    Comfenergy, LLC
Brenda Garcia was the team leader at my home. She is knowledgeable, polite, efficient, and prompt. She communicated with me every step of the way. She and her crew worked well together and completed the job on time. I would hire this company again and I will request Brenda to oversee it.

    Pestek Pro
Unsuccessful, but OK. This company doesn't do roof work or anything involving ladders for insurance reasons, so the inspection was limited. Visible parts of the house and roof were inspected, no obvious entry points were found. We had a good discussion about what the pests might be (flying squirrels, roof rats), what I should look for, and the best way to seal up access points. Plus a side discussion on mice bait and bait stations. Some areas for me to investigate up close were pointed out. I was not charged, so essentially received a free consultation which provided value to me. I'll just have to get up on the roof myself (again) and take a better look around. I would be willing to hire Pestek for work that doesn't require climbing.

    Property Worx
Brandon and his crew are hard-working and professional. I use them every spring to clean up and mulch my planting beds, trim the hedges, fill in holes and re-seed grass. Due to the nature of the work it's weather-dependent, and I don't really care exactly when it gets done. I contact Brandon early in the season to get on his schedule, and he lets me know a few days before he expects to be on site. When here, he and his guys are all about the work and get a lot done very quickly.

    Limb To Limb Tree Service
Don Jenkins and his team did an excellent job removing dead trees, thinning out smaller trees, and eliminating vines and choking undergrowth from an overgrown 1/2 acre area. He was professional, punctual, and did exactly what he promised to do, He charged a reasonable price for a 2 1/2 day, four-man job that produced six truckloads of wood-chips. The area is dramatically improved and will be easy to maintain. I highly recommend Limb 2 Limb Tree Service for similar projects.

    Cool Techs Heating & Air
Jason and his helper came out quickly, listened to my woes, looked at the situation and provided a reasonable quote. One duct part needed to be custom ordered. When the parts were in they returned and completed the work. Things went more quickly than expected, so they charged less than the original estimate. For both visits they showed up a few minutes ahead of schedule, which was great. The work was neat and tidy, and they cleaned up after themselves. Even though it was a small job they didn't treat me as a "small customer" if you know what I mean. I'm happy they are based very near me, and I will certainly call them again if I need HVAC work.

    See Dirt Run! Inc
The house has been well-maintained, I've re-stained it every few years as necessary since it was built. Finally I got tired of doing it myself and got a few quotes for the work. SDR didn't come out to provide an estimate, they had me send pictures of each side of the house instead, and answer a questionnaire. Innovative, I thought. They warned me they were very busy and it might be 3-4 weeks before they could even find time to provide an estimate, and 3-4 months before they could start the work. I called them a week later as I had the other quotes already, and within a few days they were able to provide their quote. It's obvious they didn't want the job, as their quote was THREE TIMES the price of the outfit I hired, and I didn't hire the lowest bidder. I'm looking for a high-quality job at a fair price. My front porch ceiling just needed a light cleaning and one coat of stain, as it doesn't see any weather, had never had a coating on it, and wasn't greyed. They wanted over $3000 just for the porch ceiling. I could hire a carpenter to replace the ceiling for less than that! The quote was very detailed, to the point that they had a line item for travel time, calculated down to the penny. Because I was switching stain products, they quoted a very aggressive power washing, which does enough damage to the wood that the entire house would need to be sanded before staining. Instead of SDR, I hired a Class A general contractor who has built over 150 log homes. He came out right away to see the house and quote the job in person, and suggested an approach that was not as damaging to the logs. He used a chemical stripper followed by a light power-washing to make the logs look like new, then two coats of stain. On the positive side SDR was very professional to deal with, and answered all of my questions thoroughly over several phone calls. If they can stay as busy as they are at the exorbitant rates they charge then I guess they are successful, but they won't be getting any of my money.

    Great American Log Homes
I've been doing this job myself every 4-5 years, but it's a ton of work. This time I wanted to hire it out and switch products to something more durable than the oil stain I've been using. The house has been well-maintained, but was due. Marshall Painter is old school, and very experienced. He's been a log home builder for many years and knows his stuff. He came out very quickly to look at the job, gave me a quote on the spot and said he could start within a week or so. We talked about products, and he recommended one he'd been using for years with good results. A second company I called didn't bother to come out and look at the house, they simply had me send pictures, then quoted an obscenely high price - 3x what Marshall was asking. They were going to treat the house very aggressively, with a heavy power wash, followed by sanding the entire house. They even had a line item on the quote charging for travel time, and warned that if my well wasn't up to keeping their power washers busy I would have to pay for a water truck at $600 or more per day. To add insult to injury they warned me it could be as much as three weeks before they got time to quote the job, and 3-4 months before they could start work. In contrast, Marshall is a fan of being as gentle as possible when cleaning a log house. He's got products and processes that work for him and takes a cautious approach. I realized that some heavier stripping might be necessary on some of the less-weathered sides of the house, and it was. I introduced Marshall to a stripper that I had used before with great results, and we negotiated an increase in price for the extra effort to strip three sides of the house. I'm a handy guy, and having done it several times I know what it takes to do this job. I'm very picky, and tend to over-think things sometimes. On top of that I'm used to doing things myself, not hiring contractors. This all probably makes me a bit of a challenge for contractors. I ask a lot of questions, I agonize over decisions, and I want to understand the details. I make a decent living, but $8000 is a lot of money to me, and I wanted to spend it wisely. Marshall was patient with all my questions, and made a consistent effort to make sure I understood every step of the process, why they did it the way they did, and the range of possible outcomes. I wouldn't call Marshall old, but he's not a young man. He didn't do any of the work personally, though he has done it all in his younger days. He was on site every day, usually several times, to ensure his subs were paying attention to the details and make sure they had the materials they needed. He's not picking guys up off the corner either - he's worked with the same subs for many years, and they clearly work well together and respect each other. Marshall has high standards and his subs clearly do too - they obviously take pride in their work. They were very careful to mask off the large surfaces and even the little details like the doorbell and the outdoor faucets. The crew who applied the first coat of stain left quite a bit of trash and debris around the site when they left, which was disappointing. But when Marshall showed up the next morning, the first words out of his mouth were an apology. He said he was disappointed because they knew he expected better, and he would have a word with them. And before knocking on the door he'd already made a trip around the house picking up trash. He couldn't have handled it better. I'm very pleased with the end result, and the whole experience I will definitely hire GALH again. I have some interior painting that needs to be done, and they do that too. Not to mention decks and just about anything else you can imagine. Great American Log Homes doesn't have a fancy web site, a secretary, or a marketing department. What they do have is an owner who is detail-oriented, experienced, and truly cares about delivering a quality job and making his customers happy, and surrounds himself with like-minded people to ensure that it happens.

Our commitment to continually using their lawn care services & perimeter pest control services, indicates how satisfied and happy we are with their products, professionalism and customer service. Our usual service tech, Spiro, not only performs his work thoroughly, he also takes the extra step of explaining what is being done. Bio Lawn has turned my lawn into a beautiful lush green lawn and have officially eradicated all insects from entering inside our home! Their pest control program is timed to provide season long protection. Strongly recommend Bio Lawn these guys are great.

    Michael & Son Svc Inc
The purpose of this is to explain how well we enjoy we enjoy using Michael & Sons.  We've used Michael & Sons in our Arlington home for over 10 plus years after having been terribly disappointed with others. When we bought a second home out in Delaplane, we again looked to Michael & Sons after finding that others there that inspected our home prior to purchasing, having given very positive responses about various things in the house, electric/heating/AC/etc...after moving in, found their assessments were inaccurate and some work they did was less than accurate.

We understand Michael & Sons is expensive compared to others but as the saying goes: "you get what you pay for"...and in Michael & Sons case, we've never been disappointed. We have never been pressured to do/purchase something. We've gotten suggestions and based on subsequent research, what they offered as replacements - some strongly suggested to fix a problem and others as suggestions for improvement - have been sound. Those we selected, we've been totally satisfied with.

Having seen some of the other comments about late technicians, offering expensive items, etc...on Yelp and we would offer that we've never had a problem with a late technician, even in the case that the addresses for both are homes are challenging. In both cases, we help guided them in and where a technician found himself falling behind, we've been called and worked things out.

As for their offering items...have never felt pressured and whether we accepted their recommendations at the time - checking their suggestions afterwards or held off to think about them before making a decision, we've never been disappointed. They offer quality products, that upon research, turn out to be the high quality they have stated. Again..."you get what you pay for."

So we highly recommend Michael & Sons and, being fans of Angie's List - the Yelp competition - have found Michael & Sons at the top of their ratings. So we hope this helps putting Michael & Sons in a proper light from what we've experienced over 10 plus years.

    Marshall Roofing Siding and Windows
I spoke with three contractors for this job.  Marshall's bid was originally the most expensive by a little, but they agreed to do the job for the same price as the next-lowest (a few hundred $$ difference).
Marshall is busy, I had to wait a few weeks to get Chris Butler out to visit, but from there things moved fast.  Chris is clearly very experienced, and while on the roof inspecting and measuring he identified several potential issues the other contractors had missed.  He also knew the siding product I had selected very well, and offered an alternative corner treatment that would save us about $550.  I had questions about how the siding would interface with the existing wrapped window trim, and Chris was able to describe how all the pieces would fit together.  By the time he left, I was very confident that his estimate would be complete and correct, with no 'surprises' midway through the job.  He left me a folder with his card (including cell phone #), a brochure on the siding, and current copies of liability and workers compensation insurance - without me even having to ask!
In contrast, one of the other contractors didn't even bother to get up on the roof, he just looked from the ground and took a few pictures.  He was the low bid, but I suspect there would have been extra costs later.
Later the same day I had a proposal in my e-mail, which I accepted and we scheduled the work.  I had to chase the other two contractors to get their proposals, which was a pain.
The work was delayed a few days by late arrival of materials and then a day by rain, but was completed within a week of the original schedule, and communication from Chris was proactive throughout.  The crew began work on a Friday, and finished about 4/5 of the job that day.  To my surprise they returned first thing Saturday morning to finish, which took them 2 or 3 hours.  Cleanup of the site was excellent.  Despite it being very windy on the days they worked, I found less than one handful of debris remaining scattered in the landscaping.
One of the reasons we had the siding replaced was to stop some minor leaks.  Chris spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting, and explained and showed me how some of the roofing was installed improperly when the house was built, which is likely contributing to the leaks.  He sealed up the problems he found, but if that doesn't work I will need a partial roof replacement.  If that happens I will not hesitate to hire Marshall to do the work.  Chris is an absolute professional and our experience with Marshall couldn't have been better.
