    WISA Solutions
Price, Product and Performance. WISA once again delivered a spectacular product for the best price around with an experience that was on time, on budget, courteous and professional. This is the second time we have used WISA for home improvements. Both resulted in a wonderful improvement to our home as the lowest price of any bidder, and with the best results imaginable. We got exactly what we wanted with minimal disruption. From initial planning and design, to demolition, to the craftsmanship in building, to a final product that we are thrilled with, the owner, the architect, and the builders were ever present, true professionals and incredibly respectful and responsive to building a beautiful deck with high quality materials, attention to every detail, and meticulous construction execution. These guys are professionals in scheduling, woodworking and supervision. They know what they are doing, they do it very well, and they do it honestly. And I do mean honestly. I know from two experiences that they do it for the best price anywhere and that there is never a cut corner. I absolutely recommend them. And I know exactly who will be doing my next home improvement project: WISA!

    Rent-A-Pro Handyman Services LLC
My townhouse porch needed railings and 2 steps replaced due to wood rot, along with repainting and replacement of several small rotted areas. Everyone I worked with at Rent-A-Pro was professional and kind, and the work was completed quickly. The work looks great, the price was very reasonable, and I will be contacting Rent-A-Pro again after this positive experience.

    DeckMaster Inc
Kind of a weird experience. We paid the deposit, heard that we would get a call before work began (as scheduling was contingent on weather), but after a few weeks I called to check where we were in line and was told we would be notified soon. Came home the next day and the first part was done. They protected my house but my neighbor's house got sprayed when they were cleaning mine and we weren't able to wash it off with a regular hose. When they did the second part (also showed up with no notice), they disconnected our HVAC and didn't tell us and we didn't know, so we had to have our HVAC company come out to fix the problem as it was 90 degrees and we have small children and pets and they found that a wire had been snipped and the HVAC had been unplugged. It was definitely DeckMaster that did it because we have a camera showing who goes onto the property and then we have a smart thermostat that shows what the temperatures are in the house at what time, and the temperature started rising around the time they arrived. When I told DeckMaster, they just said "Thanks for telling us" (no apology for leaving us without AC for a day). The deck itself looks fine but it was such a weird experience with non-existent communication and sloppy work (getting the neighbor's porch dirty and disconnecting/severing our HVAC wires somehow) that I would not recommend.

I must admit that I was initially more a spectator on the project. My attitude changed once the elements started coming together. I couldnt believe the backyards transformation. Luis transformed an overgrown and inaccessible space into a beautiful, and functional, area in which we now love to spend time and entertain guests. So, I asked him to recommend further improvements. We eventually sealed the underside of the deck and put in a nice outdoor bar to take advantage of our waterfront view. We also added new steps and a portico to the front of the house. Luis has a keen eye and is a fountain of ideas. Most importantly, hell work with you on the plans and costs. He never engages in a hard sell, and hell see the project through to the very end. Hell make sure that the work meets his high standard and that you, his client, are satisfied with the result. Weve worked with many contractors before on household projects our house was built in the 1970s -- and Luis is a cut above the rest. I highly recommend him. In fact, Im now working with him on another project.

    ProDeck Construction LLC
From start to finish, working with ProDeck was a pleasure. They started two weeks early on installing the deck, kept at it with a dedicated crew, and finished in only two days. I was initially concerned that they would block my driveway with materials until the project was complete, but they managed to carry all the materials to the backyard on Day One. My driveway was never blocked. I absolutely love my new deck and thank ProDeck for their professional services.

    Northern Virginia Deck & Fence
I contracted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence to build a deck on the back of my townhouse back in 2009.  I was a young, new homeowner but no dummy, so I had 3 companies come out and provide me with an estimate. Two of those other estimates were higher in cost and came with a high pressure salesman.  However, I did my research before-hand regarding the approximate cost AND wasn't comfortable using either of these other companies.

So I contacted Northern Virginia Deck & Fence.  It was a small business and not one of these big deck companies. The business owner Larry came out himself and provided me with a no pressure estimate and was honest and knowledgeable.  He quoted me a fair price, about $1,000 to $1,500 less than the other guys.  He was organized, prompt, and a down to earth, hard-working type guy so I felt comfortable using his company.

Once I agreed to the contract and was on the schedule, he was very good at keeping communication open and let me know when to expect his crew since there were some weather delays.  I had Larry pull all of the necessary building permits since I didn't have time to get out to the county to do so myself.  His crew was prompt every morning and Larry came by everyday to check on the progress and quality of workmanship.

I was extremely happy with the results.  Everything went so well that the following year I had Larry and his company build a lower level deck to complete my back yard.  I would recommend using NoVa D&F if you are looking for a fair price with excellent results.

    Mardeck's Professional SVC
I contracted Mardeck's on June 11, 2014 to power-wash and stain both the upper and lower level decks on my townhouse.  Communication was mostly done via email to set up the appointment.  I communicated with Mario & Maricela and worked out the details of the contract and price.  They were helpful and I looked forward to having them preform the services for me.  I didn't have the time to do the work myself, my wife was pregnant and we were holding a baby shower in a month, so we needed the job done before then.

Weather & scheduling kept pushing the dates back, but they were finally able to come out during the week of June 23rd, 2014.  They made two trips.  During the first trip, they treated and power-washed the deck.  They did a good job treating the mildew off of the decking.  However, and as somewhat expected, there was some splintering of the wood from the high pressure, commercial power-washer.  Not a big deal, but wasn't ideal considering the decks were only 4 years old at the time and still in good shape other than the dirt & mildew buildup. Now they were a little rough, especially along the hand railings.

They returned on June 26th, 2014 to stain the deck.  I remember it well because it was the same day that the US played Germany in the 2014 world cup.  AND, from this point on I had problems with the quality of services received.  The deck staining crew did not arrive until between 4:30 - 5:00 pm.  The agreement & contract stated that "two coats on flat area and one coat on vertical area" would be applied.  I also had a slightly unusual request that the Underneath of the top deck also be stained.  I paid extra for it and had it written into the contract.  HOWEVER, Unless this was the fastest drying stain ever, the so called "two coats" were sloppily applied in the 2 - 2.5 hours they were there.  I wasn't watching over the crew like a hawk and it was also an 88 degree day with 80% humidity. SO needless to say, the job didn't come out looking as professionally as I had expected.  I called Mario the following Monday after the stain had ample time to dry.  I questioned the application of the second coat.  He assured me over the phone that two coats were applied.  This may have been true, but in my experience, you need to allow the first coat to fully dry before slopping on a second coat.  The deck looked OKAY and I didn't have time to nit-pick over what I thought was a rushed stain job, so I didn't complain any further.

NOW, Fast forward to summer of 2015.  Some of the mildew had returned in certain areas and MOST of the stain was still holding except for a few minor spots (90% of approx. 650 sq.ft. of decking was looking okay).

NOW, it is present day in spring of 2016 and the deck looks terrible.  Spotty looking areas, some with stain and others without stain.  Mildew covering big areas of the lower deck and small areas of the upper deck.

The Behr deck stain that they used was suppose to last 5 years!  This should be warrantied but I don't know what channels to go through to find any of this out.

So I would take this as a warning to any future deck staining projects you might be thinking of.  I felt Mario's crew rushed this job and I didn't speak up at the time.  I trusted the professional and his crew.  At the time, Mario's business location was less than 2 miles away from my house and he never came out and even looked at the project to ensure a quality service was provided.

Now, I am in the process of power-washing and treating the deck myself.  I wish I had documented and pictured everything. I am regretful I paid so much money for the stain to last less than 2 years.   I would NEVER use Mardeck's again in the future unless they want to Warranty their services or help remedy the problems I am facing now.

I contracted with Whitmer Decks last spring to replace my old deck. Cliff and Lisa Whitmer were great to work with during all phases of the project... the initial consult, design and planning, deck build and follow-up after the build. Cliff was the only contractor who correctly advised me - up front- of changes needed in my initial design concept to address Fairfax County building code requirements.  As issues came up during the build, Cliff readily addressed each one to my satisfaction. Overall I am very pleased with the outcome.  If you are planning a new deck, consider Whitmer Decks. The Whitmers are great to work with and they build quality products.

Before & After Home Improvement Co
We feel like we hit the contractor jackpot!  Rick is very competitively priced but with superior quality workmanship.  He and his crew finished our basement- built 3 rooms with closets, a bathroom, utility closet, and main living space.  He ran cable and plumbed for a future bar.   I asked him to match all the details of our main floors so it would fit seamlessly in with the rest of the home and not feel like a basement- he hit it out of the park.  He matched our window/door trims and all of the crown molding.  It all looks fantastic!
I also gave him a picture of a bathroom that inspired me and he crafted one that looks amazing- modern tile and finishes are right out of HGTV.
He is very responsive, professional, visits the site constantly to make sure work is on schedule and up to par, and very efficient- it took less than 4 weeks to complete.
You cannot go wrong with Before and After Home Improvement- he will be our go to contractor from here on out.

    Prince William Home Improvement
The estimate process did not go well.   First, they called two hours prior to the scheduled appointment to delay the time by two hours.  Secondly, they couldn't send an estimator for the back splash and wanted a second date.  I said "no".  Thirdly, they told me I had to have all "decision makers" present.  Fourthly, during their quality presentation, the estimator lied.  He said Angies List gave his company an "A".  As you can see, they  earned a "B".  Fifthly, he would not give a written estimate, but kept it in their system for future reference.  Lastly, their price seemed exceptionally expensive and complicated.   It started at $26,000, then he gave me a 20% discount, then another discount for military, and maybe a third discount...I forget.  Their bottom line closed at $19,300.  Why the BS?
An honest company will give you a detailed written estimate.   From their reviews, seems they can do quality work, but at a ridiculous price.   There are plenty of honest straight "A" contractors on this list, skip this one.
