FI do not recommend H W Enterprises, Stacey Berland (owner) or Tommie Franklin (superintendent) to build, design, renovate or work on any type of construction project. They are not trustworthy, nor competent. They do not stay on site when work is being done. They often don't show up at all. She supervises work after it is done, resulting in rework. She contracts to install mini-splits, but actually gives the customer PTACs instead. We are 2 disabled Veterans, with 50 years of service between us. We hired HWE to do a major renovation. 1400 sq ft addition, 1 new bath, 2 remodeled baths, 12 new windows and driveway work. The job was so my recently widowed mother could come live with us. It was to be a 30 day job. On day 46, with about 40% of the work completed, she quit. We found out only when the trades & suppliers started calling us. She has received 73% of the job's cost. We will have to take her to court in order to recover the thousands of dollars she stole from us. Her erratic behavior is unnerving. Use someone - anyone - else. You have been warned...- Jerri S.

AMy initial consult with Jimmy Garcia was great! He was prompt and prepared, spent time explaining everything and going into all the details I would need to make a decision. I had called 3 contractors and he was the only one to respond and I felt like I could trust him so I signed up that day. Although the ordered windows were ready within 10 days he allowed me to work with my schedule so it was almost a month before they were installed. The work crew came out and did a fabulous job, and he came to check on the progress during the day and that crew seemed to never take a break and installed all the windows in one day. They were polite and cleaned up after themselves and seemed happy to be doing the job they were doing. I love that folks are working a job they enjoy, it means they are putting their best into it, and they did! Everything looks perfect! I will want to have this company do any further work for me in the future.

DThis company is a small family business, and like many family businesses they start off strong but when the younger generation gets involved, the business suffers. This company has simply gone downhill compared to when we first started working with them and they do not give the service or show the professionalism like they did just a few years ago.
We had very good experiences with the company previously (when the owner was involved and was on-site running the job). The first job we contracted with them was to convert our attic into liveable space (a $45,000+ contract); a few years later we contracted with them to built our free standing garage (a 35,000+ contract).
Our expectation on the third major contract with this company - a screen porch addition - was that we'd get the same great service and quality as before. They knew us and we knew them - right? Unfortunately that did not happen.
After our first and second contracts, we had praised this company to friends and several had followed up and had work done by them - additions and renovations to their houses. Now, after finally getting the porch finished (months late) our recommendation is to avoid this company like wood rot and look elsewhere. We'll never use this company again for **anything**.
The main failure was the owner of the company disappeared after the contract was signed and turned the whole job over to his son to run. While the son is a competent carpenter (he worked on both of our previous projects), he was overwhelmed with trying to run a construction project on his own. He had trouble reading and following the drawings; he could not schedule the work to keep it moving (he would disappear for a week or more without any word or explanation then show up and claim to have been tied up on other jobs or held up by the weather); and he was not able to coordinate details and would often have to redo work.
We tried on several occasions to get the owner of the company engaged on the project but with no success.
The last straw for us was when the contractor owner showed up presented us with a bill for several change orders that we had not seen before and demanded immediate payment. Whereas before we'd mutually agreed with the contractor to any change orders in advance of having the work done (and the price was always reasonable); this time the son did the work then presented us with the bill. Unlike the previous jobs, this time we felt the price was not reasonable. However, we decided to pay the bill to simply get the contractor and his son off the site. We did hold payment till the contractor returned our house keys (it is notable that we had to specifically ask for them back).
Bottom Line: You don't want to get involved with this company and for certain we will never use them again. Do yourself a favor and find another company - even if you pay more than what this company would charge, it will be worth it to avoid the kind of headaches and problems we had.

AI have had several construction people come out who were not willing to repair the unusually shaped vents with composite. But Scott did it with enthusiasm and perfectionism!! The cedar siding replacement was a great job and he even painted them after replacement. Every job he has done is perfect. I have referred him to several of my family members and they rave about the quality of his work.

FTerrible! Check the VA DPOR hearing records under Harry Hundley Custom Builder, or Hep You Build, Inc. for the discilinary actions and license revocation for his companies. Hundley was found guilty of numerous violations, was convicted and fined, and multiple licenses were revoked.

FTerrible! Hundley demonstrated that he was incapable of building our home in accordance with the plans and specifications. He substituted incorrect, inferior materials, employed unskilled workmen, could not read plans, ignored the contract specifications, failed to deliver and perform in accordance with the contract, and breached our contract agreement. He misappropriated materials from my project, and used those materials to construct another home.
Hundley was cited by the City of Hampton, Codes and Compliance for numerous code violations and was ordered to abate the violations. Harry Hundley did not correct any of the violations and I was forced to fire him and his company. Subsequently, I was forced to finish the construction of my home on my own. I was forced to defend myself in court against Hundley and was awarded a judgement order of $57,000.00 of which Hundley has paid me nothing! Subsequent to my award in the civil action, the Contractor's Board of the Virginia Department of Occupational Regulation levied fines against Hundley as the responsible manager and owner, and revoked the following licenses of Hundley's various companies; "Harry Hundley Builder, Inc" License No. 2705061924, and "Help-You-Build, Inc" License No. 2705061924. Subsequent to the revocation of his various licences, Hundley personally was brought to trial by the City of Hampton, was found guilty and was ordered to pay restitution to me and other homeowners. To date, I am still waiting to be paid by Harry L Hundley, III.
Harry L. Hundley, III has operated as Harry Hundley Custom Builder, Harry Hundley Enterprises, Harry Hundley Builder, Inc., Help-You-Build, Inc. Hundley has repeatedly demonstrated that he is incapable of managing the construction of homes, ignores Building Codes, fails to abate Code violations, ignores court orders, does not pay judgements and other debts, and does not conduct business honestly, as evidenced by the revocation of his various licenses and final court orders.
All of the adjudicated contracting board violations by Hundley resulting from complaints from numerous homeowners can be viewed on the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational regulation website; www.dpor.virginia.gov . Once on the DPOR homepage, click on "License Lookup" in the left hand column. Once on the license lookup page, click on the "Disciplinary Actions Occuring Since April 2002" link at the top of the page. Once on the disciplinary action page, type in "hundley" in the search box and all of the violations and judgements against Help You Build, Inc., and Harry Hundley Builder, Inc., five (5) reports in all; for companies owned and operated by Harry Hundley for which the DPOR revoked the licences based on code violations Hundley failed to abate and disciplinary action taken by the DPOR.
My strong recommendation from my personal experience in dealing with Harry L. Hundley III, and based on the final opinions, fines and judgements by both the VADPOR and the General District Court, City of Hampton, VA, is that no one should consider using Harry L. Hundley, III to manage the construction of their home.- Richard L. -
FTheir original estimate to add a second story to our home skyrocketed the minute they had our 10% deposit in-hand. At that point, we spoke with the contractor and voiced our concerns, not only about the price but also about conflicting information we had received from the City of Hampton Codes and Compliance. We later found out that because of our proximity to the water, we would have never been able to build the addition according to the plans used in TRN's quote. After we were one month into the project, we refused to sign a change of work order and asked for our money back -minus any documented fees. This change of work order increased the estimate of the structure by $11,000, but removed over 600 square feet of exterior living space -- and according to the City of Hampton would eventually have resulted in over 600 square feet of our original structure being classified as "storage". TRN severed all communication. The next we heard was from their attorney informing us that they had done extensive work on the project and were justified in retaining the $8,100.00 deposit. Mind you, no holes had been dug, no permits had been issued, the contractor had only been to our home twice. We were in litigation for 8 months - 3 court dates. The City of Hampton testified on our behalf. A judgement was finally awarded in our favor in July. TRN has refused to pay the judgement and claims to hold no assets.- william b.

AWe watched home go up in the Presson Arbor sub division for 2 years. When it came time to buy and resells did not meet our needs I went with Wayne Harbin. I compared his homes to some other builders and talked to friends about their home building experience. My father is in the construction trade and I walked him through some homes in progress and Wayne passed. About the process. Wayne is a tough negotiator and but a great builder. I brought a design/sketch and worked with his architect to realize my vision. Since I lived close I watched all phases of the process. I stepped in a few times to correct minor errors. Once I was on a trip and a roof/attic error got through. Wayne and I arrived at a compromise that was satisfactory. The quality was first rate and his office team was great (selections, issues, warranty). I give his subs either A or B grades. Site supervisors were helpful. I'm pleased with the home appreciation. Neighbors are equally please with Wayne Harbin Builders.- DGW A.
