A total nightmare for nine months and still going. This is the contractor building next door to me and I am not exaggerating how I have lost a year of life living next door to this construction project. The subcontractors were barbaric, food and trash piled eight foot tall for months even though the city of Hampton was contacted numerous times by all residents currently living in the neighborhood. Rats and raccoons running and taking over the community because of the trash. Long lengths of time while flooding rain stood inside the structure and the mosquitoes multiplied by millions. Loud music, disrespectful contractors taking over our quiet community parking in front of our houses and leaving heavy equipment and trailers for prolonged periods of time and little to no response by the building contractor Chris Carr. Damage to my home as well as the adjacent home, subcontractors who invaded and extracted our property and when approached cursed us out and did more damage to our property. The driver of the earth mover ran it back and forth deeper and deeper towards my property tonight in rage was my last straw, they continued to excavate my property after I called the police and then laughed at me, called me names and broke the shared fence intentionally while excavating and my dog got out who has never been out on his own. While they rode off in the sunset laughing at us because their job was done and the damage was on us for now and maybe years to come. Think twice before you hire this building contractor. He assured us that he would make repairs to our home while he was building but avoids us at all cost and is ready to put this poorly built house on the market for someone else to pay for the long term. This was just a summary of the pain, I could write a book.

We were on a tight budget and needed it done fast in order to sell! He came with an excellent price, and was able to finish the job before our deadline. Very professional and quite impressed with his work. Will definitely hire again for work on our next house!

I do not recommend H W Enterprises, Stacey Berland (owner) or Tommie Franklin (superintendent) to build, design, renovate or work on any type of construction project. They are not trustworthy, nor competent. They do not stay on site when work is being done. They often don't show up at all. She supervises work after it is done, resulting in rework. She contracts to install mini-splits, but actually gives the customer PTACs instead. We are 2 disabled Veterans, with 50 years of service between us. We hired HWE to do a major renovation. 1400 sq ft addition, 1 new bath, 2 remodeled baths, 12 new windows and driveway work. The job was so my recently widowed mother could come live with us. It was to be a 30 day job. On day 46, with about 40% of the work completed, she quit. We found out only when the trades & suppliers started calling us. She has received 73% of the job's cost. We will have to take her to court in order to recover the thousands of dollars she stole from us. Her erratic behavior is unnerving. Use someone - anyone - else. You have been warned...

They were good. It took less than a week. They supplied their own power supply. They did an excellent job. They used good wood. It rained a day or two but they still managed to finish within a week. It was during hurricane season and the power went out and they just continued working.

It was a very unique design with 45 degree angles and multi level deck. It's all modern composite decking. Its a very modern deck, but still retains the colonial style of the home. It was a challenging build. The work turned our beautifully.

    Total Home Improvements
After having a good experience with THI on my exterior work five years ago, I've always gone back to them to have other projects done. My experience with this company has been very positive.

The employees of THI are very courteous and professional.  They come on time and with a positive attitude.  The project managers that I worked with (I had the same person for two of my jobs and a different person for this latest huge remodel) were very knowledgeable of every aspect of the job.  They both did a good job scheduling all of the trades workers and keeping everything moving forward.  They both communicated very well with me and I always knew exactly who was coming, what they were coming to do, and when they would be there.  Did everything go exactly on schedule - well no.  I added several changes to the job, including gutting and redoing another bathroom at the last minute.  So we had to adjust time frames and expectations.  When we had a delay in the cabinet installation, due to my decision to rip out old plaster and replace with new drywall, Greg, the project manager worked swiftly and deliberately to catch us back up so we could finish as projected.

THI uses good sub contractors.  The floor, tile, electrical, and plumbing guys rocked.  They use small companies so there isn't a crew coming into your home.  The tile installer works alone.  The electrical company has two employees so the same two come every time and get to know your home electrical system well.  Same with the plumbers and floor installers.  I like that about THI.  Sure it isn't as fast sometimes as if a crew is sent in, but these trades people were truly professional, treating my house like their own.  I believe they did a better job than a bigger company would, and had more pride in their work.  To be honest, the owner of the dry wall company they used for my job was a bit rude, but Total Home Improvements quickly remedied that issue once I let them know.  All of the other sub-contractors were so very nice and professional and respectful.  I feel very fortunate to have met these fine craftsmen.

My experience with the sales representatives has also been very positive.  I used the same sales rep for two of my projects and he partnered with another sales rep on the major interior renovation they just finished.  They worked with me on the design and we made adjustments along the way.

I do not have any experience with the painters, however.  i have a painter that I have used for years (also works alone) so I opted to have him do the painting for my job.

Anyway, I am happy with all the choices I made throughout this renovation and with the work that Total Home Improvements did themselves or had done to make this reno happen.  It was complicated, removing walls and installing engineered beams, etc.  I worked at home throughout the whole reno, so I basically set up in one room.   My advice to anyone considering a renovation is to be very clear in what you want to have done and be very specific in your contract and understand the allowances, etc. in your contract and make adjustments if you need to. I marked mine up on a word document so I could be absolutely sure we were on the same page.  It took several revisions before we finalized the contract.   Also be realistic with your expectations and understand that there will be puts and takes along the way.  Material gets delayed; you make a change and things have to be redone.  Be patient and keep in constant contact with your project manager.  Understand that these people are human too.  The project manager may have a dozen jobs at any given time.

My tape measure broke the other day so I guess their work is done!  But if I have any other home improvements I have Total Home Improvements on my speed dial.  Seriously, it got frustrating at times - it was a 6 month major renovation after all.  But any frustration on my part was situational and the project manager was experiencing the same frustration.  Together we worked through any issues or decisions as they arose.

After the job was complete i'd say it was done pretty close to perfectly.  I have an old house and there's only so much you can do with an old house.  In my opinion Total Home Improvements did as much as could be done to maximize the footprint of my house, updating it from its 1970's look while maintaining the character of the home.

Thanks for reading my review.  I wish you luck in your home projects.

    Arrow Construction
Steve did a wonderful job remodeling our deck and fixing up the house. Very professional, fast, clean, always there on time. The services are reasonably priced too. I like that he took time explaining to us how everything will be done and making sure that's exactly what we want. It wasn't our first time working with Steve and for sure won't be the last.

    Residential Essentials by Gary Miller
From the very beginning Gary listened closely to what we were looking for in this bathroom re-model. He made excellent suggestions when we were unsure aesthetically where to go as well as what practically works and doesn?t. But he did not impose his ideas on ours. We could tell he thought things out very thoroughly and would not waste time or resources. Gary can make most anything work if the homeowner is willing to pursue it. Our 1911 house indeed needed much work.

Our first floor bathroom had to be stripped to the studs, ripping out all wiring and plumbing, ceiling, walls and floor. Even the wiring down to the circuit breakers in the basement. We literally re-started from scratch, creating a new smaller bathroom and a beautiful, very functional hallway closet. What makes the bathroom most dazzling is the hand tile job Gary did, artistically placing each small tile on the walls and in the shower stall. It is unique and truly a work of art. While everything is new and beautiful, it retains an old house charm, even an antique feel to it. My wife choose all the fixtures, tile colors, curtains, and lighting and Gary listened very closely to what she wanted and put it together, again and literally, like artwork.

Unlike other contractors we have used for another bathroom job, he did not cut corners or surprise us with "add ons?. He clearly explained everything he thought needed to be done and gave us options and choices. We feel like we not only got top quality craftsmanship in style but the ?bones? of the job, what?s underneath what you see, is very well done, too.

Another important factor for us was trust. Gary was very forthcoming and proved himself completely reliable. His helper, Kyle, worked very hard and they got the job done in a most timely manner.

I cannot recommend Gary enough. He can do high end, top quality work like for our home, or more affordable work using more affordable materials. He is completely honest and just simply needs to hear from the customer what they want and what they can afford.

    Quality Built Exteriors

Bottom Line Up Front:  I would hire this company again, but I would be much more involved in specifying my expectations in terms of exactly what I expected in writing and agreeing to a prompt timeline completion.  With reasonable prices, they are committed to customer satisfaction.  Don't settle, push them to deliver what you want and they will.

The review initially written below is accurate, but Quality Built Exteriors did re-engage following its posting to remedy the issue.  My feedback and comments apparently highlighted some quality issues with employees that they reportedly remedied, and they hired some real quality professionals to finish my job properly.

Had the job been performed as it is now the first time, my overall review would be a B, but I need to be honest in evaluating the total job process that took quite a while to resolve.

Let's start with the few positives I can share because it wasn't a completely miserable experience.  All personnel I engaged with were always friendly and courteous.  Whenever I called or texted any of them they were very responsive.  They completely rebuilt the House Deck railing and did a pretty good job.  The angles on the ends could have matched better, and filing/sanding off rough edges near the house prior to install would have presented a more professional product.  Unfortunately, these are the positive highlights.

The first time they "completed" the job I had many issues with the quality of the end product, which unfortunately I didn?t notice until after they left.

There were still many places where the paint applied was not done properly.  You could see multiple places that were completely unpainted and where proper application techniques weren?t used, resulting in improper coverage.  There still some deck boards that were rotten that should have been replaced too.  There was also a lot of overspray on the white wall-covers to my above ground pool.

They replaced the trim above the garage and painted it (albeit not well because streaking was obvious).  Now, they recommended replacement of the wood trim with a non-rotting PVC product which I approved, but the materials were not the same size so it left a 3/4 inch gap above the new trim about 1 inch deep.  The back of this gap was caulked, but aesthetically it looked horrible.  Had I know this was going to happen, I would have told them to replace it with wood.

After noting all these things, I called them back to fix the discrepancies.  It took them almost 2 weeks to come back out to the house because I had signed off on the job and they had already reassigned their workforce, which I understood.  In the meantime though I took the time to write out a detailed list of exactly what needed to be fixed to my satisfaction, went over it with them, and they agreed to fixing the list.  Unfortunately, when they came back out to do the work I was away on business, but when I returned I still saw that many of the items that I clearly noted were not addressed.  The gap above the garage was still there and it was not repainted but they seemed to have taken the paint I gave them for the job, there were still at least 5 places where there was still exposed wood (4 of which I specifically called out on the work list, the other was not highlighted in particular because I directed them to repaint the deck railing entirely due to multiple gaps), there was still debris under the pool deck that they created and didn?t clean up (again, on the punchlist I provided them), and the pool still had overspray on it.  I gave them a full week to call me back to see what I thought of the job, and they never bothered to do so.

As you can see, I paid over $4500 for the project and I?m not pleased.  The estimator warned me before signing up for the job that the painting/staining would be the most expensive part, which I understand, but I expected a quality product for that funding.  I?m also not convinced that I had all the boards replaced that the estimator charged me for because there were clear disconnects between the people actually doing the job and the person I worked with to contract the job (the estimator).  He only came back to the house to see the work if/when I called to complain.

I went with this company due to the good reviews and because they could start quickly, but I can?t really recommend them, particularly if you live on the peninsula.  A lot of work time and efficiency was lost in transit time and also due to frequent runs for tools and/or materials that weren?t brought to the site with them.
