    Bon Secours Associated Internists
I've been going there for about five or six years. She gets you in within about five minutes of your appointment time. The staff is friendly. I recommend her to my friends when they ask for somebody. I just like her. She's very competent and caring.

    Melhorn & Melhorn DOs Inc
I used to be treated by the present Dr. Melhhorn's father.     He is retired.   His son has taken over the practice.   Seems to be a knowledgable chairopractor.    Procedure he follows is good and helps one relax prior to doing "manipulation" or cracking my joints.    His equuipment and furnishings are very old and dated.    Probably works just fine as it gets job done and new equipment would just cost him and then patient more money.     His treatments help with back pain a lot .   Usually need to go for 3 or 4 times to get it to not come back.    Currently deciding on whether to go to him or to a orthopedic doctor as I have a severe pain in my neck which is new.    Anticipate he could eliminate it so probably will call him to try manipulation first for a few times.   If it does not work I can then go to ortho doctor as I am sure they would want to do surgery as first try to resolve.

    Shapiro, Dr. Ellen C.

Dr. Shapiro listed to my story and then examined me. She pretty much knew right off the bat that it was Gout.....unfortunately. She scheduled me for a blood test to determine the level of uric acid in my blood. Most people's symptoms show-up in one or both of their big toes, so my case was a bit different than the norm.

The results of the blood test confirmed a high level of uric acid in my blood and the diagnosis of Gout. Dr. Shapiro prescribed Uloric (40mg/daily) for me, to lower my levels of uric acid.

Three months later, I went back for a follow-up and another blood test. The level of uric acid has dropped to a more normal level, and I have not had any significant flare-ups since starting the Uloric. The only drawback is that the Uloric is brand new, and there is no generic version. So, you need to have decent insurance coverage to cover the costs. I believe the actually cost of the 40mg dosage is approximately $230/month.

Dr. Shapiro is very professional, and in my opinion definitely knows what she is doing. She takes the time to explain things to the patient and answer any questions you may have. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a Podiatrist.

    Duke, Dr. Howard F

Dr. Duke fixed the bunion on my left foot approx. 20 years ago - pre-Angie's list. It has never given me any trouble since then. So, when my right foot developed a bunion, I went to Dr. Duke again. He examined my foot and was very thorough and direct in explaining all the options and possible outcomes, which I so appreciate from a doctor. He explained how a bunion develops and how it progresses. For an active person like me, it's a one way process: the bones continue to spread outward, they don't stop or reverse their outward push. Once fixed, which involves cutting bone and placing pins to hold the bones together, the problem is fixed forever: the toes are straight, and mercifully, the pain ceases! That I can attest to, due to my prior experience with Dr. Duke. He also said that I could choose to wait until the pain got worse, but that the younger you are, the faster the healing.

He was most emphatic about the post-operative care, explaining all the medications 3 times, and repeating that I was to call every day the first week following my surgery, to report on how I was feeling. The first day, the office called me before I had a chance to call in. I went for a post-operative check up 4 days after the surgery. The incisions looked good, Dr. D. wrapped my foot up again, and I am wearing the boot. It has been surprisingly pain-free, I am starting to get around more, per instructions, and I expect a good outcome like before.

A few years ago, my sister finally decided to do something about her bunions so she came here to Richmond from her home in Strasburg just on the basis of my experience with Dr. Duke. The next year, she came back so he could fix her other foot. She said that she'd have come back to him for another foot procedure, only she'd run out of feet.

A couple of years ago, my daughter went to him to correct a hammer-toe and also had a good experience and outcome.

My only issue is that, having directed others to Dr. Duke, it seems I should get a volume discount!

    Bambi Gladfelter DO
We had an extremely positive first experience, which has only become stronger. She is thorough and patient. She listens closely and you know that she is with you entirely, which is so important and unfortunately so rare. Her staff is extremely competent and friendly. From start to finish you know you are in capable and caring hands! Bravo!

    Hellams, Dr. Ralph D
Both the receptionist and Dr. Hellams are very gracious and professional.  Dr. Hellams is very knowledgeable with a very warm and caring bedside manner.  We did not feel rushed or belittled when asking questions. We spent over an hour talking about atrial fibrillation, stroke, clotting and medications.   After relocating we looked for a good family physician and have been very fortunate in finding Dr. Hellams.  Not only is he knowledgeable, but was extremely helpful in recommending top specialized physicians in the Richmond area.  His country office is warm and cozy.  The receptionist very friendly and accessible.  We would highly recommend Dr. Hellams as a family physician.

    Dausch, Dr. Susan
To this day, I fully credit Dr. Dausch with saving my life. When I saw her, an ultrasound showed a cyst which imaged as a benign growth. Out of caution, she did a blood test, which showed one count high, though not off the charts. AT THAT POINT, she insisted that a gynecologic oncologist do the surgery with her - her comment, and quot;I see this, but he looks at it every dayand quot;. Diagnosis: advanced ovarian cancer. Treatment started 10 days later. Outcome: 11 years later, I'm healthy, thriving, no relapse. The data is clear: having a gyn onc do the surgery up front is a SIGNIFICANT predictor of a positive result.
