Does a Painting Estimate Really Matter?

House Painting reviews in Manakin Sabot

    River City Painters
This company did a terrific, very professional job for us.  They provided a large crew that worked consistently and diligently through the day and completed the entire project in one day.  They were neat and thorough and we are very happy with the outcome.  We will definitely use them for all of our painting needs!

    Andy Gill Painting & Wallpaper
After meeting with Andy for the estimate, I scheduled to have him perform the work the following week.  A couple of days before the painting date, I called Andy to confirm the type of paint he wanted me to purchase.  He returned my call and said he may have to come later in the day to finish up another project.  I asked him how he'd be able to complete in an afternoon when he said it would take him all day.  She said he'd bring his buddy and finish in 3-4 hours.  I reminded him that he originally quoted me a full day's work including his friend (and by the way now having completed with another painter, there is NO way this project could have been done in 3-4 hours), but he said they could get it done.  Then he said that he could switch it back and keep me in the morning and finish up with the other person in the afternoon, which did I prefer?  I said, "I'd prefer you keep your appointment with me at 8:30."  And so we agreed...again.
45 minutes before our scheduled appointment, and after I moved all the living room and bedroom furniture, Andy calls and tells me that he can't do the job, that we'd have to push it a day.  His friend was sick for the day and the other client had apparently accommodated his delays once already with carpet rescheduling and couldn't do it again (I thought yep, this woman has a story as well).  This wasn't about the friend being sick, it was about Andy not giving realistic estimates on the time.
And because of Andy, I had to reschedule our audio/video installers, who in turn had to juggle their schedules.  Fortunately I was able to work it out to have another painter (Rob Hetrick) do it the next day who did an outstanding job.

Here's the problem with Andy's response here:
    1)  He did not call me ahead of time to reschedule.  I called him to inquire about the paint.  In that conversation he mentioned he was running behind on another job.
    2)  Andy did NOT attempt to reschedule with me for a different day.  He said he would have to start in the afternoon rather than the morning but would get it done in 3-4 hours (not possible for two people).
    3)  Andy, NOT ME, suggested keeping the same time (morning) on the same day and move the other woman to the afternoon.
    4)  At no point did Andy tell me this was a tentative appointment depending on how far he got on the other project, so to tell me that he would be there at 8:30 and then cancel 45 minutes beforehand and after I moved all the furniture is a colossal inconsideration and cannot simply be waved away by oh, we attempted to be "reasonable and professional."

Andy, if you don't understand how unprofessional that is, you shouldn't be in business.

Overall our experience was excellent with 89 Paint. Our contact person, Jason Sapp, was very professional and knowledgable about this job. He was punctional on the day he came to give us an estimate and the job was started within two weeks. He communicated throughtout the whole project and never left us in the dark. At the completion of the project there were a few areas we thought needed some touching up and it was done promptly. We were very pleased and the job was better than expected.
The only dissappointing thing was some paint drips, brush marks, and a paint "footprint" that dried on our asphalt driveway outside of the garage. Maybe next time some more tarps could be put down to protect ones personal property. I am sure over time the paint drips, etc. will weather away.

    N Chasen & Son Inc

Over the past two years I have done extensive repairs and renovations on two houses. Unfortunately, I did not use Chasen on the first house. My experience with so called "good contractors" was horrible. They turned out to basically be a bunch of jack legs, doing inferior work.

When I started work on my home this year, I decided to use Chasen because of their Angie's list ranking. And I must say it has been a very pleasant experience.

First off, they promptly return phone calls. They show up when they say they will, and if they are running late, they call immediately. Their workmanship is superior. They are neat, courteous, and clean up every day. There is no loud chatter all day and no blaring radios.

In a word, they are TRUE PROFESSIONALS.

Yes, you will get cheaper estimates. I use the word cheaper because that is what you will get from the cheaper contractors.

Chase was a little more than the lower bids, but after the horrible experience I have had with other contractors, I will say they are worth every penny.
