D&D Siding And Roofing Specialist Inc
We had been wanting to add some decks and a screened porch to the back of our house for many years. Countless stories from friends about horrible contractor experiences was a big reason it took us so long to do this. It just seemed that so many contractors either do poor work or are just unreliable. I've heard so many horror stories I was dreading the process and expected more of the same. But with D&D its exactly the opposite and I couldn't be happier with the results. We first heard of D&D after finding them here on Angies List. Earlier this year they replaced a window and did some repair work to some siding. I was so happy with their work that I went to their site [*** Link removed ***] and saw that they did so much more than roofing and siding. We were looking to add a screened in porch and deck. This is a much bigger job than the first but since things went so smoothly I figured they would be worth going with on a more involved project. Dale came out to our house numerous times over the spring and summer to work with us. Initially we just had only a vague idea at best of what we wanted and he helped us look at all the possibilities to help us figure it all out. He explained to us how for a little more we could turn the screened porch into a four season room (a sunroom basically) with its own HVAC system. I had never even known we could do this and it made so much more sense. The room has these huge windows where half is screened and slides over horizontally allowing a larger amount of air flow. In warmer weather it'll be like a screened porch but if its too hot (or cold) the room can still be used by closing the windows and turning on the heat or A/C. Its a great option. We eventually decided on this kind of sunroom/porch with an attached deck, a smaller deck off our existing sunroom and a small landing and steps off one of our back doors. Scheduling was perfect. Once the work started, the team was there every day. There was no funny business with saying they would be there and not show up. Two of the main carpenters often worked past dark. I didn't particularly care for such long days for them but they would want to get to a certain point and wouldn't stop early just because it was 5 or 6pm. They are extremely dedicated and hard working professionals. The team was always professional and polite. After being around for 6 weeks you get to know the workers a little and they are just naturally nice people to work with. Great down to earth guys that take pride in their work. Speaking of having pride in your work...I have had new homes built in the past and with new construction there are always things that aren't done perfectly. Thats to be expected; no one is perfect. But sometimes quality suffers and even poor work will be done with hopes that its not caught. Not so with D&D. I have now had time to use my newly constructed areas and can't find anything like this at all and I've looked close. Everything is perfect. The level of craftsmanship is above anything I've ever had done before by any home builder. Its impeccable. The last important thing to mention is that no home improvement job of this scale usually goes without there being some changes or misunderstandings in what is to be done. Maybe its selections on color or materials or the way things are thought to have been agreed on being done. There is both art and science at play in constructing something functional and visually pleasing. The important thing is how does the contractor work through these issues if and when they occur? We had a couple of miscommunications on both sides and they worked with us to reach a good resolution. They are kind and easy people to work with. When you have this level of professionalism towards customer service and quality, you have a winning combination; its as simple as that. You can't go wrong going with D&D. They will be my contractor for all jobs large and small going forward.

First appointment they didn't show. Second appointment they sent a representative woman who was not going to do the work but evaluated the extent of services needed and was supposed to get back to me with a site visit but never called.

    Marked Improvements
We are so pleased we found Mark! From the first conversation, I was so impressed by his professionalism and customer service. He was kind, earnest and detail-oriented. His quote was competitive and his workmanship was great. He did a fantastic job of taking a large room over our garage and making it into two bedrooms. This included building a closet in one room, as well as framing, drywall and painting. We felt completely comfortable having Mark in our home. He was always so nice to be around and did such a good job. We already have him in mind for several more jobs in our home and look forward to working with him again!

    Sidney Enterprises LLC
I found Sidney Enterprises eight months into a year-long home renovation.  During our kitchen remodel, our cabinet designer had recommended them for the install.  Their attention to detail and quality of work during the install led to additional requests for their services.  They ultimately became responsible for the entire kitchen remodel and did a remarkable job.

Chris and Jeff are responsive, reasonably priced, listen to the homeowner's requests and make great recommendations based on the vision for the project.  Two distinguishing factors from previous contractors I've used is that they take a broad view of a project before starting, rather than treating it as something that simply needs to be finished.  This saved time and money in the long run and the results showed the pride they take in their work.  Second, after they start they focus on every small detail.  For instance, they recommended and installed an extra trim piece to make the cabinetry perfectly encase the refrigerator.

The kitchen came out better than I anticipated.  The remodel was challenging and included the removal of a pantry, installing cabinets to the ceiling along uneven walls, plumbing the dishwasher and installing the faucet, installing a range hood that required additional duct work, and installing and grouting a back splash.  Notably, the project involved significant electrical work that neither my electrician nor my appliance installers seemed capable of mastering.

Because of the scope of this home renovation and the amount invested, prior to finding Sidney Enterprises I used Angie's List and tried to find the best electrician/ plumber/ contractor/ framer/ painter to handle each project.  As I used Sidney Enterprises for more of the projects, I began to realize they were outperforming the "best" I had found on Angie's List.  Instead of trying to coordinate a number of contractors' schedules, I coordinated with Chris and Jeff and knew that I was getting the best for each facet of the project.

Over the last eight months, I have used 21 contractors and would put Sidney Enterprises at the top of that list.

We worked together on the overall plan -- layout and sequencing of all work. We ordered custom racking and they did it all. These guys are excellent to work with and everything from just the right stain shade to tile design was expertly managed.

    Loudoun Stairs
UPDATE - May 2012 - We were contacted shortly after the below posting by a Senior Customer Service Director, apologizing for the misstep on the part of the company. He asked if he could come out and meet with us again to discuss what happened. We agreed and must say that Loudoun Stairs has now gone above and beyond to fix our initial experience. Steve Clewis is GREAT and understood our frustration. He worked with us on a solution for installing our stairs. The installer, William Johnson, was AMAZING does incredible work - top notch quality, professional and efficient. Although we had a rocky start with Loudoun Stairs, in the end they rectified the error and we WILL definitely use them again. THANK YOU to all at Loudoun Stairs that in the end made our experience a GREAT one.

March 2012 - Initially ok. We called to request an appointment for someone to come and review our needs. The gentlemen showed up as scheduled, reviewed our requirements and proceeded to tell us that they don't install. What??? A stair company that only builds the stairs and delivers them to your door but won't install - doesn't make sense to me. A week later they provided a verbal quote over phone but NEVER sent to us in writing. We called REPEATEDLY and always only got voicemail and NEVER a return phone call. We then decided maybe we could find our own contractor to install - that proved to be a bit of a challenge, so we called back, finally someone answered the phone and said they could install and they would revise our quote and get it over to us. NEVER got the quote in writing for just the stairs or stairs and install, no return phone call, nothing. We again called repeatedly to find out where our quote was and nobody ever got back to us. Not sure what is going on at Loudoun Stairs but here is my recommendation - if the job is too small, not worth your time or you don't want to work direct with homeowners - then just say so!! We will NEVER use Loudoun Stairs. Customers service and responsiveness are TERRIBLE!!!!

    Walker and Clarke Builders Inc
Donnie Walker was extremely responsive, provided estimate for all work, and was very accomodating when unexpected issues arose (hidden damage uncovered due to water leak and carpenter ant damage when wall removed).  He reevaluated what it would take to fix and offered alternatives to keep the price down.  He was also proactive in pointing out items that could be redone to prevent future issues and giving options on handling them.

His team was very professional, showed up on time, did quality work, and completed work veyr quickly.  They wasted no time in getting the job done.  Donnie oversaw all aspects of the work and constantly monitored the progress.  Pricing was very fair and completely explained on each item.  He was also willing to provide several options on work to meet my budget concerns.  Quality of the work was excellent.  I would recommend him highly and will certainly use him again for my needs.

    Walker and Clarke Builders Inc
Donnie Walker came out and discussed with us at length the goals of the project and then suggested an approach.  He subsequently provided us with an estimate (which he never exceeded in spite of some complications discussed below) and we decided to proceed.  He did the trenching and grading himself and coordinated with excellent subs to do the electricity and insulation.  His guys showed up on time, worked quickly and cleaned up after themselves.

We encountered one unanticipated problem - the foundation of the garage was laid with 8" block, on top of which sat a 6" sill plate with the walls comprised of 2x4s.  If we would have attached the plywood to the 2x4s as planned it would have resulted in the sill plate sticking out a bit and below that the block foundation protruding another 2" into the workout room.  Since the plan was to have judo mats on the floor for part of the room, it would have created  dangerous situation where someone could have struck the block foundation with their head or limb during practice.  We discussed the issue with Donnie and he quickly came up with a solution - he ripped some 2x4s  to extend the sill plate so that it was flush with the block foundation.  He then roughed in another 2x4 wall next to the existing wall so that the plywood would be flush with the foundation.  In spite of this difficulty, the final cost still remained at the estimated price.

We are very happy with the work Walker and Clarke did and in particular with their willingness to work with us in terms of doing this project in stages over a couple of months.
