Upholstery reviews in Roanoke

  • I am very satisfied with the workmanship at a very reasonable price. The only limitation for some projects may be a limited supply of material on hand. However, upholstery material is readily available elsewhere for their use. Highly recommended.

  • My husband and I check with several upholstery shops to see what they would charge to recover two of my mom's favorite chairs. We went to two places and they quoted me really high prices. It was the fabric that was so high. Plus they had to order the fabric and then there was shipping charges. We went to Mr. Chumbley shop and talked with his son. Mr. Chumbley was not there at the time. Again it was the fabric and shipping charges. The son quoted us a high price to recover my 2 chairs. There was a fabric that they had in stock that I really liked as it was burgundy. I have burgundy drapes. We left cause the price was high, but I got a piece of the fabric before we left. I went house and kept thinking about my chairs. I really didn't want to get new ones. After 3 days, I called Mr. Chumbley, told him about our visit, told him I only had so much money to work with and that he had the fabric in stock that I likes. He said let me stop by and see the chairs and I'll see what I can do as I am the boss...
He stopped, we talked and reach an agreement on Price, he took the chairs. He had the chairs back in one week and 1/2. The fabric had dots and every dot was lined up on the back and seat pillow..They are beautiful. If you want the best this is the man!!!!

  • I stopped in to see Mr. Chumley about reupholstering my living room sofa. I had looked elsewhere for fabric, but could not find any I liked. He helped me pick out a piece that he could special order. It would be available in 2 days. He picked the sofa up within less than a week, and had the work done in just about one more week. His labor is fair ($550 for my sofa) and he does great work. He waited until he had my sofa and could measure it exactly, and was therefore able to save me money on fabric. I did not expect it, but he made me armrest covers as well. Now I need to get 2 chairs covered because the sofa looks so good.

  • I brought a picture of the chairs I needed to have recovered to Citizens in Vinton. Mr. Ralph Chumley was familiar with the chair and was able to tell me the fabric yardage and labor costs on the spot. He has some fabric on hand at the shop, but I opted to order some. Mr. Chumley let me take some fabric books home so I could choose a fabric. I returned the next day with the chairs and the fabric I selected. He told me it would take a week to complete the job. He called me in exactly one week to say the chairs were done. The chairs were done beautifully. He even gave me the roll of leftover fabric, which has never happened with any other upholsterer I have used. The price was extremely fair and I would recommend them highly. Since Mr.Chumley's main fabric supplier is in NC, he can get them the next day, which explains the quick turnaround. (I had the ability to drop off and pick up my chairs, but I understand he will pick up and deliver for free, if needed)

  • The process went very well the work was done according to the original estimate and in a timely manner.   He worked well with us as we were also refinishing the wood.  We are very pleased with the final outcome.

  • My partner and I were conflicted over whether to replace or reupholster a sofa and chair whose original fabric was showing its age. Having shopped for new contemporary furniture in an area where contemporary means Early American, we decided to at least avail ourselves of an estimate on getting the furniture recovered. After asking around, a coworker recommended Citizen's Upholstery, and we called on a Friday morning with the expectation of making an appointment for the following week. The owner, Ralph Chumley, answered the phone personally, agreed that he was interested in giving us an estimate, and asked if noon the same day was convenient. Noon? Yes, in less than two hours, Mr. Chumley was standing in our den, tape measure and fabric samples in hand. He did some calculations (in his head, no less) and agreed the job would be $1,000.00 for labor plus the cost of the fabric. He stated clearly that we needed sixteen yards of material, and each fabric sample was clearly marked with its per yard price. While he agreed that fabric was all about style, color and personal preference, he made a point of commenting on the durability of our decade-old sofa and which new fabrics would most closely approximate the life of the original. He left several books of fabric samples and told us to keep them as long as we wanted and be sure to examine our final selections in varying lighting conditions to ensure we were satisfied with our final choice. We were astounded by his professionalism. We didn't intend to keep the samples over a month, but work schedules and the travails of life intervened, and we were quite some time making a final fabric selection. Once we did, we returned the samples to the Citizen's showroom and placed our order. Mr. Chumley required no deposit, picked up our sofa and chair without charge, recovered the sofa and chair, and returned both, again without charge, in the promised seven days. While the finished product admittedly did not reflect the craftsmanship of the original, we also didn't have to import it from Italy as we had the sofa when it was new. There were a few bumpy seams here and there and the transitions between horizontal and vertical lines were not always smooth, but we are certain no one but us would notice. We will forgive the lapse in craftsmanship given the incredible service we were provided. So, for less than one-fifth the price of the original, we have a and quot;newand quot; sofa and new friend whose company we highly recommend.

  • The quality of work was very good although they had to re-make the chair cushion with new foam and batting. Initially, I think they simply recovered what was there. The chair was over 10 years old, so the interior of the seat cushion was not very supportive. When they took it back to re-do they did not charge for additional fabric, only for the work. They were very prompt to come to my house for an estimate and had the chair back in the promised time frame. I would use them again.

  • It went well.

  • I am happy with the quality of the work, and at the end of the rolled pillow it's centered; they took the time to center the ends of the rolls.
