Michael Nash Design Build & Homes

My porch is even more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Working with the design staff of Michael Nash prior to the start of the construction was such a pleasure.

Being able to choose all the materials for the project at their showroom and knowing that all permitting and site inspections would be handled entirely by Michael Nash was a definite plus.

The crews that worked on the project were dependable with an excellent work ethic.  At the end of each day, they made sure that the site was cleared of any debris.  Staff from Michael Nash made several site visits to assure the project was moving along and being completed per specifications.

    A & L Construction
Called in mid July to get an estimate2c Keith came over and I told him what I thought we wanted and our budget He was impressed that I was at least in the ball park. We also wanted a short turn around if we used A and L, like three weeks due to extended family coming in. We signed a contract about July 5th and Keith squeezed us in to get this done by August 6. Earl and his son came the first day and had the decks all down in less than a day I have yet to find a nail left anywhere. Earl is a craftsman, the work is all we expected and this guy pretty much single handily built this to include putting the roof on alone. During his short breaks I would talk with him, he really loves to work with wood. He provided a suggestion on the location of the door and it is perfect. I also paid extra for lattice to be installed not to hard to do yourself but no way would it have come as good as they did and he even put a door on for me. A nice small touch. Earl gets 5 STARS! The electrician was extra that was about another two thousand, I thought that was a little high but Keith and Earl both recommended him. Miguel added two GFI outlets as well as installed an outdoor ceiling fan. His work was just fine as well. We have basically lived on the new screened in deck. Only thing missing is an outdoor TV but that is coming soon.

    Total Remodeling Systems

Life is too short to deal with this company.  Life is also too short to explain in detail all that took place.  We meet with them several times and they explained how well they communicate and how strong their quality control program is and how experience they were.  We worked up an agreeable design.  We bought what they said and signed a contract for over $100,000. We made a big mistake.  We were extremely disappointed.  They were to complete the project within three months but almost a year later they finished.  They did not live up to the sales pitch and it?s seems nothing went right.  We were extremely frustrated and disappointed. I cannot recommend this company.

Michael Nash Design Build & Homes
I have put a deposit down to cover some stuff they have had to order for me. I have checked pricing with at least two other providers from Angie's List and Michael Nash was better. What was better was the price and the fact that they listened to me and paid attention to what I wanted. They were very willing to work on kitchen design project and they are willing to give excellent suggestions. I hope everything goes as well as the design looks. They have been in touch with me every other week and are prompt for our appointments and always on time. I have dealt with four or five people from this company and they have all been extremely professional and very helpful.

    Screen Doctor LLC
I hesitated to call due to some older Angie's List reviews that stated it was hard to contact the business. Once I realized that there are very few companies doing screened porch repair in Northern VA, I called and left a message anyway. Dwayne returned my call the afternoon of the same day that I called him. He gave me several quotes based upon materials used for the trim and completed the job with quality and on schedule. He even offered to pick up my special order screen door at Lowe's. I found Dwayne to be pleasant, prompt and an excellent craftsman. I couldn't be happier! Also, I would ask that people who contact The Screen Doctor be patient about returned calls. This is a low-volume, high-quality repair business. He usually returns phone calls during the evening of the day you call, since he doesn't have a receptionist.

    Moss Building & Design
We met with the salesman on 6/29/13 and reviewed our project ideas; remodeling two bathrooms into one, adding a new bathroom, enclosing a screened in porch and minor renovation of several areas of our older home.   Over the next 30 days, we have gotten three dates, starting with 6/14, for receiving an estimate and designs for our project.  As each date passed, my follow-up emails were responded to timely with another delivery date.  We have been patient and understand that contractors are often quite busy, but the three other contractors we have contacted were able to at least deliver an estimate in a reasonable amount of time (1 or 2 weeks).
We finally received a detailed quote on 8/1, but no drawings were ever received as stated in the accompanying message.  A followup email  requesting clarification on the project design has not generated a response.
Due to repeated poor response, we have decided to use another contractor.

Champion Windows and Home Exteriors of Baltimore
This  service provider lacks greatly in project management and logistics for their customers.   The main reason we chose Champion was because they assured us they could help solve the issue we had with our existing patio door which was had not been  installed correctly and needed to be replaced (rotted wood around frame).   So we decided to put in the sunroom.
Once the work started the circus began.   There were issues with not having enough or wrong pieces of supplies ( shingles, pieces of glass,  wrong size wood , told we were going to use their latest style of footers ).
The biggest issues though were the lack of coordination for two main pieces of the work:
     1.  The door installers and the room installers:  Neither wanted or were prepared to do the work until I call the project manager.  The work was done but definitely could have been done more effectively. Offered to make changes but we said we are done with that piece.
      2. The cement patio installers and the room installers: The stair platform was in place before the grading could be done for a stamped patio.  There was no logical way a small backhoe could work around a wood frame. Framing had to be redone. Also platform was made a little larger. Project manager was upset he was not informed.  Issue is between he and the sub doing the patio work to keep up to date - not the customers issue.
There were also other issues: not filling in around the footers once the ground settled,  not cleaning up the environment after work was finally completed ect.
We did meet with the salesman, his supervisor and the project manager for final walk-through and payment.  They outlined the EXTRA work they did at no cost.  We offered to pay as the items came up. Some we weren't aware of until the end.  They said it was because of the other issues they felt it was compensation for the issues above.   We were compensated with a deduction for the wrong footers and cancelling skylights and will receive a gift certificate to a restaurant.   Not enough really for the 6 week ordeal but its completed.  Not planning to recommend to friends.

    Patio Enclosures
The salesperson was extremely helpful and went out of his way to explain the entire process.  In addition, we've asked the staff at the Lorton office for recommendations as to how to attach curtains etc. in the sun room and they were more than helpful.

    Oak Hill Building & Remodeling
I really like the way Oak Hill does business. Some contractors quoted us a lump sum. Some give us a single dollar figure for allotment for fixtures, tub, toilet, cabinets, lights, fan, sinks etc. Oak Hill gave us specific allotments for each major item. So for each item we chose we knew exactly how much we had available to spend. If we chose a more expensive cabinet, we knew in advance exactly how much we had increased the total cost by. And for any increase we  could offset it by choosing a less expensive item from one of the other allotments. There were no surprises!
Nick Vitale was our primary contact, and was  a great help in steering us to to appliances that would keep us within our budget. He was over once or twice a day to check on the work. If I emailed him or called him with a question he usually got back to me within 5 to 10 minutes.
Joaquin was our foreman, and was here all day long. He and his crew are hard workers and very conscious of quality. As the work progressed, both he and Nick made suggestions to improve the lay out of the tile, the paint scheme, the location of the outlets, etc. As I was at home, there were no delays in getting any questions answered and it kept the project moving along. We were extremely pleased with the result of the master bath, so much so that we recommended Oak Hill Construction to several close friends.
I never hesitated to leave the house to go to the grocery etc. while the crew was here. I would just let them know so they would be sure to lock up. By the time our first project was done, I felt like Nick had become family.
Then when our basement got flooded, we again called Oak Hill. This time we did not get quotes from any one else as we were so pleased with the quality and cost of the work performed on the master bath. Again we had an excellent experience.
Most recently, Oak Hill built a screened porch on our existing deck. We are thrilled with the result.
We have a fourth project in mind for 2013, and fully intend to use Oak Hill for that one also.
Overall, I would suggest getting several quotes. You may find that some of the bigger companies have such high overhead that they price themselves our of the business. You may find that some have lower prices, but check their references for the quality of the work performed. Then meet with Nick Vitale from Oak Hill. I don't think you will find a more dedicated  contractor, and I don't think you will find a crew that will provide a higher quality project for you.

Atlantic Deck & Home Renovation Inc
We are so pleased with our porch and with everyone from Atlantic. What began as an idea for a simple sliding door replacement with some new steps to the backyard grew into the beautiful porch we have today. Once we decided to have a porch built instead of steps, we consulted Angie's List for the names of several contractors. We invited them to bid on our project and decided Atlantic Deck Co. was the best one for our project. One thing that was also important to us was that the contractor had their own crews instead of using subcontractors although they do subcontract the electrical work. Atlantic took care of all the paperwork for our HOA and managed the permits and inspections. Chris, Zeth and Cody were always easy to talk to whenever we had questions and gave us good suggestions for the porch and deck. Cody was on the site almost every day to oversee the work and take care of day to day issues or questions. The crew was very polite and worked hard. One day we spotted one of the roofers climbing up to the main roof and found out he had seen a loose shingle and went up to fix it! We didn't even know it was there but really appreciated his extra efforts on our behalf. The patio door we ordered was a bit smaller than the previous one but Atlantic trimmed it out in a beautiful molding that looks even better than before. Every day the work site was left in good order and debris was picked up promptly. This contractor is busy and justifiably so. Our porch project was a great experience from start to finish. Last but not least, our new gates look so nice. After removing the old rotted gates, Atlantic installed new posts and built beautiful new gates on either side of the yard.
