The good, these guys do a good job cutting and prepping the counter-tops. The Bad, they leave your house in a mess. They don't clean up after themselves, granite dust, wood chips and other debris all over. They can't even reinstall the drawers that they take out to work. They also took down 3 large mirrors in the bathroom and left them for me to put back. Not only did they break my cherry vanity but they also left a gap in my kitchen counter large enough to stick my finger in. After explaining to them that I was not planning on painting the walls, they still tore up the sheet-rock and didn't cut the back-splash high enough to cover the old one. For $3620 you would expect a professional finished job, but I had to go behind them and do a lot of work myself.

JT Askew Drywall and Plaster Repairs
JT and his team have an eye for detail. They spotted minor flaws I overlooked and now my walls are all smooth and blemish free. 25 years worth of dents, dings, nail pops, and wall hanging scars throughout my house are all gone in 2.5 days. The new paint will look so much better over the improved surfaces. The team, Denise and Monty, worked great together. The clean-up at the end exceeded my expectations. Don't try to do drywall yourself, hire an experienced professional to get the best results.

Overall the quality and price of work is pretty good for this company. The office staff was top notch and really helped guide us in design and choosing products. The installers did a good job adapting and overcoming obstacles to make the counter tops look good. However they make a total mess, with granite dust all over the house and don't clean up after themselves (even in their immediate work area). Also they don't do any real finish work (moldings didn't match up to new granite), I would expect spending over $4k that it would be a "turn-key" job. Also they told me that it would only take a 1/2 day, and after showing up an hour late it took almost 3 days. There seems to be bad communication between the estimator and the install crew. Also I was never told that I needed to hire a plumber to reinstall the sinks, again assuming a "turn-key" job.

    Total Home Improvements
After having a good experience with THI on my exterior work five years ago, I've always gone back to them to have other projects done. My experience with this company has been very positive.

The employees of THI are very courteous and professional.  They come on time and with a positive attitude.  The project managers that I worked with (I had the same person for two of my jobs and a different person for this latest huge remodel) were very knowledgeable of every aspect of the job.  They both did a good job scheduling all of the trades workers and keeping everything moving forward.  They both communicated very well with me and I always knew exactly who was coming, what they were coming to do, and when they would be there.  Did everything go exactly on schedule - well no.  I added several changes to the job, including gutting and redoing another bathroom at the last minute.  So we had to adjust time frames and expectations.  When we had a delay in the cabinet installation, due to my decision to rip out old plaster and replace with new drywall, Greg, the project manager worked swiftly and deliberately to catch us back up so we could finish as projected.

THI uses good sub contractors.  The floor, tile, electrical, and plumbing guys rocked.  They use small companies so there isn't a crew coming into your home.  The tile installer works alone.  The electrical company has two employees so the same two come every time and get to know your home electrical system well.  Same with the plumbers and floor installers.  I like that about THI.  Sure it isn't as fast sometimes as if a crew is sent in, but these trades people were truly professional, treating my house like their own.  I believe they did a better job than a bigger company would, and had more pride in their work.  To be honest, the owner of the dry wall company they used for my job was a bit rude, but Total Home Improvements quickly remedied that issue once I let them know.  All of the other sub-contractors were so very nice and professional and respectful.  I feel very fortunate to have met these fine craftsmen.

My experience with the sales representatives has also been very positive.  I used the same sales rep for two of my projects and he partnered with another sales rep on the major interior renovation they just finished.  They worked with me on the design and we made adjustments along the way.

I do not have any experience with the painters, however.  i have a painter that I have used for years (also works alone) so I opted to have him do the painting for my job.

Anyway, I am happy with all the choices I made throughout this renovation and with the work that Total Home Improvements did themselves or had done to make this reno happen.  It was complicated, removing walls and installing engineered beams, etc.  I worked at home throughout the whole reno, so I basically set up in one room.   My advice to anyone considering a renovation is to be very clear in what you want to have done and be very specific in your contract and understand the allowances, etc. in your contract and make adjustments if you need to. I marked mine up on a word document so I could be absolutely sure we were on the same page.  It took several revisions before we finalized the contract.   Also be realistic with your expectations and understand that there will be puts and takes along the way.  Material gets delayed; you make a change and things have to be redone.  Be patient and keep in constant contact with your project manager.  Understand that these people are human too.  The project manager may have a dozen jobs at any given time.

My tape measure broke the other day so I guess their work is done!  But if I have any other home improvements I have Total Home Improvements on my speed dial.  Seriously, it got frustrating at times - it was a 6 month major renovation after all.  But any frustration on my part was situational and the project manager was experiencing the same frustration.  Together we worked through any issues or decisions as they arose.

After the job was complete i'd say it was done pretty close to perfectly.  I have an old house and there's only so much you can do with an old house.  In my opinion Total Home Improvements did as much as could be done to maximize the footprint of my house, updating it from its 1970's look while maintaining the character of the home.

Thanks for reading my review.  I wish you luck in your home projects.

    Mares Contracting
Mike was on time, professional, polite, and knowledgeable.  He took many measurements, asked questions, and took extensive notes.  I appreciated the attention to detail.  He provided a detailed estimate just a few hours after he came to my home, which was great.  I asked a lot of follow-up questions which he responded to promptly and completely.  In the end we needed to scale down the scope of the work we could have done all at once and we decided to go with other contractors because we had a very tight window of time in which to get the work done (not at all Mares' fault and Mike was willing to do as much as he could to get the work completed within our timeframe, which I also appreciated).  I hope to be able to work with Mares in the future!

    Professional Wallpapering by Anita
It went very well, although Anita had some difficulty removing the paper because the walls were not "prepped" by the people who originally put the paper up.  The wallpaper stuck to the drywall, which meant a lot of sparkling needed to be done.  That was not Anita's fault.  She recommended the type of primer to use before we painted, so everything worked out well.
This is the first time that we used Anita and I found her to be very professional and knowledgeable about her craft.  I would recommend her and I would use her again.

    Bast Floors & Staircases
Awesome Company to work with. I had them put in marble tiles in LR, a Walnut curved staircase, and a beautiful new kitchen from floor to ceiling. Crews were all well-mannered, and mostly very considerate of my needs and possessions. The Company has stood behind everything, taking care to perform all details in a timely fashion. I could not be more pleased. Although the remodeling tasks performed were expensive, they were fairly priced for all that was required and the quality of work performed and materials used. The logistics of coordinating tasks requiring multiple crews was extremely well done, between tilers, carpenters, electrician, plumber, sheet rock installers, granite installers, and final appliance installer, and painter. We also had demolition performed so old could be repurposed and old granite counter re-cut for new use elsewhere. Awesome Company!

    Power House Painting
Wash went pretty good. Punctual, friendly, etc. After water dried, had to call back due to black residue/mildew remaining on trim and gutters on north side. He promptly returned and rewashed the areas I pointed out. House does look better for price paid. Hard to tell where some dirt remains while still wet, but more care to insure it was cleaned right would have saved both our time.
Not very satisfied with cost estimate that was done by a third person that did based estimate on information relayed by the supervisor. Economy for size of job I suppose. Cost estimate for extra rot of trim and soffit and paint shutters, was very expensive and I am waiting for another estimate. Estimate was 3-4 times what I think it should be. Will see. If that much by both estimators, I will do easy parts myself and get another estimate for just the upper areas.  Extra high cost estimates by contractors in this area are the norm in my experience. Overall fairly satisfied.

    Price Electrical Inc
Courteous and professional response fixing several problems.  Travis explained what type of ceiling fans I needed to purchase  and when I said I would race to the store and get them promptly, there was a question about whether the work could be completed that day.  Skip, the owner, asked me to call him when I had purchased the fans and then said a crew could indeed do the work that day.  Two workmen arrived after lunch and went to work. They explained that the mount in the ceiling was not correct for a ceiling fan-it was for a light fixture-so they would have to install a correct mount.  Later on I saw the funny commercial about the ceiling fan flying out the window and I thought, Yep, that's what happens when your ceiling fan is not properly installed!  Skip came by in the afternoon to check on things and all in all, I spoke with 4 members of the crew-all professional and courteous.  You just don't mess around  with electrical work and, as we are getting our house ready to sell, you want to make sure you use professionals.  I highly recommend Price Electric, Inc.

    Closet Concepts
After seeing the other good reviews of Closet Concepts, we decided to give them a try.  We just moved into our home and badly needed the master bedroom closet reorganized.  Initial meetings with Mr. Baker were good.  He quoted us the price up front and provided us with some drawings of what the closet would look like.  However, it took a couple requests to get the drawings.  We had a scheduled install date, and when we confirmed this date, Mr. Baker told us it would actually be two days, one day for demo, one for installation.  Not a huge deal, but we had some schedule rearranging to do to make this happen.  Mr. Baker's associate arrived on demo day and removed old shelving and closet pieces, mudded and sanded the walls.  Where shelves and previous closet parts were removed left indentations in the wall, markings, and what looked like cardboard exposed.  Our mud room which we were also having redone looked the same.  They proceeded to install the closet system the next day and all the ugly wall marks were left as is and large areas of chipped dry wall and unfinished wall were left.  Mr. Baker stated that most of his clients didn't mind because clothes would be in there anyway.  After paying thousands, I highly doubt anyone would be happy with how the walls looked.  Had we known they weren't going to mud and sand properly, we would have done it ourselves in between demo and installation, but they never told us this.  My husband ended up doing this himself anyway and then painting the entire closet.  In the end, the closets are not great.  Some things just don't make sense, like why the shelves don't extend closer to the edge of the wall or to the top of the ceiling.  There's a big crack in one of the pieces, it took weeks to get a door that arrived in the wrong color and then arrived damaged and had to be reordered.
I also didn't appreciate Mr. Baker's lack of professionalism around my house.  The garage door was open while his associate was removing old closet parts.  Mr. Baker arrived later and just walked in my garage and into my house!  I have a front door with a door bell.  Then his associate left for lunch and he followed shortly after and left my garage door open, front door unlocked, and never even let me know he was leaving.  He did this on the final day of install too.  He was done and just left the house.  Didn't even say anything, or ask me to look at the finished product.  He said he couldn't find me.  Well, I was upstairs with my child.  I don't think he looked or called.  I had to end up calling him to ask what the deal was.  I don't think someone who takes pride in their work just slips out of your house when they're done.
Closet Concepts charges a high price for mediocre work and finished products.
