How to Make Kitchen Appliances Last Longer

    American Home Shield Home Warranty
so far, 3 weeks after first filing a claim, the company is still not honoring their contract to repair or replace. Wait times on hold exceed 2 hours (I gave up after 2 hours). They have sent out repair people who never showed up, repair people who called to tell us they weren't able to work on our brand of stove, one repair person told us parts were no longer available and AHS determined that this repair was "completed". They have a FaceBook page which is rife with negative comments - go read for yourself.

Excellent. Replaced heater element and thermostat (came as a pair). Took him less the 30 minutes. He called ahead to say he was running early (was that alright? Yes.) Gave a 9am to Noon service window. Arrived about 8:50am. Had the part (I gave him the dryer model number two days earlier). It is fixed.

I called and told them what was going on with my dishwasher.  They immediately asked for the make and model number so they could be sure to have the correct parts on the truck when they arrived.  Within a day or two, they were at my home replacing the water pump.  He called to let me know he was on his way, tested the washer multiple times before he left and was exceedingly polite.  I will definitely use them again!

The provider said call Angie's list for a refund. I am on the phone now and Angie's list is finding a replacement HOWEVER I had to put effort and time into this and the provider simply said I don't want this call so I am rejecting the offer in a matter of 30 seconds or less. I needed help. They did took my energy and time and provide not even an acknowledgement that the wronged me.

    Arlington GE Appliance Repair
The provider spent less than 5 minutes at my house.  Told me the vent was blocked and I needed to call the dryer vent people and not appliance repair.  He charged me $100 dollars for that.  I would have expected him to run diagnostics of some sort.  he didn't even pull one single tool out.

I have been  using this contractor (previously called refrigeration systems) since 1999. I always had a good opinion of them.

However this time things were radically different.

At the time of the appointment call, I committed to pay an initial diagnostic fee of $125.

When the technician arrived he very promptly detected the cause of the failure: a blown fuse and to a lesser extent a worn out capacitor.

He them gave a me a quote for these two items as below:

    - Replace capacitor $275.34

    - Replace 2 fuses cartridges $257

    - Diagnostic fee $ 125 ( as agreed during appointment call)

These prices were outrageously inflated. The cost of a fuse is only $3.00 retail. The fuse is accessible without even opening the external heat pump unit. The cost of a capacitor is $35 retail.

I would have expected that as a minimum, the replacement of the fuse would have been included in the diagnostic fee. I refused the price, paid the agreed upon diagnostic fee and changed the parts myself for  less than  $40., a saving of $492

    Apple Appliance Repair - Fairfax
We had two holiday parties, after the first the fridge was warm and freezer was struggling. This was Friday night. Had another party planned for Sunday. Called Apple on Saturday morning and they were at the house within the hour. Tech was nice and everything out and concluded everything was fine just overloaded and too many people had the door open that day. They honored the $60 special and we were done.

    Hoyt Appliance Repair
Mr. Hoyt was very good and came out to us in the evening, which was more convenient for as I commute. He was very willing to work with my old stove and understood that I wanted it repaired to "as good as new" condition. He was able to install the new circuit breaker and cleaned all the circuits and explained how to fix small repairs. I would certainly call him again for any large appliance repair.

    Sterling Appliance
I chose Sterling because it had a solid A rating and were a Super Service Award winner. Unfortunately, this was not my experience with this company.
They arrived promptly for our appointment and were friendly and courteous. They diagnosed my 1-1/2 year old Whirlpool as having a bad motor and said I needed to either buy a new dishwasher or replace the motor. I was told they would call me the next day with an estimate for replacing the motor. The days passed and I called twice requesting the estimate. Each time, the man asked me the same questions, seemed to be writing everything down and told me they would get back to me. They never called.
It's been two weeks and I've called for the third and final time. The man took all the information again (as if he had no recollection of this issue whatsoever) and seemed very annoyed. He said as soon as he hung up with me, he would get the estimate and call me right back. It's a good thing I didn't hold my breath. It has been my experience that appliance repair companies typically will credit the initial diagnostic charge when they perform the actual repair or replacement. Sterling said they would not. After waiting what I feel was an unacceptable amount of time for a call back, this had been the only reason I was waiting for them - so that I could apply my diagnostic fee to my repair.
As a business owner myself, I would never make my customers feel that they are a bother to me and I always get back to them with an answer when I say I will.
I would never use Sterling again nor would I recommend them to anyone.

    Apple Appliance Repair - Fairfax
We noticed a leak coming from the washing machine around 7:00pm on a Monday.  After realizing the leak was beyond our ability to repair, we called Apple Appliance Repair at around 8:00pm.  They were able to schedule a service call for the following evening between 5-6pm, which was very convenient.  During the call we were informed that there was a $60 service call fee that would be applied forward to any repairs made.
We received a call the following afternoon at approximately 4:30pm to confirm the appointment.  Two technicians arrived at approximately 5:30pm.  Both technicians were very polite and professional.
Within a minute of seeing the washing machine (no exaggeration), they had pulled the machine from the wall, tilted it back, and found a leaking drain pump.  The technicians said they had the part in their truck and the repair would cost $189 including parts and labor.  (The total of $195 listed above includes $6 in tax.)  After agreeing to the repair, they retrieved the part and completed the repair in less than 15 minutes.  They were in my home no more than 20 minutes.
Since the technicians left, we've done a load of laundry with no leaks.
I've never had this repair done before and I didn't solicit multiple quotes, but I did some research on the internet after they left.  Based on what others have paid for a similar repair, I feel like I got a competitive price.  While my internet research says that the repair can be done much cheaper if you do it yourself, I also feel like I got a good value for my money because of the professionalism of the technicians and the accuracy and quickness of the diagnosis and repair.
I'm doubly appreciative of Apple's ability and willingness to do service calls in the evening or over the weekend.  I'm definitely willing to pay a premium for a company that's willing and able to give you short windows for your appointment and that will work around our schedule.
