Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia - Arlington to Haymarket
The technician was able to replace the mixing valve in the shower faucet but it took the entire two hours to do that; part of the time was examining the job and going to the hardware store to get the parts. After the valve was changed and the technician moved on to the shut off valves for the toilets he realized he did not get everything he needed to do the job. He said it was his fault because he did not inspect the current valve assembly close enough and needed to return to the hardware store to get the correct parts. He gave me the invoice for work performed; total invoice was $446.45. Labor was $294 for two hours and parts cost $152.45. Handyman charges $116.00 per hour of labor and bills parts at cost plus a markup of what I computed to be between 80% and 100%. I can't say for sure what the markup is but after pricing the parts on Home Depot's website, I estimated the parts to be about $75. The work was good though it took the technician two hours for about 30 minutes of actual plumbing work. My main complaint is the exorbitant price for a job that was fairly simple. I will not use this company again.

    Mike Fusco Builder
I called Mike for a quote on a residential living room addition. He was quick to reply, professional and punctual on our agreed date of meeting. He was easy to talk to and had a great wealth of information on building and met all of my requirements. I appreciate his understanding with my limited amount of free time (full time working mom of two kids, one a 6 month old) and the ease of being able to get in contact with him at any time. He was able to give great recommendations for the construction job and a ball park estimate. We are waiting to decide on what direction to go with the build currently but if we are able to afford Mike's level of craftsmanship I know we will be happy with him as our contractor.

    DW Lloyd Home Services
This company was one of the better I've worked with on communication, honesty and costs, after receiving 5 estimates from others. We converted from carpet to wood and it turned out beautiful. He was careful, clean and very friendly. He went above his duties on bathroom project, helping out with plumbing and backup issues. I was very happy with his wirk and will use him again . He came highly recommended by another homeowner in our HOA.

Arrived promptly as scheduled.  Determined work and materials that was needed and gave me price. I accepted (it was exactly what I thought it should be). He asked if I wanted it done that day and I said yes. He left to go get materials needed and was back within an hour.  Probably took 2- 21/2 hours to complete.  He was very thorough and did not cut corners.  He even primed the fascia board before applying 2 coats of paint. I asked if everything else looked good up there, and he said yes.  Very pleased with the whole experience, and the work was great.  He'll be returning for a couple other things that need attending to.  Prices are fair and reasonable.  I like that unlike the other handyman services I contacted, he doesn't price by the hour; gives you a price and then does the work.

    Top Dog Professional Handyman Svcs
Great!  - very professional, responsive and on time to the job. The work was excellent and reasonable in total cost. I had high expectations and they met them. They even gave a few good suggestions to help me finish the project.
    I would absolutely recommend them.

    Two By Four Construction LLC
We should have drawn up a contract. Owner & his son  particularly intelligent w/some decent manners & foreman has a very kind & helpful side to him -he should strengthen. Sequence of Events Purchased Angie's List Deal in March. 2 By 4 Construction owner came out. Gave very promising image of success & attentiveness. Vast knowledge of many things, esp. old-school methodologies. Called 3-4 mos later, when ready. Did not respond.  Should have been checking-in w/us. Tried, again, texting & phone. No response. Emailed him a detailed letter, alluding to a compromised rating that he had recently received. Finally responded- made excuses. Showed phone data - apologized. Work Needed #1) Adding doors between an ofc. & bdrm. #2)  Building a home recording studio. Due to owner extensive research on building home recording studios, did'nt replace him w/another Angie's List contractor. Lack of Attention to Customer Requests: 1) Requested #1job to be done 1st. Requested doors ordered many times. Discussed need, extensively. Specifically, asked to measure opening. When arrived, doors not ordered. Crew proceeded w/complicated, very involved #2 project, instead ? I?ve had to do financial bills on the kitchen table! 2)Critical preparatory work was lacking - time wasted, causing disappointment. Planning out the "scope" of the job, at the onset, would help, tremendously.  Attempted to address lapse reg. doors w/the owner. Said, ?I never measured the door opening?. Hmm? "No records". Relying on memory. They gave us an extra man for the Angie's List week, which appeared to truly be out of kind our finances were tight. Interestingly, the Foreman was grumbling in resistance to the owner's kindness. Lack of Proper Preparation: *Reg. soldering vs. screw-in hardware,  Foreman complained, twice. Why? Talked to the owner a couple times, to know what to order -should have talked to the vendor, himself.  Now, job is more difficult & time-consuming, which costs us more labor & complaints too! No big deal, if an isolated lack of diligence, esp. in light of much time on the phone w/Gary, discussing the project, which I think is an excellent service. Good Intentions w/o Due Diligence 1) Contractor claimed skill proficiency in setting up a recording studio. Said could probably work out a cheaper solution for us on, practically, everything. Really appreciated this. Yet, reg. soundproof windows, lost time, momentum & positive attitude of crew. Lack of proper planning resulted in complete stop of work for an extended period of time. His window "option" was a 6-week delivery time. My research revealed it would not work, but would greatly compromise all other "sound barrier" work- 2 wks. loss of time to find another workable solution. Ordered soundproof  window from vendor to arrive in 4 wks. Owner's positive attitude to save us $, w/o diligence to protect the progress of the project, is not very positive in the long run, time-wise, expense-wise, or regarding staff morale.  2) Reg. soundproof Doors, owner had ordered the wrong size. Had to wait 2 weeks longer for doors. 3) If it could take weeks to get soundproof windows & doors ordered, why did the contractor not make sure to order before any work began?; Disrespect For Our Belongings 1) We ?had? a very nice carpet in the recording room, that was one carpet piece w/the den & stairs. They, initially tried to protect & cover it, then stopped protecting it from the dirt & work compounds, altogether. Found green glue on it in 3 places. It was because of the quality of the studio room rug that we were waiting on replacing the entirety of the rug in the basement, despite 2 stains in the den that I felt I could deal with. When I brought the green glue concern to the owner's attention, he said they would replace it, if needed. The whole carpet had sheet rock on it all. Now there is compound & green glue on the studio rug, in comparison to its previously great condition. Dirt in carpets break down fibers when walked on. They created a very definite path across the den rug to the recording room. Appears that they dragged the sheet rock or other items across it! Discovered that their solution was to offer a "used" rug of theirs to replace our whole studio room rug. Clearly, their choice, their color - used! Son had told me that the whole rug area in the basement should be the same rug, before our carpet was ever damaged, contradicting his words. We were not ready for a whole basement overhaul. We are now, ready or not. 2) Had moved all instruments to opposite side of the basement to protect from any unavoidable mess. Although sunny weather & flat stone surface outside, they cut Sheetrock inside the house, right by the clean music equipment -Whole basement was covered with it, not to mention dust being the worst thing for our electronics!  3) Basement a mess for 5 ½+ mos w/o finishing the job, stringing out the work that could have been done in 2 ½ mos, max. w/attentive planning.  4) Blocked doorway to storage for weeks w/ supplies, trim,& trash 5) When asked to resolve the need for access to storage, unbeknownst to us, put our wood doors out in the winter weather. Discovered this a week later.  Could have easily put them in the storage area (that they blocked) 6) Owner & staff had "no record" of where they put wires in the wall, so foreman had to guess where to cut out holes to put in the wall plates- 2 wrong guesses cost time & compromise to the sound barrier wall we paid for them to put in 7) Foreman put XLR wall plate in the wall, uneven with the top of the wall socket, & was negative when I asked him to redo it right. He still did it crooked. Disrespect For Me 1) Foreman, just walked out - only been at the hs. a few min. When he came back, explained things were never going smoothly, they never got anything done. Seemed directed towards me. Not holding himself/others accountable for their lack of professional focus on the project 2) Unnecessarily, cut holes in the wall in wrong places -"no record" of work done 3) Vendor?s error w/wrong window size 4) Damage to our rug 5) Their mistake on installing trak Lighting ? had to correct curve 6) Foreman took posture to interrupt critical problem-solving discussion between the son & myself, twice, regarding wiring, Once complaining,"I don't get paid enough for this kind of thinking!" Not said as a joke. Son allows it. Possibly Overcharged! One vendor window was made wrong. Son corrected Foreman for trying to cram it into the opening, anyway. Distracted by this & other big concerns, I made requested payment for $2000+ expense, asking why it was so high. Said amount included doors. Tired, I did not realize he did not have a receipt for hours & doors to confirm the amount. Texted him to get receipt - no response. Broke their accountability protocol w/me.  Did he overcharge us? Poor Attention To Workmanship. Lacked Attitude of Excellence: The foreman & owner's son were planning on putting in the other soundproof window. Yet, seemed to be ignoring the fact that the wood between these 2 soundproof windows remained unfinished.  Learned from the son that the rough openings should have been finished out, before I ever gave measurements to the vendor.  I had talked with the owner about the new plan, more than once. If he had been keeping close tabs on the progress of the project & had a completion record to go along with an established scope, then he could have alerted me to this need and sent someone out to finish out two window openings. The windows seals will not have a professional look, due to this oversight, unless someone figures out a way to repair, after the fact. Lying?! We set up the next day, Friday, to finish work. Foreman said their schedule was clear!  Texted me late in the evening to say"forgot" they had work to do until 12:00. Tried to find out where they were by 12:30 pm. Did not text back until 1:31 pm, saying, "We are stuck in Arlington dieto to weather" ("due to weather"). My husband was in Springfield, Va, & my contractor friend was in DC, at that exact time of day. There was no traffic-hindering weather in the city of Arlington in between. Had checked the weather forecast - cloudy! Never showed up or called back! On Final Day These two men came out the following January 15.  A discussion broke out about the sequence of events around preparing the window openings. 1) I learned why there were ?cuts? into the framing ? Foreman careless use of Sheetrock blade.  2) Checked if the son remembered how the wires were to be hooked up to the wall plates. Son had forgotten! Was going to hook the wires up in a different configuration -"no records" of the information we pd them, both, at $65.00/hour to resolve w/he hi-tech vendor consult by phone 3) Asked son to show foreman location of wires behind the walls, so not be cutting through sound barrier wall a 3rd time, mistakenly, due to the Foreman having "no records" of what they had done, months before."Son" didn't know, either! I released them. Told the son I had written a review. Son put away complaining, arguing, blame-shifting, listened & apologized. I appreciate how candid he was. Made excuse, saying ?This is the 1st time I?ve heard of this,? Their lack of regard for our wishes about our rug, - trying to slip a "used" rug into a purpose greater than control room purpose, to rectify our damaged one, is one such example of their track record concerns I bring up. Why Put Up W/Them So Long? 1) Respected Angie's List "A" grade for 3 yrs 2) Owner said knew how to put in recording studio. Exact skill wanted most. 3) Angie's List reputation where I had worked w/4 other excellent contractors, for past 2 yrs.  4) Too challenged w/holiday prep. to change contractors 5) Project & assimilating of our children to a totally new school sys. challenging enough. Had to focus on researching windows & doors, as they took 4-6 weeks to be delivered.  6) 2-By-4 Contractors midway wiring work, best not to switch out.

    Vetbuilder.com
Vetbuilder.com was referred to me by a friend who had used them.  I contacted and was extremely pleased with the entire process from start to finish.  Probably the most punctual and communicative contractors I have ever used.  I have called them since this big project for various handyman things I have needed done around the property and will certainly continue calling them anytime a need arises.

We really liked Carlos but Carlos had forgotten his tarps on the day he sanded our floor and the fine sawdust from sanding the floor was EVERYWHERE.   All over the bar in our basement, stemware, walls, shelving, EVERYWHERE.  We had also just had new carpet put down and the sawdust was all over the new carpet.  Carlos did his hurried best to wipe things down but in no manner did he capture even half the sawdust.  We hired a cleaning service to come and clean up the mess and Bob Anderson was noncommital and frankly did not care about the fine sawdust damages which caused us headaches and extra expenditures.  While we would hire Carlos again in a minute and provide him with tarps, we would hesitate to use Bob Anderson.  Particularly as we were later informed by Carlos that Bob had misled him into believing we did not pay the balance of the bill for the extra square footage due to the sawdust.  We had to provide Carlos with information proving we had paid Anderson so the matter could be handled in small claims court.

    Courtesy Electric Inc.
On September 9, 2015, we purchased a deal through Angie's List for three hours of handyman service.  The deal stated, "[c]an be used for everything from minor plumbing and electrical work, . . . ."  On the automated email form and later in a telephone conversation with Courtesy Electric, Jose was advised the work involved putting up lighting fixtures.  Courtesy Electric made an appointment to put up the fixtures on September 25, 2015.
We took time to pick out the fixtures and then I took the day off work to be home when Courtesy Electric arrived.  And I waited, and waited, and waited.  I finally called Courtesy Electric at 3:30 pm to determine what was going on.  Two hours later, Jose with Courtesy Electric called back to inform me he had decided they would not be able to honor the deal because of insurance issues.  Jose admitted he had known of the "insurance issues" for several days but had apparently decided not to let us know.  The insurance issues surrounded sending a "handyman" to do electrical work.  Yet electrical work is the business Courtesy Electric is in and holds itself out as being electrically proficient !!  Is he saying Courtesy Electric is not insured for electrical work?
Courtesy Electric wasted significant amounts of both our time and money and we are not fans of rude inconsiderate behavior.  A reputable company would stand behind the bargain it had made and be more cognizant of quality customer service.  Cannot recommend Courtesy Electric to anyone.
