Hospital Care reviews in Fredericksburg

    Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center
I will not go back to Spotsylvania Regional. The ER misdiagnosed me twice and were not attentive to the seriousness of my pain. I was happy with the doctors and surgeons once I was admitted. The nurses never seemed to be on the same page. They seemed to be understaffed and are not overly friendly. It felt like a factory.

I was pleased with the experience. The people were very friendly and attentive. They were available when needed. It is a new complex so it was nice and clean. The care was good. I was happy to see that there were actually a lot of males there. They were good and I would go back. They were busy but they were available.

Waited about 20 minutes to be seen, I'm usually a patient person, but
I did have to ask how long the wait would be since I was in so much
Cannot recall the ER doctor I was seen by, but everyone was
professional and timely and I was quickly diagnosed with gallstones. Treated appropriately with fluids, pain meds and a diagnostic ultrasound.
Discharged after a few hours with a surgery consult.
Had my follow-up surgery at Spotsylvania as well, I was very impressed by the surgical nurses, especially appreciated a small lidocaine block prior to having a catheter placed. I felt all the personnel; anesthesiologist, surgeon and nurses were
professional, friendly and thorough. The only incident that bothered me was waking from surgery in a great deal of pain, (tried to jump off the bed), they were quick in taking care of me, but it did point up a deficiency in their surgical pain protocol. Give an analgesic before waking!

    Mary Washington Hospital
The staff was great. They made me as comfortable as possible and reasurred me they were going to do everything they could to find out what was wrong with my leg. They took exrays and ultrasounds to make sure there was no blood clot in the leg and to make sue they could find the cause of the swelling. They reassured me everything was going to be ok and after all the work, they called my PCP (Commonwealth Internal Med) with the results of the tests.

The drs were great, with the only exception being a vague diagnosis of *confusion*. The female nursing staff was more than rude. I had been ill at home for over a week so I hadnt had a full bath in a while. So even after I did the bed baths, they took it apon themselves to insult my hygiene repeatedly and make fun of the state I was in apon arrival In a group powwow and even worse within earshot. If I could hear them, other patients could too. And it wasnt just a simple comment about maybe needing another bath. It was full on insulting descriptors complete with unacceptable slang for a reaking v*****. Even I the hospital I was unable to take a shower due to being on a polysom for three days. Also, when I asked for a reduction in pain medication, they broke protocol and snaped a heavy narcotic pill...straight half and never requested a lower dose from the md. I highly suspect medication diversion from someone in this nursing staff. This is not my first appalling experience with this hospital. I wouldn't go here even if I were dying. Never again.

More than 12 hrs had elapsed with no treatment whatsoever. I had an IV in each hand and was never given anything. When we got to the room, a doctor asked my daughter how long I had been depressed?!? (I was in and out of consciousness) She told him I did not have depression and this just started that morning.. She again asked about fluids..(she and my husband had asked several times) Two nurses came in and tried to figure out if I had already had an EKG and could not (??-where are the records) so they did another one (which my insurance was billed for) Fluids were finally started before 5am, I was really coming to and felt like a new person. By this time, two very young inexperienced 'doctors' (who we heard talking on cell phones outside my door) came in and said they were turning the case over to a exam, no nothing.. The neurologist ordered a short EEG to be done in the room.. the tech was very nice and very efficient. The nurses were nice, but never around. My husband did all bed pan duty, changed my gown and changed the bed! (I was there two days) The room was never cleaned and the only time I asked for pain meds for my head, the nurse said she was busy. I waited 4 hrs for a couple of generic Tylenol. Too many errors and things to go into..but long story short..I was severely dehydrated and if I had been given fluids right away, could possibly have avoided being admitted..Many mistakes were made and doctors never even seemed to figure out what the problem was until my family members pointed it out. A nightmare to be sure..Note that I made a formal complaint as soon as I got home and faxed it in. I got a certified 'courtesy' letter, but no calls, nothing to make it repsonse to billing errors, etc. I found that much of the staff is 'on call'..(part-time) and very inexperienced. The facility is wonderful, the food was 'fair' and the nurses that did come in were very 'nice', but had no knowledge of much of anything.. I would NEVER go to this hospital with anything life threatening or really serious..they are not prepared for such things. Had I had a brain bleeder or been having a stroke, way too much time would have been wasted. As it was, my insurance was billed over 20 thousand dollars (not counting physicans billings) by the hospital when all I needed was water!

The staff was great. I had to have a c-section and everything went very well. Due to a minor complication my son was in the NICU a couple of days, but the nurses were awesome. They were friendly and helpful. I hadn't heard the greatest things about Mary Washington, but my experience there was great. I know hospital food gets a bad rap, but I thought the food was great! When I have my second child Mary Wash is where I'll go. I did rate the billing low because they actually overbilled me $300. Thankfully I caught the error. I called them and they took care of it. Besides that everything was good!

The stay was just so great, we didn't even want to leave, knowing I was getting such great treatment. Also, private rooms for everyone, including a TV (with DVD player in delivery room) and a little couch for your husband to sleep on.

This is not my first experience with this facility; I was admitted myself on 11/20/11, was having a miscarriage. Treatment was not much better at that time, their only saving grace was my ob/gyn who is a wonderful doctor. The rest of the staff need a LOT of improvement. I saw nurses standing, frozen, not knowing what to do as I lost my son. If they are not prepared to deal with emergencies, they do not need to be working in an emergency room!!

We are not the kind of people who rush to the emergency room for every sniffle or scrape because it's all paid for us, and rarely see a doctor. It disgusts me to see that instances where a visit to the local pharmacy for cold medicine are given the same priority as a head injury with partial paralysis, and a miscarriage. I would likely have had better and faster treatment for my son if I had taken him to our urgent care clinic. Unfortunately, for myself I had no choice.

It is a relatively new hospital. They were very, very good. He was taken in immediately and seen right away. They explained everything to us on what they were doing and they were very clear, even with the treatment that he got. It was a really good experience for an emergency room visit if there is such a thing. We were seen very quickly and the communication was very good between the doctor and the patient. We had a very good experience from the time we pulled up until the time we left. We would definitely use them again.
