    J.O. Painting Company Inc.
Over the two week period of the job, Jose and his staff of painters were completely professional and did an outstanding job. Our first encounter with Jose was a walkthrough of the residence to identify the rooms requiring the preparation and painting. Jose was quite thorough in evaluating the rooms, even taking measurements and photos for reference. This resulted in a very detailed proposal and estimate which appeared conveniently as a link in an email. The proposal contained a comprehensive list of rooms and what was to be done to them in a proposal which was neat and orderly. The method of proposal submission which was a hotlink to his website enabled a back and forth text dialogue to clarify any questions i had. His estimate was quite detailed and competitive. Following acceptance of the proposal and a mutually agreed start date, JO Painting crew showed up early and consistently through the two week period. The job addressed first the top floor followed by the main floor and then the basement. Their initial task for each room was the ceiling and wall prepararations. Close attention was paid to the condition of the surfaces such that the actual application of the paint resulted in a very positive outcome. At the end of every work day the crew cleaned up and left the residence in clean and proper condition. At the end of the project, the crew helped in getting the heavier furniture pieces back in place and interacted with us to ensure that there were no problems still outstanding. Finally, I commend Jose and his staff of painters for their due diligence and a job well done.

The bathroom ended up needing to be skim coated as the wallpaper removal had damaged large portions of the walls. Delbert provided an estimate quickly and credited the amount already paid. The work was done over the course of a few days due to needed drying times between skim coat applications. Delbert was knowledgeable, skilled, tidy and very pleasant to work with.

There were the usual unforeseen problems... When Ed went to swap out the vanity, it was clear that the pipes and drain would have to be moved. He took care of that, moved electric wires for the new light fixture, and then had to fix the dry wall everywhere. And of course he cleaned up after himself

I have had a wonderful experience with Christian and his workers. While his prices are in line with other vendors, what truly sets him apart is his integrity, flexibility, and experience. He was easy to communicate with and responded promptly to text messages and phone calls.

Christian is also a home inspector and was able to give me advice about affordable ways to increase the resale value of my home. He and his workers were always willing to take the time to listen to my concerns and my needs. They were mindful of the specific (sometimes irksome) demands of my homeowners association and were able to match paint colors mindfully. They knowledgeably and tactfully steered me in the right direction when I was overwhelmed by decisions.  Most importantly, I trusted them without reservation. Christian was mindful of my budget and repeatedly helped me save money where I could. He worked hard keeping us on schedule. He adjusted the number of workers to the demands of the task and was able to expedite the completion in a timeframe that got me back to
normal life as soon as possible.

His crew is mindful, respectful, and considerate. They always showed up on time with the right tools and left my place clean and functioning as well as possible. I was always able to cook and get through my daily activities while the kitchen was under renovation. His workers communicated well in both English and Spanish. Hector was often in charge and was great to work with. When he set up my induction range, he even set the range?s digital clock! When he was preparing for the pickup of my old kitchen cabinets which were sitting out in my backyard (donatated to Habitiat for Humanity at Christian?s suggestions), he noticed that weeds were coming up through the mulch. Without asking and without billing me for the work, he had my backyard free of weeds in a short time. They are forward thinkers, taking weather conditions into consideration. They have alternate plans for work inside when outside work is not possible. The crew is trustworthy . . . so much so that Hector had a key to my house. I always felt comfortable having them work when I wasn?t there.

I contacted DL Boyd by email on 06/10/15 requesting an estimate to remove the synthetic stucco siding on my home and replace with real portland cement stucco siding.  DL Boyd contacted me back the same day to schedule for an estimator to come out the following week.  I emailed the contact person at DL Boyd back agreeing to the date & time offered as well as asking them to email me the estimate and to answer some additional questions.  The only email response I received was to confirm the estimate appointment time.  The estimator came out on 6/18/15 as scheduled.  On 6/25, a week after the estimator was at my home, I emailed the company requesting a copy of the estimate.  A rep from DL Boyd emailed me a copy of the estimate 5 days after I requested the estimate.  The estimate was as follows:
    1. Protect all exposures
    2. Install scaffold access
    3. Scrape off loose stucco
    4. Apply Stoguard liquid membrane
    5. Install self-furring galvanized metal lath with all related appliances
    6. Apply 3/8" coat portland cement plaster (PCP) "scratch" coat
    7. Apply 3/8" coat of PCP "double" coat-density and moist cure
    8. Apply white floated finish coat - moist cure as needed
    9. Clean up and remove debris
First off, it is not acceptable for a company to delay submitting an estimate to a customer for 12 days from the time the estimate was done (not matter how big the company is.  Second, this estimate is proof in itself of how this company works by basically lumping the work that is necessary (e.g. scaffolding) as part of the bottom line over the top price they are unnecessarily charging.  Third, the Stoguard liquid membrane is not an acceptable product for use as water resistant barrier when installing PCP.  The recommended product by the Portland Cement Association is 2 layers of 60-minute grade D tar paper (and on the east coast the equivalent is building grade felt paper).  Fourth, this company only provides a 1 year warranty on their workmanship.  In terms of concrete and stucco I am fully aware that minuscule cracking and wear will develop over the years (and which adds to the charm of the building), however, a company that charges 6 figures for the work they do should guarantee that their work won't completely break off from the side of someone's home.  In addition, there was no discussion provided by the DL Boyd company as to when work would commence and the length of time required to complete such a project as this.  This company would be suitable for installing EIFS or synthetic stucco siding as they do not want to invest in the time required to install true cement stucco that will last for many decades to come.  I have found the best traditional portland cement stucco company to work with in the whole DC metro area, and it is NOT D.L. Boyd.

Bismarck was always responsive. All work was started and completed within a day or two of notice to proceed. Quality was good. Proposals were thorough. On last phase, the painter got carried away and painted entire banister instead of just touching up post where baby gate was removed. Bismarck recognized the mistake and honored his original estimate.

    JW Home Improvement
When I bought my townhouse five years ago, the previous owner had carefully taped and painted over a rear corner section of the master bedroom closet.  Perhaps this was done to conceal that there was a problem.  The first summer, I began noticing moisture issues in the closet with brown mildew spots on the wall.  I purchased Damp Rid Hanging Mositure Absorber Bags and Closet Dehumidifier containers to keep the moisture in check.  It was rather expensive purchasing these items every few months.    Well, fast forward to the beginning of this year when I noticed the brown spots had enlarged and additionally there were black mold spots.  I knew I needed to do something else and I wasn't sure I needed full-blown mold remediation.  Nevertheless, I contacted a mold inspector and he recommended scraping the wall, applying a solution and repainting.  I was surprised by his recommendation because I believed that, at a minimum, the custom closet shelving and back wall would need to be removed to identify the source of the moisture.  I was not interested in a "band-aid" approach."  I wanted the problem fixed, once and for all.  I took advantage of Angie's List Big Deal coupon for services provided by JW Home Improvement. Jesse is the President of JW Home Improvement and he came to my residence to review my requirements.  I actually had another project I wanted JW to tackle in addition to the closet but Jesse advised the closet would take up most of the day and that was number one on my priority list.  I was placed on JW's schedule for early April.  Cesar arrived early in the morning on the appointed day, looked at the closet, provided me with his findings on the issue and went to Home Depot to purchase necessary supplies.  Cesar removed the custom shelving and back wall and showed me the source of moisture which happened to be a crack from outside and there also appeared to be a roofing problem (which had recently been corrected when roof was replaced).  Cesar applied a solution to clean the mold, removed and replaced the damaged wood, insulation and drywall.  He applied the plaster, painted and re-installed the custom shelving.  He also sealed the crack from outside.  Dust accumulation was kept to a minimum and he used drop cloths in the closet and the bedroom.  Cesar demonstrated good time management skills and he was professional in his approach.  We have had a lot of rain over the past couple months and I see absolutely no signs of moisture intrusion in the closet.   I recommend JW Home Improvement and I plan to use them in the future.

    All American Painting Plus Inc
Promptly at 7 am the workers were ready to work, all very courteous and discreet (I was working at home with my kids). When in doubt the painters will ask my opinion on certain point during the work. For instance telephone wires were coming out of the wall; instead of putting a plate to cover it I preferred to have it covered with plaster altogether. Well that did not work as I lost my telephone line in the process. Verizon came to fix the problem but they had to open the wall which had just been painted. The next day when the painters came back I explain to them about the hole in the wall, they were not annoyed by it and just went to patch it up and repaint the entire wall  again!.
Everything went smoothly, I'll work with Brian McCracken next time I need a paint job.

    Worldgate Plaster & Stucco Co
Worldgate had performed a project for a home owners association in 2012 so we asked them to come back in 2013 to give us a quote on another project.  The owner came out and reviewed the job before Thanksgiving and said he would give us a quote on the job.  I called right before Thanksgiving and he said he just need to obtain a few more costs before he could complete the estimate but it should be out the next day.  We never recieved anything.  I called him multiple times and left messages but he never has returned my call.  It would have been courtious to say he did not want the job instead of not returning a call.  At one point I thought possibly he could be ill and could not answer messages but his voice mail has never been full so he must be picking thme up.

    JW Home Improvement
Based on Angie's list, I contacted them to come out and provide a quote to repair water damage I had in a bedroom closet on the 2nd floor and a wall on the first floor. The leak was caused due to a roofing issue that I was already in process of fixing. The appointment was made and a rep did arrive at the appointment time. He was professional but I immediately got the sense that he was not interested in such a small job. I showed in the area and discussed the cause and what I was thinking. He provided a little feed back and took a couple of pictures. He said it would be a two day job for two men but never said anything about price. He said that he would email me and left. Late I received a quote with a brief description of the work and pictures. No estimate of cost or anything.
Overall, the may be a good company I felt my time was totally wasted. I understand that the job was small and if they are not interested, it would have been better to upfront and say that they are not interested in the project. I will have to caution my friends that JW may not be the right company for them
