy to put down some tile. They fixed up a couple of windows and also hung a door. They put in a new stud wall and did some painting too. It was really a full service contractor job but they do specialize in basement renovation. They put in a new drain to take care of some leakage under a door. They were very versatile and courteous. They were good communicators. It was good to have them around the house. They did everything we asked them to. They just finished half a week ago. Their price was very competitive. We talked to three different people and they were the best priced. They stayed with the punctuality. They came late in the day sometimes, early afternoon at times because I guess they had a couple of jobs going. Overall they finished on schedule.
