Lighting Installation reviews in Hampton

Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • He sent his son, who was learning the business. I was not far away, putting together bookcases together, looked uo to see the hole he was cutting in the ceiling was not where it was supposed to be. He ignored me when I showed him where it was to go and put the light fixture where he had started. A couple days later, I ran into the project manager. He blew it off. My parting words were, "OK, I'll have to get a refund since the light is not where it is supposed to be". That evening Mr. Smoker and his son were at my door. The job was redone correctly & the ceiling repaired. He had learned that I had a garbage disposal to hook up. He had his son do it at no charge. I appreciate what he did and I didn't have to "settle".

  • Great. Lights fixed fast. Figured out that GFI citcuit was inop and fixed that. Outside socket was diagnosed, rewired, and covered correctly with a waterproof box. Took a while but they persisted and fixed it all.

  • They are good on price. Usually, they send one person, but if there is a lot of work to do, they send three people. The workers are very friendly and they leave the work area clean. I have used them for the last five or six years.

  • We hired Erik Quam from Titan Contracting to rescue us from a disastrous remodel that was started by another company. Erik and crew had to redo all of the inferior work that the other company completed, before their work could begin. Erik and his crew were always prompt, polite, tidy and gave our project their complete attention. Erik listened to my ideas and offered several great ideas of his own. After 7 months of dealing with a terrible contractor, Erik and crew finished our bathroom in about one month. Our new bathroom is BEAUTIFUL and the workmanship is outstanding. We have several other projects to plan and we will definitely make Erik and Titan Contracting our FIRST and ONLY call. Thanks for everything Erik!

  • Before Mr. Bush and his apprentice came to our home to do the work, I discussed the problem and he immediately inform me that he knew what was needed and the price for the work being done was perfect. Once he came, he went right to work and in no time all the work was done. I have dealt with other Electricians but this was by far the most peasant experience that I have had and a long time. I have been sold on his professionalism and the workmanship of the completed project. He is now my choice for all future electrical projects.

  • After having a good experience with THI on my exterior work five years ago, I've always gone back to them to have other projects done. My experience with this company has been very positive.

The employees of THI are very courteous and professional.  They come on time and with a positive attitude.  The project managers that I worked with (I had the same person for two of my jobs and a different person for this latest huge remodel) were very knowledgeable of every aspect of the job.  They both did a good job scheduling all of the trades workers and keeping everything moving forward.  They both communicated very well with me and I always knew exactly who was coming, what they were coming to do, and when they would be there.  Did everything go exactly on schedule - well no.  I added several changes to the job, including gutting and redoing another bathroom at the last minute.  So we had to adjust time frames and expectations.  When we had a delay in the cabinet installation, due to my decision to rip out old plaster and replace with new drywall, Greg, the project manager worked swiftly and deliberately to catch us back up so we could finish as projected.

THI uses good sub contractors.  The floor, tile, electrical, and plumbing guys rocked.  They use small companies so there isn't a crew coming into your home.  The tile installer works alone.  The electrical company has two employees so the same two come every time and get to know your home electrical system well.  Same with the plumbers and floor installers.  I like that about THI.  Sure it isn't as fast sometimes as if a crew is sent in, but these trades people were truly professional, treating my house like their own.  I believe they did a better job than a bigger company would, and had more pride in their work.  To be honest, the owner of the dry wall company they used for my job was a bit rude, but Total Home Improvements quickly remedied that issue once I let them know.  All of the other sub-contractors were so very nice and professional and respectful.  I feel very fortunate to have met these fine craftsmen.

My experience with the sales representatives has also been very positive.  I used the same sales rep for two of my projects and he partnered with another sales rep on the major interior renovation they just finished.  They worked with me on the design and we made adjustments along the way.

I do not have any experience with the painters, however.  i have a painter that I have used for years (also works alone) so I opted to have him do the painting for my job.

Anyway, I am happy with all the choices I made throughout this renovation and with the work that Total Home Improvements did themselves or had done to make this reno happen.  It was complicated, removing walls and installing engineered beams, etc.  I worked at home throughout the whole reno, so I basically set up in one room.   My advice to anyone considering a renovation is to be very clear in what you want to have done and be very specific in your contract and understand the allowances, etc. in your contract and make adjustments if you need to. I marked mine up on a word document so I could be absolutely sure we were on the same page.  It took several revisions before we finalized the contract.   Also be realistic with your expectations and understand that there will be puts and takes along the way.  Material gets delayed; you make a change and things have to be redone.  Be patient and keep in constant contact with your project manager.  Understand that these people are human too.  The project manager may have a dozen jobs at any given time.

My tape measure broke the other day so I guess their work is done!  But if I have any other home improvements I have Total Home Improvements on my speed dial.  Seriously, it got frustrating at times - it was a 6 month major renovation after all.  But any frustration on my part was situational and the project manager was experiencing the same frustration.  Together we worked through any issues or decisions as they arose.

After the job was complete i'd say it was done pretty close to perfectly.  I have an old house and there's only so much you can do with an old house.  In my opinion Total Home Improvements did as much as could be done to maximize the footprint of my house, updating it from its 1970's look while maintaining the character of the home.

Thanks for reading my review.  I wish you luck in your home projects.

  • Mr. Bush provided a service window of 8AM-9AM. He was at the door at 8:05. He quickly diagnosed the issue and replaced the problem part. He was courteous and answered any questions I had. We would definately hire Bush's Electric again.

  • Wow!    What a great find.    Andrew Bush of BUSH ELECTRIC COMPANY and his 2 helpers arrived on time and were prepared to complete the job immediately.    No need to go out and purchase supplies.   Together we went over the details of the work.    He listened intently on exactly where I wanted the outlets positioned.    He arrived in a clearly marked work van.    He and his helpers appearance were professional and all were very clean and  polite.     Each member of Andrew's crew was well versed in their responsibilities and very capable to handle them.     This made for an extremely efficient project which was completed within an hour.     During the installation Andrew pointed out a failing wall light switch.     Before replacing the switch he first let me hear the difference between the faulty switch (popping sound)  and a good one and  after he removed the bad switch he had me smell the burnt wires inside the faulty switch.    I was so impressed by his thouroughness.    I hate to think of this fire hazard if he had not alerted me to the problem.    At the completion of the installation his designated helper cleaned up the work area.     I would not hesitate to use Bush Electric again and I certainly recommend him to anyone requiring electrical work.    Now this is how a company should operate!

  • I was very pleased with his knowledge and efficiency in repairing 4 old lamps in about 1/2 hour. It was nice not to have to carry them all to a shop. Definitely would recommend him to friends and will call him for future needs.

  • We chose Sturdevant Construction because of what we were led to believe by Nahum Sturdevant on our initial interview and subsequent contract signing. What we were told verbally would happen did not in reality come to be. Though the final product looks good, we had multiple issues all along the way. We are doing a major renovation of our whole house with my brother in law doing much of the work and I work alongside him so I see what is very high quality work and I know what isn't.
First of all, we had no idea from the sales pitch or contract that the work would not be done by Sturdevant employees themselves, but subcontracted out to independent workers. We would never have chosen this company had we known this as there is little opportunity for accountability or quality control. Nahum himself gave us his personal cell phone number on sales pitch and immediately, before actual work began and we had problems with the worker not showing up when he said he would, Nahum would never answer his phone or return our calls. We quit trying to reach him after 3-4 times.
On the sales pitch we were verbally told numerous times there would be no "extra charges". By the second day of work the contractor was complaining about the additional layer of old wall tile and plaster that had to be torn out. We were charged an additional $1000 for a day of labor.  On sales pitch we were told a licensed plumber and electrician would do those jobs and address any problems they found. Instead, the bathroom tile worker did all of that to a much lower standard than we wanted. See "Issued" below.
Issues: 1. The new light fixtures and outlets were patched into old wiring in the wall. New wiring to the panel should have been installed but that was not "in the contract." We even offered to open the wall downstairs to do this since we were renovating that in July but no go. 2. The bathtub drain line was installed too low for the sewer water to flow out by gravity. My brother in law had to re-plumb that. Fortunately we had torn out the first floor bath ceiling to discover that. 3. The diverter for the shower was installed improperly, or the part chosen by the contractor is the wrong part. The pipes are plumbed probably to the wrong connections behind the new tile wall. Upon complaining about this the supervisor later offered to tear out our hallway closet to get to the pipes but we didn't want to ruin our antique built in closet. The supervisor did not follow through nor did we even want them to come back. The diverter works but just not properly. Shoddy work. 4. The bathroom vent fan which we put in the contract was an ongoing issue, mostly resolved by my brother in law. 5. The new wall board was not cut to fit snug to the the window or door frame, with 3/4 inch gaps left. I discovered this when I painted the bathroom myself. 6. Upon "completion" we discovered the main sewer line from the new tub and toilet was clogged when we had guests for a week. A call to Sturdevant did nothing, I had to hire my own plumber to come snake it out from the roof vent. Sturdevant did not offer to reimburse me for that bill. 7. Midway through the job the contractor left for a weekend with the diverter unsealed so we had no hot water in the downstairs bathroom or kitchen until he returned on a Monday. 8. Our own plumber ended up doing a good bit of work that we had thought Sturdevant was going to do but the worker did not have the ability.
Now I know that as any job goes along these kind of issues arise and you solve the problems in consultation with the homeowner. I felt we were very flexible and understanding but the response from the "home office" often felt rather hostile. A few times we had to let them know strongly we were upset but rather than resolving the problem quickly we got "put off" and had to call our own plumber to resolve things.
I wasn't going to write up any of this and complain last summer at the end of the job but now, in 2016 when I am compiling all my financials for tax work and seeing what we paid, I am recalling the experience. They never did come back to resolve the final issues but I was also rather unwilling to have them come back and make things worse. Again, we have a nice looking bathroom. But had we not ourselves fixed the problems or had we not known what the problems were, this bathroom could have been a disaster.
So, pretty obviously, I do not recommend Sturdevant Construction.
