    Timber Works, LLC
I asked Timber Works to remove 3 trees. The showed up and in just a few hours had removed them all and removed the stumps and large roots. You almost never knew there were trees in the yard before. The crew was respectful and cleaned up after themselves. The Timber Works bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive, however I believe I got a good value for my money.

Jack the owner came out the day after my initial call, performed an estimate, and marked the trees. Two men from his crew arrived on the day promised and made very short work of the trees and put them right where I wanted them...out of the way. The crew was very prompt, professional, and courteous. They performed the work quickly and the final price matched the estimate. They even stayed a few minutes and chatted. Gave me some very good advice to help get my wife and adjusted to our new home here on "the mountain." The best thing, other than good conversation, is now we also have a nice view from our rear deck. It's not very wide but gives a view across the valley clear to the Masanutten mountain range. Absolutely gorgeous. Thanks guys!!!

    Smittys Tree Service
Called them and asked if they had workers compensation insurance (which any website will tell you is a must for this line of work or you could get stuck with a bill if something goes wrong.) They said yes and proceeded to come to my place to quote. The price seemed reasonable and we set up a date. I could not get them to send me the insurance cert and then they admitted they didn't have one and they were just using a company for a few weeks to help out previously that had it. It was difficult to get a quote from them since the receptionist kept getting confused. Then they said they had to reschedule so I said no problem and proposed a new date but never heard back from them. I have learned that with contractors in Front Royal they just call you when they feel like it. I guess $1600 a day is not too much money too them. My 76 year old dad ended up cutting down the trees for free.

    Smittys Tree Service
I called this company about removing some logs from my property and set up a meeting for a given date. The provider failed to show up for the appointment, nor did he cancel it. The provider did not contact me over the subsequent two and a half days, at which time I called and left a message. It is now 24 hours since I left that message and no one has called me back.
It is evident that the provider doesn't want the job, and had he told me this during our conversation I would not be writing this. But to make an appointment that he had no intention of keeping is to make a fool out of the customer. It is the worst sort of passive-aggressive and unprofessional behavior to leave a prospective customer twisting in the wind.
If this company wants your job, and if they come and do the job and all goes well, you might be satisfied. But my experience suggests strongly that there is an underlying contempt for the customer with this outfit, and that if any problem develops you will likely find yourself dealing with passive-aggressive behavior.  That is, you will probably be ignored.

    Shenandoah Tree Service
The owner of this firm was very professional and came out to my home on time and gave me an estimate that I felt was fair. We arranged for he and one of his employees to come out with his equipment to remove this tree the next morning. They arrived during the time it was sleeting and freezing rain and did a wonderful job. I will certainly hire this company again. I was able to save money by telling them I would take wood off property and they needed to stack it on my property.

Dan Sly's Tree & Landscaping, LLC
Dan Sly sub-contracted the job, and these contractors were plagued with equipment failures to where they would start one day and have a piece of equipment fail and would stay a half day and show up two or three days later with another piece of equipment and that would fail by lunch, and this cycle went on for a couple of weeks.  Then Dan Sly would used his own people to finish the work, and they would end up getting their Bobcat tractor stuck and spent a couple of hours getting it out, then would pack up and tell me they can't come back until there is no rain for 6 weeks before they could get their equipment back in there without getting stuck.     Since this time, Dan Sly informed me that those gentlemen have since been fired for poor performance, that said, one of his reliable workers did come back and finish the job and was very respectful of my wishes and finished the job nicely.  My feeling is that if Dan Sly brought his own people in from the beginning, we may have not been fraught with these problems, and the lower rating are reflective of his sub-contractors performance and not  by Dan Sly..

    Shenandoah Tree Service
It went perfectly as planned. Provider completed the work in one day and returned a second to meet with me and ensure I was satisfied. He worked with my budget as well -- the original quote was to limb-up and remove trees plus clean up branches and debris afterward. In order to save a little money, I asked if he would do only the limb-up and small tree removal, leaving the clean up for me to do later. Very cooperative and friendly. I would definitely use him again for future needs.
