Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care
My transmission went bad a few years back and at the time Cottman was listed as a place you could go and the Carmax warranty would pay for it. It was the worst car repair experience I have ever had. They told me several times that my car was ready but when I got to the shop it was still up on the lift and the transmission was still out and the replacement still had not come in. I remember one time the guy at the counter asked me who told me it was ready and I said he had and he just shrugged it off. I would not send anyone to this place.

Jerry was great.  He showed me the part he replaced.  Told me exactly what the issue was.  He must be right because I have not had that issue again.  That was over a year ago.

Jerry came to us recommended by others, and after all the problems we had taking our cars to dealers, he has become the only mechanic we will trust with our vehicles. He is a matter-of-fact "old school" mechanic who can literally tell what is wrong with a motor by the sounds it makes! As a female who doesn't know much about cars, I know he will explain how it works and what is wrong; I can trust that he is forthright about the service he provides. My husband knows that Jerry and his wife will take good care of his family's cars if he is away on business, so there is no need to put something off until he gets back home to deal with a mechanic himself. We highly recommend this family owned business so much that we became members of Angie's List solely for the purpose of being able to write a review for River Ridge Transmissions; we wanted others to know that there is a honest mechanic in the area that they can trust!

Hamid had originally worked on my transmission 7 years ago.
I swung by trying to remember where the shop was.
He couldn't do it that day, but told me he'd open up on Sunday to work on my car, which he did.
When he told me that it would be hours (5-7) to do all the work, he offered to lend me his car!!
Mr. Madani is the soul of honesty and good work. He only charged me $25.00. Now the car works perfectly.
And, he remembered me after a 7 year time span. wow.

I like them a lot. They did a good job. They are personable and reasonable. They have fair prices. They are good. Sometimes they have a lot of business. They will bend over backwards to try to help but there is only so much they can handle. I use them all the time.

After getting four different rebuilds quotes I went to Jerry and he beat the competition by about $1000. I have a decently modded diesel truck and needed a strengthened transmission. Jerry told me every part that he was going to install and how they would benefit my performance. 2 years later it stil shifts hard wether towing a 18,000 lbs trailer or taking a trip down the 1/4 mile. Thank you, Josh Jones

They were excellent to deal with. They answered when I called, were able to see me quickly, and diagnosed and fixed the problem in a day.
This is a problem that I have had going on with my truck for several years. People have joked that my car has Demons. When they called me back to tell me the car was ready, they said, "They got the gremlins out."
Pretty awesome experience, and no problems since I picked it up.
I have been using Aarrow transmission for both personal and business vehicles for years and will continue to do so.

We were having trouble with our 2000 Ford Explorer. Lots of nasty vibrations at low speeds that were getting worse, a few leaks
underneath, a loose shifter that kept falling from park into reverse, brake warning lights -- it was becoming a mess. We bought it cheaply a year ago from family members who were upgrading to another SUV. We had a baby and needed something with extra space. Nonetheless, it's always had an odd vibration at high speeds, but we had been told by other mechanics that it couldn't be fixed and we'd just have to deal with it. But over the last week, the vibration became very loud at all speeds and made it unnerving to drive.
I hit up friends and the Internet for suggestions on transmission shops, but kept getting pointed towards the big box shops. I've played that game and lost more than once, so I tried Angie's List for the first time ever to get a different perspective. River Ridge Transmission came up first and had nothing but A+ ratings and great reviews. I took a shot and called on a Wednesday. Jerry (the owner) answered the phone and told me a little about the shop. I told him about my problem and he quickly said it was probably the U-joints, but suggested I bring it in the next day so he could give it a look-through.
I drove it in around noon the next day (Thursday) and met Jerry. Truly a nice, approachable guy. I gave him a typed list of the issues we had been having and a brief history of our ownership of the SUV. He said he'd take a look and call me back to me either later the same day or early Friday morning.
As promised, he called Friday morning and gave me the rundown. It was indeed the U-joints, which also caused the leak I saw at the rear differential. He also told me that I needed new brake pads on all four wheels, which is what was causing the brake light to come on. The oil leak I found was being caused by old cover gaskets.
Then he gave them to me as a priority list. The transmission issues needed to be done first and would cost $400. He said the brake pads weren't at a critical level (but verified that I had new rotors that were fine, even though I didn't tell him that) but said the pads should be replaced within a month or two, and those would cost $300 total. Finally, he said the oil leak was ugly looking but said if I wasn't noticing a lot of oil loss (which I haven't because I change my own oil and haven't noticed more than half a quart missing ever at change time, even when I push it an extra 1,000 miles), I shouldn't worry about it until it becomes noticeable because it was a labor intensive fix and would cost $450.
Though another shop could have tried to scare me about all of it and fleece me for $1,200+ all at once, Jerry was beyond honest and straightforward with me. He actually seemed to care about our issue and wanted it fixed as much as we did. I told him that we could afford to do the transmission work now, and I'd be back next paycheck for the brake work. He said that would be fine and said he'd have it ready to go by Monday. Right as rain, he called Monday afternoon and said I was ready to go!
As I said earlier, we'd always had a mildly annoying vibration since buying the SUV. Well, when I fired it up to leave and put it in gear I noticed a change. No vibration. None. As I got up to speed, still no vibration. After it was warmed up, I punched it a few times. No abnormal noise. Nothing.
Even with 211,000 miles on it, I swear it's like driving a new car. We've owned it for a year and it's never been this nice to drive.
So, we are more than happy! Transmission work is always a scary, potentially ludicrously expensive proposition. Jerry's straightforward honesty made it so much easier to deal with. That's why I'll be taking all of our vehicles to River Ridge from now on when they need work.
When I drove our Ford in that day, I was fully expecting to have to shop for another car when I got the call back. Oddly enough, Jerry gave me a new car -- and I already owned it.

Weaver Transmission kept the truck over the weekend and drove it to help with the diagnosis. They called me a said that they didn't think it needed a clutch replacement at this point. They offered to "Bleed" any air from the hydraulic shift mechanism. They did this and called me back to say that the truck was shifting smoothly. I offered to pay them for the diagnosis and the "Bleed" process they had performed since we had earlier talked about a $45 diagnosic fee. They would not invoice me for the work and simply asked that I come back to them if it ever did need work. (The clutch replacement estimates I had received ranged from $900 up to $1,100!) In short they would do work they didn't think it needed and they didn't bill me for fixing it! Very professional and they take a very long range view of customer relations and satisfaction. Great people!
