Overall the quality and price of work is pretty good for this company. The office staff was top notch and really helped guide us in design and choosing products. The installers did a good job adapting and overcoming obstacles to make the counter tops look good. However they make a total mess, with granite dust all over the house and don't clean up after themselves (even in their immediate work area). Also they don't do any real finish work (moldings didn't match up to new granite), I would expect spending over $4k that it would be a "turn-key" job. Also they told me that it would only take a 1/2 day, and after showing up an hour late it took almost 3 days. There seems to be bad communication between the estimator and the install crew. Also I was never told that I needed to hire a plumber to reinstall the sinks, again assuming a "turn-key" job.

    Total Home Improvements
After having a good experience with THI on my exterior work five years ago, I've always gone back to them to have other projects done. My experience with this company has been very positive.

The employees of THI are very courteous and professional.  They come on time and with a positive attitude.  The project managers that I worked with (I had the same person for two of my jobs and a different person for this latest huge remodel) were very knowledgeable of every aspect of the job.  They both did a good job scheduling all of the trades workers and keeping everything moving forward.  They both communicated very well with me and I always knew exactly who was coming, what they were coming to do, and when they would be there.  Did everything go exactly on schedule - well no.  I added several changes to the job, including gutting and redoing another bathroom at the last minute.  So we had to adjust time frames and expectations.  When we had a delay in the cabinet installation, due to my decision to rip out old plaster and replace with new drywall, Greg, the project manager worked swiftly and deliberately to catch us back up so we could finish as projected.

THI uses good sub contractors.  The floor, tile, electrical, and plumbing guys rocked.  They use small companies so there isn't a crew coming into your home.  The tile installer works alone.  The electrical company has two employees so the same two come every time and get to know your home electrical system well.  Same with the plumbers and floor installers.  I like that about THI.  Sure it isn't as fast sometimes as if a crew is sent in, but these trades people were truly professional, treating my house like their own.  I believe they did a better job than a bigger company would, and had more pride in their work.  To be honest, the owner of the dry wall company they used for my job was a bit rude, but Total Home Improvements quickly remedied that issue once I let them know.  All of the other sub-contractors were so very nice and professional and respectful.  I feel very fortunate to have met these fine craftsmen.

My experience with the sales representatives has also been very positive.  I used the same sales rep for two of my projects and he partnered with another sales rep on the major interior renovation they just finished.  They worked with me on the design and we made adjustments along the way.

I do not have any experience with the painters, however.  i have a painter that I have used for years (also works alone) so I opted to have him do the painting for my job.

Anyway, I am happy with all the choices I made throughout this renovation and with the work that Total Home Improvements did themselves or had done to make this reno happen.  It was complicated, removing walls and installing engineered beams, etc.  I worked at home throughout the whole reno, so I basically set up in one room.   My advice to anyone considering a renovation is to be very clear in what you want to have done and be very specific in your contract and understand the allowances, etc. in your contract and make adjustments if you need to. I marked mine up on a word document so I could be absolutely sure we were on the same page.  It took several revisions before we finalized the contract.   Also be realistic with your expectations and understand that there will be puts and takes along the way.  Material gets delayed; you make a change and things have to be redone.  Be patient and keep in constant contact with your project manager.  Understand that these people are human too.  The project manager may have a dozen jobs at any given time.

My tape measure broke the other day so I guess their work is done!  But if I have any other home improvements I have Total Home Improvements on my speed dial.  Seriously, it got frustrating at times - it was a 6 month major renovation after all.  But any frustration on my part was situational and the project manager was experiencing the same frustration.  Together we worked through any issues or decisions as they arose.

After the job was complete i'd say it was done pretty close to perfectly.  I have an old house and there's only so much you can do with an old house.  In my opinion Total Home Improvements did as much as could be done to maximize the footprint of my house, updating it from its 1970's look while maintaining the character of the home.

Thanks for reading my review.  I wish you luck in your home projects.

    Total Home Improvements
The overall experience of this remodel effort exceeded our expectations from the professionalism, to the attention to detail, to the high quality finished product. Our sales associate took great pains to find out what our intentions were for a remodel before he wrote up a contract. He wasn't hesitant to point out types of things that might or might not work. Our one learning point was that before signing the contract, make sure both parties are absolutely sure what is and what is not included in the contract. But those differences were minor in the grand scheme of things. We were given generous allowances for tile, granite, and plumbing fixtures. Our sales associate made multiple trips with us to the suppliers to assist us with our selections. The best part of the experience was our project supervisor. He always showed up when he said he would be there and made sure that he was in constant contact with the sub contractors. He insisted on a clean work place. If there was any part of the job that we were unhappy with at the end of a day, he was on it to get it right early the next morning even if it meant bringing the sub contractor with him. He was always in close communication with us checking to see if the job was meeting our expectations. He gave us the heads up if we were coming to the date where we had to make a selection of a tile or mirror or shower doors or accessories. When we gave him a punch list, he started working on it that day and didn't stop until we were satisfied with the finished product. The bottom line is, we ended up with a total bathroom remodel and partial kitchen remodel that exceeded our expectations. The quality of work was outstanding and the finished job was beautiful. We went with Total Home Improvements because 2 of our neighbors had recommended them. In the end, the job came in within our budget and we are a very happy customer. I would highly recommend their services for anyone needing a high quality home improvement job.

They started the job on the date I was promised, they were  always punctual, and did the job in a timely manner.  They were most professional.  I was very happy with the work, loved the design, and was very pleased with my lead man.  They took pride in their work, and always left the place clean when they left.  I got 3 estimates and they were by far the best.   I would definitely use them again.    B L

    HATCHETT DESIGN REMODEL
Did a good estimate that put us into sticker shock a bit. About twice what I wanted to spend. Had two more estimates and a little better but those only included very minimal design with the "design" coming as we select fixtures etc as we go. Hatchett would provide more upfront and product selection ahead of time of construction. We may yet go with Hatchett as we feel we might get a more professional job. Still on hold.

Everything went fine. Cost estimate was in the ballpark of others, but all three estimates received seemed much higher than what I think it should be. May have to come to grips soon or do it my self. So, expect to bite the bullet soon and select one of the three. This man was on time, did a good review with me and got back with an estimate within 2-3 days. Overall, he was very professional and I believe he would do a very fine job.

    Overall it went great!
We obtained several estimates for our projects.  THI gave us the BEST estimate and they made us feel as if we were their top priority project.  They were so patient with us, showing us prior projects that they had completed, taking us places to pick out our granite, and bringing us over SEVERAL cabinet doors different color and styles.  It took us (me) forever to decide. We (I) must have changed our mind at least a dozen times and they were not only patient but gave us the pros and cons on each choice.
We encountered a problem with the floor and the owner took time himself to crawl under our house, go up in the attic and spend over 2 hours at our house trying to give us the best advise.
Joe was our project officer for the patio and Barry was our project officer for the Kitchen. I would have questions that I could not lay to rest and would text Barry on a Saturday or maybe even a Sunday and he pantiently and promtly would reply back.  He was professional, and kind.  He tried to always make me happy even if it meant to change a wine wrack to shelves, or an 18 inch light to a 24 inch light, or the light over the sink.
Their electrician Ricardo did superb work.  Their tile layer, Wilson was accomodating and did flawless tile work.  Their painter Kenny did such a great job that we hired him to paint the rest of our celings. My husband and I have never seen a better painter, a little expensive but high quality/perfect results.
Their project coordinator, Carol, become part of our daily contacts.  She devoted countless hours to our project to ensure it went smooth, all our needs were met and everyone on the team did their part. She was the core of the project; an  amazing woman!
We feel we have made  life long friends who will help us with any home project we may have in the future.  We don't have to worry about them taking advantage of our money.  My husband and I would HIGHLY recommend this company, it's a family owned business that treats their customer as their own family.  Thank you THI team!

    Criner Remodeling
Criner Remodeling was one of 6 estimates I eventually received. I first contacted them in April 2012 via their website. In July I received a postcard, which may or may not have been a mass mailing. I called them again in September after the contractor I had selected had a conflict and could not do my job as scheduled. A Criner salesman returned my call. The salesman said they had never received my query via their website. He suggested the website had malfunctioned since it was new at that time. He did not know if the postcard was targeted or a mass mailing. We made an appointment for an estimate. Since our appointment was on a federal holiday, he said he would have to confirm it and would verify it with me the next day. He did not confirm the appointment with us until 4 days later, the day of the appointment, then he was 30 minutes late. He was very polite, but he wanted a $500 design fee to give me more than a ball park estimate of $50,000 to $70,000, and he told us that we would have to wait 3 months or so before they could start our job. He also insisted that we have our 1973 house tested for lead (rightfully so) and preferred that we use their certified lead tester, who would charge $300. Since the other 5 estimates ranged from $18,000 to $36,000, we decided not to use Criner's services. We also had the proposed remodel area tested for lead for $100 by a certified lead tester. (Our certified lead tester charged $100 for the first room/area and $20 a room after that so if we had needed to test the entire house, it would have cost us $300. The law says you only have to test the area being disturbed.)

Erik was prompt and professional. His estimate was actually the lowest one; however, I had a few peculiar things with my cabinets that his cabinet maker was not able to accomodate, but I would highly recommend starting with Erik.

    Anything Tile LLC
Dan Jones and Randy from Anything Tile did an awesome job on our kitchen remodel. Five months ago we experienced a busted pipe in the kitchen which led insurance to discover Mold. The process of restoring our kitchen has been long and tedious. Anything Tile was like a breath of fresh air after all of the contractors we had dealings with. Dan came to our home in Poquoson VA at the end of June to give us an estimate. He was interested, didn't rush us, looked at the job site and he was also punctual in showing up. He said he would get me an estimate by the following day and he did exactly what he said he would do. The price of $750 for the job was with us purchasing the materials. I feel it was a very fair price for the work entailed. They patiently waited for us to be ready for the tiling. Four months later he was very flexible in working out an install date for us. Dan and Randy showed up 10 minutes early. They prepared the room to safely install the tile without damaging anything surrounding the work area. They worked from 9am to 4pm and got the job done. They cleaned up after themselves and at the end I have a beautiful kitchen. It was actually very calming having them in our home. They politely asked if they could play music while they worked and after we said we didn't mind at all they put on some music that was exactly to our tastes. Randy stated that they're pretty good at gauging the kind of music the customer might enjoy. There was no drama during the day, they really seemed to thoroughly enjoy their work.
I would hire them in a heartbeat for another job in the future. We're very happy customers.
